5  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / 500 fall birthdays...need ideas! on: October 02, 2008 01:53:37 PM
my mom's side of the family recently started having one big birthday party per season for everyone's birthday in that season (because it's too hard for everyone to make it to one place [we all live like 2 hours away from each other] so frequently).  the fall birthday party is coming up (october 19th), and on the list this time we've got:

- my brother: plays WoW all the time. seriously, i don't have any clue what to do for him
- my mom: loves bicycling, but already has like every bike accoutrement known to man
- my step-dad: ...your guess is as good as mine, basically
- my grandmother: teaches sunday school at her church and is really into it. really religious. (i already got her this memo-pad type thing with her initials on it)
- my grandfather: since he retired he doesn't do a whole lot except cut the grass and watch fox news. he loves university of alabama things, and camping.
- my dad (birthday is november 17th too, but he's on the other side of the family so his can wait a little longer): loves motorcycles and cars. right now what money isn't being spent on my college expenses he's spending on re-building a 1974 corvette.

so, basically all of these people are ridiculously hard to buy for. and everyone knows i'm broke this year because it's the first time i've lived on my own without roommates. so, everyone's probably getting something cheap or made. i can embroider, crochet, knit minimally, stencil, and kind of draw. if you have any ideas and it's something i can't draw, i can outsource it because my boyfriend is really good at that stuff. i also have access to screenprinting materials. any ideas? anyone? please? halp?

not that the cozy isn't handsome, i'm just a fan of calculators (i'm also taking calculus this semester).
7  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Re: awesome new paper lamps for college design classroom on: August 24, 2008 05:07:33 PM
Alabamanda yeah it's simply a lightbulb on a cord, apparently you can buy them at Ikea but the nearest Ikea to me is an hour away so i did a search around my area, nowhere seemed to have them but i did find the parts to make it, you can buy a light socket and a cord and just attach them together pretty easily and that's what i ended up doing and it's working out quite nicely.

creatively chelsea marie i was also thinking about using these at a wedding (mine won't be for some time still but the brainstorming is tons of fun) i thought that made with a smaller template and used as a part of a centerpiece with those little LED candles inside would be really sharp. also i thought that instead of cutting out hundreds of pieces you may be able to get a print shop to dye cut them for you, i'm not sure of the exact price but i know that as far as dyes go this one would be relatively inexpensive (no tight corners, simple shape) that would save you HOURS of work and i think is definitely worth looking into!

hey, thanks for answering. where did you find all the parts to make it? i think i'm going to start actually making the paper parts this week, but can you maybe explain how you made the cord-light part?

i want these all over my apartment, but i don't really get what it's hanging from.  is that just like...a light bulb on a cord? where did you get it? i'm so confused.
