I received a SCOBY from a friend! I'm excited to try making kombucha, but I'm also worried that I'll kill it. :/ And so impatient to know if it's working! I have to wait at least another week.

12  Vinyl Record Animals in Completed Projects by Acadian Driftwood on: January 06, 2018 01:47:33 PM
After accepting my dad's old record collection and sorting it into keep/sell/donate, I still had a bunch that were either damaged or just... things no one would want.  Tongue

So I gave one right back to him in the form of this 3D hawk!

The pattern I drew up slots 3 pieces together, but they were a little loose so I ended up hot gluing them in place. I touched up the glue with black paint so it wouldn't be noticeable.

It's now hung above some plants in my dad's office, and looks pretty nice there.

I also made some more simple ornaments to give to family and friends for Christmas - 3 bears, 2 cats, and 1 leopard gecko!

For all of these, I used a woodburning tool with a razor blade attachment to cut through the vinyl, and then a thin tip to burn a small hole for hanging. I smoothed out the edges a bit with 120 grit sandpaper.

New experiment! I made cheese! This is the paneer from the book One Hour Cheese by Claudia Lucero, minus the curry flavor since I wanted plain (but I did add some fresh black pepper). The book has amazing photos of each step in the process, and makes it really easy to follow and troubleshoot.

It was pretty good! The lime juice ended up being a bit strong flavor-wise, but I bet it would have been perfect if I was making the curried version. I cubed and fried it lightly, then I used it to make palak paneer, which I had only ever bought pre-made or from a restaurant.

Here's the recipe I used, altered slightly to suit what I had available. Pretty tasty, I'd call it a success!

craftADD homemade ravioli sounds amazing! Please share when you try it.

I've made this before, but it was in the spirit of this cookalong so I'll share it with y'all - homemade chai concentrate!

Unfortunately, the blog I got my recipe from is now private - but let me know if anyone wants it and I can write out the recipe with my own tweaks.

19  Level Up Your Cooking Skills! in Craftalongs by Acadian Driftwood on: December 01, 2017 08:15:42 PM

Experiment with new techniques and hone your kitchen skills! Want to try making fresh cheese, canning jams, blending custom spice mixes, baking bread, butchering meat, or even just using an unfamiliar ingredient?

This craftalong is a place to share your successes and failures learning experiences, ask advice, post resources, and chat about the new things we're all trying. The focus isn't as much on specific recipes, but on the skills that can be used in many different ways.

I recently started looking at things in my pantry and fridge and thinking "could I make that?" Things like canned beans - no reason I can't try dry beans, they are cheaper and I would have more control over the taste. I started making my own yogurt, and it's really cool! I want to try so many other things, like cheese, bread, and different kinds of fermentation. Please join me and post your own learning adventures!
