1  Vintage Halter Dress...Collar Pattern..? in Clothing: Discussion and Questions by MissMigraine on: October 16, 2012 06:44:38 PM
Hello Craftsters, I was wondering if any of you could help me find a very detailed tutorial and or pattern for a dress collar/lapel.
A friends mother is making her own dress for Grease-o-rama next year and already has a gorgeous vintage pattern for the dress she wants, however, she is wanting to add a collar like these:

I've done a little looking around with pretty much no results! So any and all help would be awesome!

Thank you Ladies and Gents ;3

4  My first pleated skirt!!! With Tute [: IMG HEAVY! in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by MissMigraine on: January 15, 2009 07:23:33 PM
Okay, So I got bored Saturday night and decided, "Hey! I'm bored and have a spare yard of cotton, Lets make a skirt~"
Little Did I know exactly what I got myself into...heh.
First off, I've never done pleats before in my life, this was my first, and hopefully not last attempt at them.

Step 1;

Okay, first of all, you need to measure your waist, to figure out  how much fabric you'll need.
My waist/hips are about 32/44 So I ended up using just a little less than one yard of fabric. :]

Step 2;
Lay your fabric out, and decide how big you want your waist band to be. I like mine nice and wide, so I made it 5 inches wide.
Cut this part off of the fold of the fabric, like so;

Step 3;
Now, take your two pieces of fabric ( Not the waistband, silly!) and sew them short ends together, to create one large rectangle. :]
Also, Don't forget to hem it NOW! I did, and was too scared to do it after I had pleated. Dx

Like this;

Step 4;
This is the tricky part, and took me several hours to get right, though I'm sure many of you are better at this than me, or actually have the tools and dont' have to wing it. xD
Its time to pleat. If you're using the same amount of fabric as I did, then you might want to use the same method I did. :]
I made mine a reverse box pleat.
Each pleat was 4 inches across, with a 1 1/4 inch insert (Where the fabric folds, you measure the folded fabric! c: )

I don't have any pictures of this. Sorry! ;3; If any one wants me too, I can draw a picture for you guys. Just ask! :]

Step 5;
Now that you have all your lovely pleats pinned in place, Iron them to a nice crisp, and make a holding stitch across the top, (This doesn't have to be pretty or perfect! It'll get covered up by the waist band, anyways. :] )

Like this;

Step 6;
If you want, you can do a top stitch to set your pleats in place, like I did! For mine, I just did a basic wide set zig-zag about half of the way down on the top of the pleat line.
Alright, now that the crazy hectic part is over, pin on your waist band and sew it on.

Like this;

Step 7;
Now that its all one big awkward piece, time to make it more awkward! (For me atleast, haha xD)
Pin it on yourself and get it to fit right in the waist first, making sure to taper the waist band in on the sides so it fits all of your lovely curves~
Once its pinned to fit, put in a zipper of your choice ( I don't have any pics of this! Once again, just ask and I'll draw one n.n), then sew it all together!!

I hope you all can follow this!
I tried to make it as easy as possible.
Advice, Criticism, Comments?

I got my first sewing machine about a month ago, as a birthday present from my older sister.
(Hellga !)

I don't know what year it is, but I think its from the 50's~

So far its been great!
I've done a few minor repairs for my dad, and taken up the straps on my homecoming dress, But no big projects yet.

I hope to get some done soon though :]
