very cute skirt!

If you want to make it a lolita outfit, I recommend looking up country lolita or classic lolita. Since it is so floral it would work best for that genre of loli.

Wow! I can honestly say this is wonderful! I'm usually very harsh when it comes to Lolita, but this dress just captures the Sweet Lolita style perfectly!

I want one!

4  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: Sushi Tips, anyone? on: August 27, 2008 10:32:36 AM
To cook white japanese rice or sushi gomi (sushi rice) use equal parts water and rice. For brown rice add a little more water because you want the bran to soften, I'd say about a half cup extra for a 3 cup (of dry rice) batch.

I don't really recommend botan rice. Its pretty much the cheapest brand of rice and doesn't  have good flavor. Try a sushi rice in the medium price range.

Stressedoutmamax is right about the sushi zu. we make it by hand at my house, but you have to work quickly with it.

There are actually videos on sushi making too.

you'll need a bamboo rolling mat, they can be bought at asian food markets. It will make it easier for you to roll the maki this way.
5  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: For Bento-enthusiasts and newbies! (kind of long + now with pics!) on: August 27, 2008 10:24:00 AM
Those bento look fantastic, Kimberly_Star!

I think refridgerating rice for a short period of time, say a few hours, is fine. A fridge has a very dry environment which sucks out the moisture of the rice and gives it bad texture. This is why I don't refridgerate rice.

6  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Re: What to do with 3 Hello Kitty heads? on: August 14, 2008 04:40:55 AM
the girl on the bag is a Korean character called Pucca. The heads came from McDonalds toys. I know cause I have a ton of them too...

I suppose, if you're a sewer, you could sew bodies for the heads...maybe.

Preparing the rice during the morning, how do you guys do that? Huh
When we make sushi or anything, preparing the rice takes quite some time because the rice needs to settle a while after boiling and suck up some more of the water..

I use a rice cooker, which makes things easier because I can prep the rest of the meal while the rice cooks.

investing in a rice cooker is good if you eat a lot of rice. We have several at my house and I have an individual rice cooker I take to school with me.

I bought mine at Mitsuwa, the Japanese food store by me, but I've heard they sell them at Target too.

My mom loves her Zojirushi Zutto because it sings a little song when it starts and when the rice is done. It also cooks the rice BEAUTIFULLY. so good. Also there is a pre-set function on it so I can wash and prep the rice with water and set it to cook for the next day.

I have heard of people freezing rice, but I haven't done it myself. I enjoy the smell of high quality Japanese rice freshly cooked.

It sucks that the price of rice has gone up significantly. We bought some rice a few weeks back for $20.99 and the next week it was $29.99!

Thats a really cute pinafore and it looks great on her!

I used to have eczema like that when I was little. Then my mom took me to a chinese medicine doctor and she pretty much cured it. Now I only get small patches. Definitely look into chinese medicine for her.
9  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Summer Reading Swap Gallery on: August 01, 2008 02:07:11 PM
So I got my package from riario when I came back from my crazy, last-minute roadtrip with my sister. It was pretty awesome! I can't wait to dig into these books!

Here are two pouches she made for me:

A close up of the Wizard of Oz fabric!:

Inside one of the pouches was a ton of candy!:

Inside the other pouch were two very sweet bracelets!:

She sent me four books over all the first two:

Freddy and Fredericka by Mark Helprin
Songs In Ordinary Time by Mary McGarry Morris

The other two books:

The Museum Guard by Howard Norman
A Spy In The House Of Love by Anais Nin

Overall I think this went pretty well for my first swap!

Thanks so much for everything riario! I hope you like your package!

this is off-topic, but i had a wonderful experience at the post office today. there was someone in the lobby who personally assisted me! at the post office! and then the person behind the counter weighed my package and told me that a non-flat-rate box would be less expensive than the flat-rate box. and this was in a busy, downtown san francisco location! i have never had such helpful service at the post office - it's usually a terrible experience where i can never get assistance. i just had to share. thanks for humoring me.

that said, i third (fourth?) the anxiety of waiting for my partner to receive. especially since this is my first swap! eeeeeee!

I had the exact same experience! I was so surprised! What nice folk....

I'm going to go take pictures of the stuff I received now so I can post up here... Cheesy
