212  Re: Tutorial: Paisley Necktie Schoolbag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by tendstowardschaos on: June 23, 2008 07:31:29 PM
To Rickrackruby - thank you so much for this tutorial! I really loved the bag when I saw it and am so happy to now have my own!

I went with a patriotic red, white and blue theme...the ties are striped, paisley, geometric, etc. (I knew I'd barely get it done in time for the Fourth of July  Grin )
Here is the front:

Here is the button (my first attempt at fusing shrinkydinks...it says '1776' at the bottom):

The back of the bag:

The lining - I did it a little different because I wanted another pocket. I took the length from a tie I used on the main panels and gave the lining a facing and did a full lining. The fabric I used on the pocket is from a bandana I found at HobbyLobby.

Here is the extra pocket I added. When it's zipped up, you can't tell it's there and the tag covers the zipper pull (see my name there on the tag? right between 'justice' and 'freedom'  Grin ).

And here's the gratuitous "stuffed full" shot. I'm finished with school, so this bag probably won't be carrying 20lbs of texts, just some summer reading materials and sewing projects....but, it's BIG! Yay!

Thanks again, R3! Great tute!

Craftewoman- (I'm a chemist by education, so your 'lab rat' just sounds cute as anything IMO)...I can't wait to see pics of it once it's done! I wanted to suggest that you make it some lab goggles - they're a mainstay in the lab...but, I think poppet eyes would be adorable magnified behind some geeky gogs.  Wink  A microscope sounds a little complicated, but you could make a 'bunsen-burner' pretty simply...make a wire ring stand and set your beakers above it.

I just finished a poppet for my little niece! It took me about three days, and I actually put clay in her nose - something I didn't do with Kella. Since my niece is Chinese, I gave her poppet a Chinese name, Mei. (She's 2.5 years old, so I don't think she'll mind my naming her.) All she needs now is some clothes of her own - Kella's dresses are a little too big - and she can go "home" to her girl. Yay poppets!

Wildfyre - your poppet is so cute, you'd never know that you had difficulty with her!

I spent most of today finishing my first poppet. I think I gave her too much hair - I had to trim it so it didn't pull her head back, but, I wanted it long...haha. Then, she was complaining about borrowing clothes from other dolls...so, she got a dress of her own, too. Now she's happy and she told me her name - it's Kella...  But, now she says she needs a party outfit and her own guitar.  Wink
Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and praise...Kella's ego is getting a good boost!

So, I just finished my very first poppet! Well, she doesn't have hair yet, but I couldn't wait to share.
