1  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Employer Identification Number Question on: July 02, 2009 04:58:56 PM
I have finally gotten off the pot and went down to the tax collectors office to pick up my business tax receipt application. Upon reviewing it I see that I need to get an EIN first. I started the application but when I got to the question about describing my business I got confused.

I make various craft items to sell (handbags, home decor, and apparel). Does that make me a retailer or a manufacturer?

I can only choose one option.

Fellow craftsers, how did you know what to put on your application?
2  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / Grocery Store Tote Question on: June 17, 2009 12:09:29 PM
I am looking to make some tote bags for shopping (grocery store, craft store, etc.).

What would be the best fabric to use?

Home Decor Cotton?
Cotton Duck Cloth?

3  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Home based business problem on: June 10, 2009 03:15:41 PM
What do you do when the area that you live in does not allow ANY home based businesses?

I want to make crafts (handbags, t-shirts, home decor, etc...) out of my home to sell on-line and at craft fairs. There will be no extra traffic to my home, no noise, no tell tale signs that there is a business going on in my home.

Short of moving, I don't know what do do.

Any suggestions?

P.S. I live in Pasco County, Fl but not in one of the cities that have business licenses for home businesses.
4  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Tile Coasters on: May 29, 2009 03:47:49 PM
I have recently become obsessed with making coasters out of ceramic tile and scrapbook paper.

I seal them with Minwax Polycrylic and they work great with cold drinks, but when I put a hot mug on them they started to melt.

My question is what can I seal them with that is heat resistant?
5  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / My first Duffel Bag on: March 14, 2009 08:10:38 PM
This is my first duffel bag.

I made my own pattern and put it together after much trial and error.

It is stuffed with newspaper, I didn't want to make it stiff for storage purposes.

The lining and piping are turquoise and I used pink vinyl for the strap, handles, and bottom.

What do you think?

6  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Fabric Search on: March 13, 2009 07:35:11 PM
Does anyone know where I can buy 100% Sheer Jersey cotton?

Is 100% Sheer Jersey cotton different from cotton jersey?
7  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / Iron On vs Sew On on: February 22, 2009 04:12:21 PM
What type of interfacing do you prefer to use on your bags?

I like the ease of iron on but I find that it will rumple the fabric if you have to turn the bag inside-out more than once.

What do you think?
8  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Photoshop vs Illustrator on: February 20, 2009 07:55:17 PM
Which one of these programs do you use the most in your businesses?

I want to take classes to learn how to use these programs but can only afford to take one class at a time and I can't decide which class to take first.

Any suggestions?

9  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / How much is to much on: February 02, 2009 03:23:17 PM
How many businesses are to many?

I am interested in

1. Handbags
2. Home Decor - Pillows, Placemats, Coasters, Table Runners
3. Silkscreen - T-shirts, Pillows, Handbags

I also want to learn how to knit. That would add scarves, hats, and gloves to the mix.

I don't have a life (by choice) so I have a lot of free time, but am I being to ambitious?

Is it better to specialize, or can I be a Jane of all trades?
