Great idea using them as a focal point - they turned out very pretty.

I use this paste recipe:

http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/buildmodel/expert/dony0300aapapier/

I don't like to use newspaper, as it is hard to get to lay smoothly, and is hard for little kids to break. Usually, I use torn rice paper, but I have also used tissue paper (which saves some painting).

Because the rice paper tears if you get it too wet, I smooth a thin layer of paste on the balloon and then place the paper on the paste. It takes some planning, I usually do a couple of layers a day, and in total, about 4-5 layers are needed before it holds its shape. I paint them with acrylics, because they dry fast.

These are some others I made for Halloween one year.

My son's school allows them to have birthday parties, so I filled it with as little candy as possible, and used things like cool pencils, erasers, small cars and planes, puzzles, little games, etc.

It's pretty much become a tradition that I make a pinata for every major holiday, but I like to keep them simple. This has got to be the easiest yet.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and so is my (almost) seven year old son (the only person I was really aiming to please).

Yours turned out really nice on you. I tried the pattern, but ended up with a cowl that drooped down to about my belly button. Need bigger boobs maybe (or another child - as that was the only time I actually had any Grin).

Ok! I finally returned from vacation to find a package waiting from Daisypirate  Cheesy

Here are the great goodies, all together...

The package included:

A handmade notepad, using a paper with a swirl technique that Daisypirate assures me is called "Ebru" in Turkish;
a drawstring bag to hold my stuff;
and magnets to protect against the "evil eye" (do these work against that "look" that 6th and 7th graders give?)

A Turkish coloring book with famous Turlish puppets, a green sparkly pencil, a cute Worldkids pencil, A Turkey map stencil and Turkish traffic signs ruler...

And a game that I can adapt for use in my ESL classroom.

Also included were some jelly stickers against the evil eye (again, hoping they'll be useful in class) Tongue

Thank you Daisypirate! It's all great, and I especially like the notepad and magnets.

Good news ..... Bad news

The good news is: I just heard that a package arrived from DaisyPirate!

The bad news: I  am out of town for two weeks and don't get to see what is in it Angry

So, Daisypirate - if you have pictures, please feel free to post them, and I'm really looking forward to seeing everything in person!

Hi guys!

I received a package from Greenapples with a knitted Caliometry. Will try to get decent photos to post soon (maybe after a haircut?).
