1  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Pottery, Ceramics, etc: Completed Projects / Dancing Baby Groot! on: August 26, 2014 07:16:56 PM
Hi All!!

After watching the awesome tutorial made by NerdEcrafter
I was inspired to try my own hand at making a dancing Groot

Due to accessibility issues, AKA my parents not wanting the house roaring hot from the oven and stinking, I made my Groot out of air dry clay.  This presented some major issues for me (drying out too quick and cracking,) but I was able to overcome them.

I first started off with a wire frame and lumped a large amount of clay around it o make the base of the figure. BTW the base I'm using is a Styrofoam piece cut to fit into a 4" pot which I inverted.  I later used it in the actual pot.

I then started making long snakes and attached them to the base to make a vine/bark effect.  This is where I had some issues with the clay drying out too fast. I also molded the hands.  They turned out a bit to large for my liking but I'm okay with it.

I then molded the head and plunked it on the base.  The branches coming from the head were going to be impossible to make out of the clay so I put wires in the head for a solution later on.

After the figure had dried I had some of the long snakes break and around the neck had cracked as well.

No problem! I used some light molding paste as a repair/ crack filler.  I ended up covering the entire piece in this.  It gave a slight rough texture which added to the bark effect.

After allowing that to dry I then painted the entire piece in a basecoat of brown acrylic paint.  Then I went to town with a small brush and various shades of brown and some green to drybrush some details into the piece.  I also glued some moss to the head to act at the branches. Sorry! Forgot to take pics of this part.

Pop him into a white painted pot and he's done!!!

Closeup of the face.  I used some clear nailpolish on the eyes to make them glossy.  I like the contrast of the glossy eyes to the matte paint on the body.

Closeup of the main body.  You can see the drybrushing I did.  I'm not the greatest at this but I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Please let me know what you think!

4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Minecraft Swap anyone??? on: December 25, 2013 06:54:05 PM
Just testing the waters here to see if anyone would be interested in a Minecraft swap.  I've heard so much about the game and am just getting into it now (finally have a computer powerful enough to play it.) I've seen quite a few crafty things out there and I'm sure this could get some creative juices flowing

Haven't decided on size yet (probably a 4-6 point swap)

any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all

Had my fellow crafster and in life best friend Grindhousehussy19 contact me today.  She tried to login to her Craftster and it says she's been banned.  She has no idea what she's done wrong or whatever the reason may be that she is banned.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank You

6  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / I miss hockey swap??? on: October 22, 2012 04:43:48 PM
Not sure if I'm the only hockey fan here but I thought I'd toss this idea out there.

With the hopes of a ful NHL season dwindling, hockey fans need something to keep them busy.

I for one am enjoying watching the AHL team, the Hamilton Bulldogs (affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens) but I do miss the NHL!!!! I've never been to an NHL game!!!

Let me know if you would be interested in this swap

I'm thinking of keeping it simple. A 3 item swap. A small, a medium, and a large. These items can be based on the persons favorite team, player, or just hockey in general.

Again let me know if your interested!!

8  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Montreal Canadiens Jersey inspired bag on: April 27, 2012 08:36:06 PM
Hi All!!

So i love the Montreal Canadiens and even tho they didn't make the playoffs, I was still rooting for their AHL affliliate team, the Hamilton Bulldogs (My hometown)  So for the end of the Bulldogs season, I decided to make a jersey inspired bag.  The stripes placement and size are pretty much the same as the Canadiens away jersey.  I hand embroidered the white on the logo (the blue and red are felt)

Got lots of compliments on the bag at the last couple of home games for the Bulldogs.  I also decided to submit a picture of the bag and a little blurb to the Montreal Canadiens Social Media Fan of the Day contest.  Lo and behold, last Saturday (April 21,) I was named the Fan of the Day and my little blurb and picture of the bag are on the Canadiens website!!  Super excited!!  Have a look!!

A couple of my friends want me to makes them bags too now for next season.
9  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Round 2? on: October 29, 2011 01:20:26 PM

10  CLOTHING / Costumes: Completed Projects / Nyan Cat Costume on: August 21, 2011 09:14:03 PM

Hey all!

This isn't for Halloween, but for a sci-fi, anime, comic, gaming, horror convention being held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada this weekend. This will only be worn in the costume contest on Saturday night.

I haven't competed in a costume contest in 5 years so this will be my Grand Nyan Return

I realized with just over a week before the convention begins that I had most of the fabric and items needed to make an AWSOME Nyan Cat costume!  So after a quick trip to the fabric store for the needed fabric and items, I started.

I started working on this costume on Thurs Aug 18th, and except for the paws, I'm basically done.

The entire costume plus the rainbow is about 4 feet long and just over 2 feet tall

The poptart body base is a lage piece of cardboard that I covered with a textured pleather (painted to the proper colour.)

The poptart icing is pink fun fun that I glued onto the pleather. The sprinkles are dark pink velour.

The head and tail are a foamcore base covered with grey fun fun.  The eyes, nose and mouth are fleece that I sewed onto the face. The cheeks are more of the pink fun fur.

The rainbow is cotton boradcloth that I sewed fat strips together.  The top has a small pocket for a straightened coat hanger so I can have the rainbow hang off the back of the poptart body.

The paws will be like a lareg sock as they will be going over my hands and feet.

I have a harness on the back of this costume.  It will be attached to the side of my body and with my fur covered hands and feet, I will crawl (with my butt in the air ^_^) across the stage to the Nyan Cat Music.

I hope there will be video of my performance on YouTube shorty after the con.  I'll post it here if it's available

!!!Update!!!  I've decided to opt out on making the hand and feet covers from fun.  The fur is really slippery and I can just envision myself slipping and falling on my face.  I'm now going to be wearing grey socks on my hands and feet.
