2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / Halloween Monster Party on: October 27, 2011 11:12:35 AM

My two kids ages 7 and 4 asked for a Halloween party this year, being a mom who loves parties and Halloween how could I resist.  We decided on a Monster theme and over a month a crafted all of the party favors and decorations.  I also made all of the desserts.

These are some of the 40 handmade stuffed monsters that I made as party favors.  Each kiddo got to take one home.

3  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / Halloween Window Clings on: October 25, 2011 09:49:59 AM

My husband has been wanting to make his own window clings based on Ed Emberley art forever.  This year he actually went out and bought the blackout film and set to work.  About a week later our bay window was covered in these awesome images just in time for Halloween.

I wrote up a little tutorial here: http://diylouisville.blogspot.com/2011/10/halloween-window-clings-tutorial.html

5  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / Bubble Gum Themed 7th Birthday on: June 27, 2011 07:52:28 AM
This year my daughter decided she wanted a bubble gum themed birthday party.  So after a few months of crafting and gum hoarding this is what I came up with!

This is the entire dessert table

Dessert table different angle

Cake made by me, buttercream with fondant and gumball decorations.  The topper was a wooden 7 that I spray painted and glued gumballs too.

gumball cookies, I dipped oreos in bright colored candy melts and then added a white chocolate highlight

some of the cupcakes, the topper for the stand was found at Joanns.

The other gumball machine cupcakes

some of the gum

a close up of the background I made.  It's just foamboard covered in wrapping paper.  the 7 is made of cardboard covered in crepe paper fringe

Dining table centerpiece,  I made the gumball machine out of a flower pot, ivy bowl and saucer.  The welcome sign was made in photoshop.  The balloons are punchballs we gave out to the kids.

The favors were baby food jars that we spray painted the lids red, filled with gumballs and topped with a label made in photoshop.

6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / Guy Party on: March 29, 2011 06:30:31 AM

So a while back my friend and I started thinking, guys rarely get parties.  Girl's, we have them all the time, showers, tea parties, cocktails, just because.  So we decided to throw a just because party for the boys. We sat up a really cute buffet with snack food, salty sweet cupcakes, popcorn, pretzel sliders, salsa's, mustard dips and beer.  We used lots of wood and burlap to make it more manly Smiley  You can get all of the recipes and tutorials on our blog: http://diylouisville.blogspot.com/2011/03/diy-louisville-party-for-boys.html

7  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Bunny Lunch on: March 29, 2011 06:23:09 AM

My kids are super excited about the movie Hop that comes out this week and since I promised to take them on Friday, I thought why not celebrate the entire week with bunny themed surprises.  Yesterday's was a bunny lunch.  I cut a peanut butter sandwich on pumpernickel bread into a bunny shape using a cookie cutter, added a marshmallow cut in half for the tail, a white circle sprinkle for the eye, a heart shaped sprinkle for the nose and chocolate jimmies for the whiskers.  The face details and tail were held on with peanut butter.  I used some curly lettuce for a little bed and then baby carrots for the bunny's snack.  My kids thought this was great and it would be perfect for Easter too.  You can see more on my blog: http://diylouisville.blogspot.com/2011/03/hop-long-day-one.html
8  COOKING / Dessert / Girl Scout Cookie Inspired Cupcakes on: March 07, 2011 05:24:02 AM
To celebrate the arrival of Girl Scout Cookie Time, we decided to recreate two of our favorite cookies in cupcake form.

The Tag a Long cupcake has a shortbread crust, peanut butter cake and rich chocolate icing.

The Thin Mint Cupcake has a Mocha Brownie Cake, chocolate topping and mint buttercream.

We topped them both off with their namesake cookie and sprinkles to match the box.
Step by step tutorials can be found on our blog along with the recipes.

9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Valentine's Day / D.I.Y. Dessert Table on a Budget on: February 11, 2011 03:50:26 AM

On Wednesday my friend Julee and I threw a little surprise Valentine's party for the kids after school.  We put together a red and white themed party for under 30 dollars.  The best part is the almost everything was store bought, even the cake and cupcakes were from a mix.  So this party was cheap and quick to throw together.  We wrote up a detailed post about everything at our blog: http://diylouisville.blogspot.com/2011/02/diy-dessert-table-on-budget.html

Here are some of the features of the party

Red soda, that we decorated with scrapbook paper

cupcakes with suckers for toppers

strawberries filled with cheesecake filling

red velvet cake decorated with store bought candy on skewers

Thanks for looking-Kim
10  COOKING / Dessert / Valentine's Day Rice Crispy Candy on: February 07, 2011 04:56:07 AM

The other day I had a party to go to and very little time to make something to take, but I wanted to make something cute.  I threw together a batch of rice crispy treats and then shaped and molded them into traditional V-day candy shapes, like what you get in a box of chocolates.  I dipped them in chocolate and decorated.  No one knew that they weren't 'real' chocolates until they took a bite and the kids thought they were way better than 'real' chocolates.  Next I want to make some to put in a heart shaped box.  Best part is these only took less than an hour to make.  I wrote up a full tutorial if you would like to see how they were made. http://diylouisville.blogspot.com/2011/02/valentines-rice-crispy-candy.html
