1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Recon help! Bright hippie fabric stuck in a ruffly awkward mess on: August 01, 2010 10:18:59 PM
So I picked up this dress http://www.target.com/Liberty-London-Target-Ruffle-Halter/dp/B002X7QPA2 at Target a while ago for $5. I adore the retro bright fabric but hate the style of the dress. I am petite 5'1 and fairly chesty so the ruffle and thin halter style is pretty awful on me. I intended to reconstruct the dress into something I could wear often because the fabric is soo me! I was thinking of hacking off the top and just making it a skirt, but it leaves me with a bit of fabric from the top and I am worried it will lay strangely...any suggestions on how to make this into my dream recon? I wear skirts often and have a hippie retro vibe.
2  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Halloween Town Swap...altoid tin shrine/chunky house style? on: September 15, 2009 11:50:32 AM
I love Halloween. It is a time of year where even the self-proclaimed “craft challenged” join our crafty world to join in the festivities of the harvest and the night of spooks and becoming someone else. If I could, I would happily live in Tim Burton’s Halloween town or in a spooky Edward Gorey illustration or something of the like. Seeing as I can’t, I thought it would be a great idea for a swap!

The esteemed Rackycoo and Phizzychick blew me away with their Halloween towns that they posted in August and July.

I remember thinking that this would be a lovely premise for a swap. Fun to make and swap and they can be used as decorations for Halloween. Each person would make a ‘building’ (house, cemetery, candy shop, chemist, etc) to swap with each person in their group; perhaps groups of 5? (I was thinking it could run like the Chunky House swaps). We could do either chunky houses or I was thinking altoid tin shrines, so that we would have an exterior and interior… Everyone could give a certain feel for their Halloween town; i.e. kitschy, spooky, vintage, Tim Burton inspired,  black and white, etc…

Any interest? We would have to get started soon, as Halloween is approaching fast.
3  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Fond but not in love- An homage to the greatness that is Radiohead! on: June 10, 2009 04:51:24 PM
So in the grand move from the college dorms to our apartment, my boyfriend's favorite Radiohead posters got mauled. They were wrinkled and torn and had giant sticky spots all over them because someone thought the best way to hang a poster was with duct tape. *sighs, shakes head*

Needless to say the boy was very sad and asked me to fix them and said if I couldn't, he would just throw them away. So of course, I "fixed" them. I took three Radiohead posters, printed Radiohead lyrics, a black pen, chocolate scented stamp pad, construction paper, brass letters, a glue stick, recycled cardboard and an old poster frame whose plastic fell out and broke long ago  and came up with this:

From these posters:

The boy is happy, and I think I am too! It is the perfect balance of crafty and Radiohead love!
4  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Preserving wine labels? on: April 11, 2009 06:27:50 PM
I have some imported wine bottles with really pretty labels that I wanted to use in my altered art projects. Any ideas on how to get them off without destroying the label?
5  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Altered Ancestors on: April 03, 2009 12:22:40 PM
Any chance people are ready for another altered ancestors swap? I am totally bummed that I missed the first few rounds, but was curious to see if anyone was up for another. Or are people all ancestored out?
6  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 37 ENTRIES / Cute as a Button Laptop Cover on: April 02, 2009 07:21:09 PM
So my pretty red leather laptop cover has seen better days. My darling kitten has destroyed it because it apparently feels really good under his claws. I love my mac, but I hate that it is white, it just gets so dirty, so not having a cover wasn't an option. So I did what any crafter would do, instead of pitching it and buying a new one, I made it fabulous, one of a kind and very me! I inherited quite a bit of vintage buttons from my grandmother and then also received a large amount in a supply swap so there was a real mixture of what buttons I used. I wanted to use red to accent the original color of the cover, but I felt it needed a pop, so I added some aqua and white. I was worried about it looking overly patriotic, but I think I created the retro look I was going for. Hope you like it!

The finished product:

and of course, the nasty befores. All of the white marks you see are where the leather has been scratched off by kitty

7  COOKING / Dessert / Another rainbow cake on: March 23, 2009 05:38:22 PM
So I have seen quite a few rainbow cakes, so I decided to try it myself. It was almost a success. I am an idiot and didn't read the box, so I poured all of the batter into one 9 inch round pan. The middle wouldn't cook, but I didn't want to overcook the whole cake, so I scooped it out and made a bundt cake shape. It was super good, and my bf (the birthday boy) really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I could only get to the cake after it had been mauled (oh, boys!)

9  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Tin Sign~Foreign on: January 31, 2009 07:51:23 PM
I found a tin sign at my favorite thrift store for 75 cents. It is a No Parking sign in Greek or Russian...I think it is russian... It is about 9 x 12. Any ideas on what to make out of it?
10  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Houndstooth Hoodie on: January 23, 2009 10:25:05 PM
I made this for the bf about a year and a half ago, but am just getting around to posting it now. I hadn't sewed for a very long time and this was me getting back into the groove. We went to the garment district in LA and he picked out both his fabrics. I was a little worried that they were going to crash horribly, but he can totally rock it. After I made this we started seeing houndstooth on all kinds of guy clothes. Funny how that works. I used a burda pattern that was heavily modified to have it more fitted.
