1  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Paper Crane Memorial of Love for Simon on: December 15, 2011 12:55:28 AM
"What's with the cranes?", you may ask.

My best friend and boyfriend of over 6 years, Simon, was rushed to the hospital with chest pains on October 2, 2011. He had had an unexpected cardiac event stemming from a genetic bone disease he shares with his family. The emergency open-heart surgery was successful, but as myself and his family became aware that he may never wake from a coma, we asked friends and family to support us by folding cranes; An old Japanese legend says that if 1,000 cranes are folded, the gods will grant you a wish. You can guess what we were hoping for. We had over 1,000 cranes, but we were not granted our wish. My beloved Simon died on October 14, 2011. He was 34.

Although people continue to fold cranes, the bulk of them were entrusted to me. Fighting my urge (fueled by rage and despair) to burn them to ashes, I worked with my mom to find a safe, respectful, and beautiful way to honor Simon and the support everyone gave us during those terrible weeks. We restrung every crane, after hunting for weeks for the appropriate materials to make what we were envisioning a reality.

Each crane was selected for its specific string - some strings are themed and some are random. Each crane is separated by a bead, and each string has a weight at the bottom. The light in the middle is a strand of LED x-mas lights doubled over itself a few times and wired together. The case is 5 feet tall by about 1.5 feet wide and deep. There are 598 paper cranes in the case, and one ceramic one (a gift to me from Simon's sister).

Several strands of cranes were sent to Simon's parents for a memorial they held, and I took 10 with me to work, each stuck over an LED x-mas light which now hangs in my cubicle. Unless someone comes up with something else to do with the remaining cranes, they will be ceremoniously burned at a beach fire this summer.

Thank you for reading. I hope you think it's as beautiful as I do.

2  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / NEEDED: 6' x 3' clear plastic tube! on: October 21, 2011 11:08:19 AM
Hey folks! I'm looking for a 6 foot tall by 3 foot wide clear acrylic or plastic tube to display 1000 paper cranes. All the plastics people I've talked to tell me it's going to cost THOUSANDS of dollars, but I know better.

Do you have any ideas or advice on how go about making or buying such a tube? ANY suggestions greatly appreciated.

Details of swap:
The holiday season is here, and I can already feel the extra pounds creeping on! Let's all get an early start on our New Years Resolutions, and help each other fight off those evil holiday pounds! In this swap, we will craft things to help motivate our partner to lose weight and/or get fit. Some possible crafts are motivational art or jewelry, crafted gym bags or yoga mat slings, inspirational quotes, healthy recipe cookbooks, or a calendar to help track achievements! So many other possibilities! This is going to be so much fun!

As for the specifics:  this is a  five-point swap .  Swap packages can include any number or size of items as long as they add up to at least 5 points:
3 pts = large
2 pts = medium
1 pt = small

Here are the Craftster guidelines for item sizes:
LARGE:  3 or more hours, $30 or more (a shawl, a shirt, a skirt, a set of jewelry with four to five items, a purse)
MEDIUM  = 2 to 3 hours, $10-$30 (a scarf, a simple bag)
SMALL  = less than 2 hours, less than $10 (earrings, a wallet)

These size guidelines are very subjective, so, as always, work with your partner to decide how much to send.  Be sure to agree on the amount of time, money, and effort you want to spend for this swap.    If you or your partner want to make something that requires more time or effort than we usually think of for a large item this point system gives you a little room.  But PLEASE be sure to consult with your partner!

For this swap, you will need to post in the thread once a week. Not only does this help the organizer keep track of what's going on, but it helps build a network to support everyone on their weight loss mission. Failure to post in the thread at least once a week (without prior notification of absence) will be noted in communication feedback.

As per the Craftster Swap Rules, participants who have not sent by 2 weeks after the deadline will be given negative feedback. This will be reversed when you send.

6  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Another weightloss/get fit swap? on: November 22, 2009 06:52:32 PM
The holiday season is here, and I can already feel the pounds creeping on. Would anyone else be interested in participating in another one of these? It will be perfectly timed to combat holiday poundages and to get a good start on New Years Resolutions.

Here is the original swap link, and the gallery too!

This swap is now OPEN!
7  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / A costume built from Craftster Swap! Sookie Stackhouse from True Blood! on: November 01, 2009 03:15:07 PM
So, I was in the true blood swap, and cursive_queen was my partner. She sent me a Merlotte's shirt and an embroidered Merlotte's bar rag, and I decided to use these items to make my halloween costume! I'm pretty much submitting this to give her the credit for it, because I really think it looked great! So that you again cursive_queen! Happy Halloween!

8  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Super simple first quilt attempt on: September 19, 2009 11:12:50 AM
I made this quilt/blanket for a swap, and feel sort of bad posting it here with all you amazing quilters! Maybe one day I can make a quilt as nice as the ones posted here, but one step at a time.

Anyway, with this quilt I wanted to have something that invoked a "nature" feeling, was sophisticated, but still fun and funky, and I think I did a good job! I also wanted it to have a little bit of texture to it, so I tied it down with matching buttons and put a few matching iron-on patches around the edge. I hope you enjoy!

This is the whole quilt... I had a hard time getting good photos of it.

A patch in the corner

With the whole swap package with matching pillows and coasters

So, what do you think?
9  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Cork Board Jewelry Organizer on: July 27, 2009 12:29:43 PM
Sooo, I was hit by a stroke of genius in my sleep the other night for a way to arrange and organize my jewelry. The next day (yesterday) I went to the store and bought just a plain old cork board for hanging memos and the like, and a pack of thumb tacks. A little bit of paint later, and this is what I had! I'm pretty much in love with it.

The whole thing:

A close up of the filigree in the corner (I'm on a total filigree kick right now):

Here it is hanging on my wall in the bathroom!

I hope you all like it! Comments much appreciated Cheesy
10  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / A-not-so "Plain White" hoodie! Muchos Fotos! on: July 10, 2009 10:16:13 PM
Hello! I wanted to show you all a hoodie I made for a swap for photochickkds in the 100 things swap! She loves the band "Plain White T's" and liked the batman hoodie I made last year, so I combined the two!

I printed the design of her favorite album onto inkjet printable fabric, and attached it to the hoodie with embroidery. Then I sewed up the whole thing! It's t shirt material on the outside and on the sleeves, and lined and accented with red (her fav color) flannel! I know it's summer right now, but hopefully she will be able to use it in the winter! yay!

This is the image on the back of the hoodie, all accented with embroidery and stuff!

I put little red X's around the outside, backstitched on the big lettering, and did various other stitches on the jeans and shoes.

Here is the back. There are red cuffs on the sleeves and the hood is also red (as you can see!)

Front! Red Pockets!

And here is a pic of my recipient wearing it! So CUTE!

I hope you enjoyed looking! Comments appreciated greatly!
