1 SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Gathering Foot Question on: August 20, 2008 06:49:51 AM
So I was browsing and clicking this morning when I came across this PDF tiered skirt tutorial and it says to use something called a gathering foot to do the uppity billion gathers in the skirt.

Now I *love* gathers but *hate* gathering. And I don't have a Baby Lock machine. I have a Singer (well, my Mom does, really) that's got "6235" in red on the manual cover and is at least 15 years old. Now Amazon sells a Singer gathering foot for the "6500, 2623, 7300, 3800, 6038, 1100, 2638" models - so I'm doubting if it'd be worth getting this $20 foot. But newer machines look like they CAN handle these and I will be looking for a sewing machine in the future when I move out and need my own machine.

So can any of you lovely ladies here tell me of your experience working with a gathering foot? Is it worth it, or should I just bite the bullet and do gathering the old fashioned way? (i.e. - sew two thread rows, scream at the fabric as the gathers get too floofy in one part and too flat in another, then groan at it as they get all even but the length is wrong) And if you have liked your experience working with one, could you recommend what machine/foot you really like?

Thanks!
