I think it'll work with the right outfit. The pattern's busy and the sleeves are wide so you might want to go with simple and basic underneath. The boots sound good, I guess it'd depend on what shade the dress is. I don't think it's hideous, that's definitely an exaggeration.
    You may want to make it more fitted as someone else mentioned above - it might minimize the business of the pattern. But ultimately, if you like it and want to wear it, wear it. Maybe it's because I go to a liberal arts university riddled with hipster bohemians but I feel like I've seen that look a lot. I think it has potential, even if it's re-done in a different fabric.

This slipped my mind until now, but one of the best couple/group costumes ever are the Yip-Yip aliens from Sesame Street. They're always a big hit:
