Calling all January Babies (and anyone else that wants to randomly give us presents!)

I know this is a little lengthy, but please read this post all the way through so we can have an AWESOME swap!

I reserve the right to deny participation to anyone who has a history of late sending or poor communication. This is a BIRTHDAY swap. Flaking on someone's birthday is just WRONG!  Cry

( Please bear with me ... it might take me a full day to get back to you with approval because of my work schedule!)

Questions? Please post in the discussion/gallery:

Details of swap:  This swap was organized so everyone can get something crafty for their birthday!  Please read the guidelines carefully.

**You have ONE WEEK after being approved for this swap in which to make your first claim!**

1.  This swap is list style, like the Ongoing Wishlist Swap.  However, it is NOT chain style. You can choose any birthday Craftster’s list that is posted, rather than only being able to pick from the last one posted like in the OWS.

2.  This is a medium item swap. A medium item is defined as a craft or recon, etc that takes you two hours to complete OR $20 worth of store bought items. (If bought from a thrift store, estimate what it would have cost new.) However, you may also substitute a few small items for a medium.

3.  If your birthday is in swap's current month, you can post your birthday wish list for this month. To do that, you must first PM me with the swap questionnaire filled out and wait for approval. While you're waiting, be sure to post in the discussion/gallery thread:  https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=430501.0#axzz2pDatb1M2

4.  Once you have been approved, you may post your list of things that you would like to receive. This is the format for your lists: First post your location and a short bio of yourself, then a list of crafted items you would like, then craft supplies (if any) and lastly you can put a few “extras” that aren’t crafted, things like candy or tea. Remember, the more items on your list, the more likely you are to be chosen. The minimum of items to post is five.  Also including your wists, etsy favorites, etc. is a good way for people to get the idea of your likes and style.  If you have any allergies please type them in red in your bio section. Please see "Tips to Creating a Good List" below.

5.  Please post lists only in this thread. Discussion can be done here in the combined discussion/gallery thread:

Please be sure to post here so that you can be part of the discussion ... You will not be approved until you have posted in the discussion thread!

 6.  Every birthday participant must make at least one claim.  You may make up to two claims at a time (unless you are a FOC or first time swapper).  Once your items are RECEIVED (not just mailed out), you can make another claim.
 - *New swappers may have only one outstanding claim at a time.  They may claim again after their first claim is RECEIVED.
 - *FOC's may have three outstanding claims at a time.

7.  Claims must be from the "crafted items" or "craft supplies" sections of a person's list.  Let's keep is crafty!  Extras are just that ... extras!  If you are sending mostly craft supplies, at least craft a little something like a handmade birthday card!

8. You may get claimed more than once, but your minimum amount to claim is one.  It is possible you may not get claimed at all. In this case you will not be provided a swap angel; angels are only if you get flaked on. However I do my best to make sure everyone gets claimed by keeping track of how many times each person is claimed. If possible try to pick someone who has been claimed 0 times versus someone who has been claimed 3 times.

9. If it's not your birthday but you would like to send a birthday present out you may do so.  Fill out the “non-birthday swapper” questionnaire and send it to me for approval.  Birthday swappers who receive a present from a non-birthday swapper MUST SEND A SNAIL MAIL THANK YOU CARD!  Let's be nice! You will not receive feedback until I hear from the other swapper that they have received a thank you card.  I'm serious ... it's the least you can do!

10. When you choose to fulfill a birthday wish, PM both the organizer AND the chosen Craftster.  At that time, please request the address from the receiver for where to send it.  After that, you have 2 weeks to get the item out the door.

11. It is super important for everyone to keep good communication.  It is REQUIRED that you PM me when you've sent and of course, don't forget the DC#.  It is REQUIRED that when you receive, you PM me and publicly announce in the gallery (even if you don't have pictures).  If you do not send the appropriate PMs, you will receive “poor communication feedback.

12.  When one of your items is chosen, please cross it out so that it is easier for others to see what has been chosen. (It wouldn't hurt to thank the person at this time either.)

13.  If you are sending late you must PM - phnxreign99 - by your send-out date.  If your send-out date comes and goes and you don’t PM me, you will receive “poor communication” feedback.  It should not be my job to hunt you down and find out what is going on.

14.  If you are flaked on in this swap you will receive an angel, but only in the amount of packages to which you also sent out. For instance, if you send out 2 packages, and are claimed for 3 packages but are flaked on once, you will not receive an angel because you already received 2 packages, which is equal to what you sent. If you send 1 package and are claimed for 1 package and you are flaked on, you will receive 1 angel.

Please make sure to put "Jan Birthday Swap” or something equivalent in the subject line on all communications. The most important thing to me is COMMUNICATION. Please PM me (phnxreign99) when you send and receive, and please reply to my PM's to you in a timely manner.

Please format your PMs like this (it helps me stay organized!):
Proper labeling of PMs:
"Jan Bday Swap - Sign-up"
"Jan BDay Swap - Claim"
"Jan BDay Swap - Sent"
"Jan BDay Swap - Question"

When sending "sent" and "received" PMs include the send-by date, listed in the second post of the main thread, your user name, their user name and the item. Just copy and past the info from the second post if you want!  Example:

Send by Jan. 14
kaz814 to TroubleT -- pretty purse

Outstanding claims allowed:
FOCs: 3 at a time
First time swappers: 1 at a time
Everyone else: 2 at a time

Become an FOC~

It seems that every month there is someone whose list languishes for a while. I want everyone to get picked so here are some tips for a well-round list:

--Make sure your items are actually mediums and smalls. Quilts are not mediums. Large painted portraits are not mediums. Hand knit sweaters are not mediums. This isn’t to say that you can’t have any large items on your list (some generous soul may have the time and the inclination to choose one of those!), but the majority of the list should be smaller items.

--Listing “A surprise” plus a well filled out Craftster profile and a link to your Wists, Pinterest, or Etsy Favorites (with a decent amount of items on it) is always helpful in getting chosen.

--Make sure to post a variety of crafting techniques. If you list appliquéd t-shirts in five various themes and count that as your required five items, that is more like one item for someone to choose, not five. Having various crafting methods (sewn, knit, crocheted, paper crafted, jewelry, etc.) is going to make it easier for people to choose you.

--Check out other lists in past Bday swaps and the Ongoing Wishlist Swap for ideas for things you never knew you wanted!

Fill in this questionaire to SIGN UP before posting a birthday wish list and send to phnxreign99:

Name of swap: January 2014 Birthday Swap
Craftster username:
Email address:
Real name & Address (formatted for mailing):
When is your birthday?
Have you read and understand all of the rules to this swap?
Are you willing to send at least a medium item per claim?
(If not then you will not be approved.)
Are you at least 16 years old?
If shipping within the US, do you agree to obtain a DC#?
If shipping from outside of US, do you agree to provide a copy/scan/picture of your mailing receipt?
Have you posted in the discussion thread already? If you say yes and haven't I will not approve you. If you say no I will not approve you. Discussion thread found here: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=430501.0#axzz2pDF0LVAi  (Yes/No)
Quiz: What do you have to do if someone who is a non-bday swapper sends you a gift?
Quiz 2: How long do you have to send out after making your claim?

(Then two weeks to send after claiming!)

If it's NOT your birthday and you want to SEND TO A BIRTHDAY CRAFTSTER, fill out this questionaire:

Name of swap- January 2014 Birthday Swap (Non-Bday Craftster)
Craftster username:
Email address:
Real name:
Mailing address, including country and properly formatted for shipping:

If shipping within the US, do you agree to send a DC#?
If shipping from outside of US, do you agree to provide a copy/scan/picture of your mailing receipt?
I understand that I will be getting a thank you card and not a package for this swap.  (Yes/No)

Also remember to read the Swap Info Guide to find out how to ship your item and other details about participating in a swap.
Please make sure to post in the combined Gallery/Discussion Thread to keep up with updates:

4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / January Birthday Swap on: December 28, 2013 04:55:50 AM
Seems our Craftster birthday swaps have fallen out of fashion ... but I've been doing the January one for so long, I hate to not see one this year!  I'm willing to organize, if someone is willing to join  Grin  Any January babies out there ready to swap?!

5  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Eden's First Halloween - Ladybug Fairy on: November 01, 2009 11:18:01 AM
I have always had the pleasure of making my daughter's Halloween costumes, but had to give it up when she was in high school - she's 23 now, so it's been years since my services were needed  Sad .  (I have three sons, but their costumes have never been much fun for me!)  Finally, my 6 month old granddaughter was in need of a costume this year  Grin  I tease that I'm going to make her a fairy EVERY year, so this year I started with a Ladybug Fairy.

All the instructions were readily available online for the wings (I watched the Threadbanger video posted on Craftster one day).  Hint - after looking all over town for red tights to use, I finally found them at the costume store - but smart people probably already know that!  I used black sparkly felt for the dots.  Had to create the whole headband with wire and felt since I couldn't find one for her size head ... worked out better when I had to put the antennae on anyway.  Of course, the skirt is tulle, with more internet instructions ... super easy!  And I had to throw in the wand because what fairy doesn't have a wand?!  Although ... she wasn't allowed to play with it since everything currently ends up in her mouth  Cheesy .  All thrown together in a weekend, with a black onesie bought online ...

Here are some elements of the costume ...

And here's Eden in full fairy mode ...

And just 'cuz I think she's so cute, here's another ...  Wink

Can't wait 'til next year ... I'm thinking of all kinds of wonderful fairy possibilities -  Grin
6  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Jewelry Randomness ... Presents for family! on: June 24, 2009 04:52:17 PM
I am about to go on vacation back "home" to Pennsylvania and wanted to make gifts for everyone, but I am seriously running out of time.  I came up with this idea and they work on so many levels ...

I made these charms for all the ladies in my life - aunts and cousins and nieces (kind of a small family!)  Each one has gemstone chips that are chosen just for them, like the charm with the owl is for my cousin, who is a teacher - the stones are for communication, to control chaos and to have patience - all things I think a teacher could use!  One family member needs to find a job, one needs to find their "girl power", one has it all going on but needs some obstacles removed (etc, etc).  They were so quick and easy and personal ... and they can hang them anywhere and remember that I truly think about them each and everyday - a personal blessing from Tammy.

One of my BFF's is into chakras so I made her this bracelet and charm ....

I think it would have looked so much better with some beads other than the frosted ones, but I am currently banned (self imposed!) from the bead section of the Hobby Lobby until I use up some stash ... Wink

And I made these super easy earring for Mom (she will think they are a masterpiece!) with the findings that are already shaped like stars ...

I hope I have remembered something for everyone in the family!  I'm glad I had this little crafting binge - I will be two weeks without my supplies - I hope the withdrawals aren't too painful!!
7  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / Eden's Dresses (alternate title - "I love being a Gramma!") on: June 24, 2009 04:18:22 PM
So my daughter calls and asks me if I could make something for my 2 month old granddaughter Eden to wear on her very first 4th of July ...  Silly question for a crazy crafty "Noni"!  Of course I can and I'm just waiting for opportunities to make her things.  I pulled out all the stops this time ...

Learned to make a onesie dress from Bellaluna's post here on Craftster -

Learned to make korker ribbon here -

And picked up the pattern for the little shoes here -

The first one was totally inspired by one my daughter saw on Etsy, just changed up a bit.  I hate sewing little things and those shoes were a b*tch for me, but they actually came out ok - no head band with this one because my daughter did buy one on Etsy ...

Then, being the craft addict that I am I just couldn't stop with one dress - what kind of grandmother would I be?!  Since her Daddy is a Marine, I thought she should show her Semper Fi pride in this ...

Close up of her little Marine head band ...

Onesies don't come in beige, so I had to dye one with tea.  It came out a pretty nice shade.  And no shoes with this one, since I fried too many brain cells with the others -  Tongue  I hear that her Daddy is very excited about her wearing this ... what sweet little girl wouldn't want a dress with tanks and planes on it?!  The "Semper Fidelis" is freezer paper stenciling.

He he ... all that work and she will probably wear it ONCE since she is growing so fast!  (I don't have pics of her in them yet since she is in CA and I am in AZ - but I will see her soon!)

Whatcha think - comments and critiques always welcome!
8  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Summer Solstice Bling on: June 20, 2009 01:58:40 PM
Made this little set (bracelet and earrings) for the WWP 12 swap (for Midsummer) ... all sunshiny and happy!  I'm still working on my technique, but this is the third bracelet I've made like this and I see where it is definitely getting easier ... I have to work on my "randomness" though, since I tend to be a very symmetrical person -  Wink (would something be "random" if I had to make a conscious effort to make it random?!)

I loved it so much I did make a set for myself (so very rare!)

9  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Virgin De Guadalupe Bag on: June 20, 2009 01:51:15 PM
I made this for the WWP 12 swap recently ... I adore this fabric! (If you shop at Joann's I'm sure you've seen it -  Cheesy ) And I definitely have to make one for myself ...

It's just a basic tote pattern, so nothing fancy.  But I love that I found the perfect fringe for it and the contrasting fabric make it look so colorful.  I even went all out and put in zipper pouch and a pocket (which, if it were for me I would have skipped all that -  Tongue)

I hope it will be a nice conversation piece for my partner in the grocery aisle  Wink ...
10  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / World's Fair "Lederhosen" on: May 15, 2009 02:38:28 PM
A few years back, at the last minute (as children always do!) my first son said he needed a costume for his World's Fair, his country being Germany.  I managed to make these with a pair of men's dress pants from the Goodwill, some trim leftover from a flamenco dancer costume and some fabric paint ... the shirt is from the thrift store also.  Now the costume has been worn by all three of my boys (yes, I talked them into choosing Germany each time  Wink ) - here's a pic of the last one, Logan  (seriously, he does comb his hair - he even has a comb in the front shirt pocket!)

Do you know what it was like trying to convince three 6th grade boys that they HAD to wear this?!

And here's an action shot at the 6th grade World's Fair - 'cuz we're so cute -  Wink

Since Logan is the last of my kids, I gave the outfit to the teacher to be forced on the "too cool" 6th grade boys for years to come -  Grin
