1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: Discussion Thread for Nerd Battles on: June 08, 2018 03:17:32 PM
I read through the Textbook level ones - saw some things that I've used myself, and some that I saved to try later! Smeddley, I love that you included pictures in your list, so I'll do that as well.

Textbook Level 1: Tutorials I've used

1. Outlined braid friendship bracelet - this website is my go-to for knot bracelets, they have so many great patterns! You can search through them by number of strands, keywords, and more. There are also usually community photos so you can see what the finished product will look like or get color inspiration.

2. Scrap fabric twine - very easy to make, and a neat looking result!

3. Wonky starburst mug rug - great for using up pretty coordinating scraps from a quilt.

4. Snow (or ice) dying - fun to do and beautiful results!

5. Battlement couching - a cool looking fill stitch! I also learned the lattices from this website. The step-by-step pictures are very detailed.

Oh I forgot about Sawbones! I've listened to that one too. The episode on burns sticks out in my mind as especially cringe worthy in terms of past treatments. If you enjoy that style I think you'd like the Dollop. Smiley

I loved looking through everyone's Multimedia Level 1s; special shoutouts to RhWT for It's Tricky, sbc for Gives You Hell, cADDc for Ellis Paul, MaC for Gaelic Storm and Christine Lavin, Smedd for Xena, and gozer for Bob's Burgers!

If it's OK, I'm going to do a podcast list because that's what I put on when I do my crafting. I like to sink into a narrative or conversation without having to watch something. If it's too rule-bendy, I'll make a music list instead!

Multimedia Level 1: Podcast Playlist

1. Buffering the Vampire Slayer - Kristin Russo and Jenny Owen Youngs are awesome queer ladies who discuss every episode of Buffy, and at the end of each podcast they play an original song about the episode! The songs are excellent, and they are both very fun, positive people who have so much love for the show.

2. My Favorite Murder - Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff are true crime enthusiasts who just love to talk about murder. They are very funny and empathetic, and bring just enough irreverence to each case that the subject matter isn't overwhelming.

3. The Dollop - Dave Anthony researches a real event, person, or story from American history and relates it to Gareth Reynolds, who has no idea what it's going to be about. They are both hilarious comedians who constantly riff on everything, and the stories range from silly to serious. It makes me learn things while laughing.

4. The Mental Illness Happy Hour - Host Paul Gilmartin interviews people about their journeys with mental health, trauma, and addiction with genuine compassion and humor. He also reads from anonymous surveys filled out on the website relating to peoples struggles and triumphs. I've listened for years, and it's bolstering to know that I'm not alone in some of my thoughts and feelings, and that we can heal from so much. Warning that this one can get dark and explicit at times.

5. Awesome Etiquette - Lizzie Post and Dan Post-Senning from the Emily Post Institute answer listener questions and discuss many topics of etiquette. Their focus on consideration, respect, and honesty guides them through many tough social situations.

6. Unspoiled! Harry Potter - Natasha Winters is a huge HP fan, and somehow RoShawn DiLodovico had made it though life completely unspoiled. As they read through the books, it's so fun to hear RoShawn experience HP for the first time, try to predict what will happen, and be completely surprised by certain plot twists.

7. Unspoiled! The Dresden Files - The same setup as the previous show, about my other favorite book series about a wizard named Harry. This one is currently airing, whereas HP has finished the 7 book readthrough. Natasha and RoShawn's dynamic is endlessly amusing.

8. The Moth Radio Hour - Various people tell true stories from their lives, ranging from funny to heart wrenching.

9. In the Dark - Reporter Madeleine Baran investigates a single case over many episodes. The first season focused on the abduction of Jacob Wetterling. I think this kind of deep dive into a specific case is fascinating.

10. Critical Role - A group of 8 self-described "Nerdy-Ass Voice Actors" play Dungeons & Dragons. The worldbuilding is incredibly rich, and it is so fun watching them build this narrative together. I love all the characters so much.

Brief Description: A celebratory flower garland for May Day (or Lei Day in Hawaii)! Our bathroom has a citrus color scheme, and I wanted a way to get some actual fruit imagery in there. I bought two garlands, pulled of some flowers, and hot glued mini fake lemons in their place.
