11  Re: Shop the Swap 31 **the Gallery** in The Swap Gallery by SewMamaLady on: October 27, 2009 01:08:47 AM

I just received my really cute bag (that I decided to keep for myself) from corduroy cat! It fits all of my school stuff in it and is bigger than the bag I've been carrying. It's much sturdier too. It's a VERY nice bag. I'm quite excited and it even matches the stuff I got in the Autumn Scarf Swap. Smiley Thanks corduroy cat!

Here is my gorgeous package from GamerGirl. She packaged it all up cute in Halloween tissue paper and bags but I was so excited I didn't get pictures before I opened them. I did however save them to use this next week. Smiley

I got a scarf, hat and gloves from her. I LOVE these. They will match almost everything I wear and even match a bag I just claimed in STS!

So here are the pictures to show her skillz.

Group shot...

Fingerless mittens which will be perfect for school this winter! They fit perfectly, just the right size!!

The hat, which is quite stretchy, everyone tried it on.

I have a big head so it's great! lol

The scarf, which is wide, chunky and thick! Perfect for me, I get super cold so I'm always wrapped up in scarves. This one will really keep me warm!!

& Just for fun, a shot of it all with my new school bag that matches perfectly...(bag was from another swap)

Thanks GamerGirl, it's all beautiful and I love it. Smiley

13  Re: Shop the Swap 31**Discussion Thread** in New Swap Theme Ideas by SewMamaLady on: October 19, 2009 08:16:14 PM
I hope Twiz is well. I don't know what kind of surgery she is having. Huh Do you guys know? Anyway, here's well wishes to Twiz 'cause she's so sweet!!
I just retouched the paint up on an Irmi lamp I bought my daughter today. I am SO excited about it. These are the things that make me love having a girl. lol
The idea is to take the plain white lamp shade and do a faux quilted cover for it. Like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/3532988410/
I decided it needed a metallic green base, like the sun is shining down on them. They look a little disgruntled, so it cheers them up a bit. Wink
I'm redoing her room in a "Alice in Wonderland/Enchanted Forest" theme. So learning to felt, spin yarn, dye things and pain better have really come in handy. So has art class. I've really learned to "see" design in such a different way or at all really. It makes me hate my entire apartment, which is COMPLETELY undecorated. But it gives me such a greater respect for the aesthetics of, literally, everything. It almost feels like some kind of spiritual awakening.  Cheesy Jeez, Louise, I think I'm loopy too. Can anyone tell? I've had A LOT of Bigelow Cinnamon Stick tea and chocolate today. We're all battling colds and those two things oddly enough seem to have kept me going all day. We are potty training. Yikes. Luckily, we're learning to just sit still so it's going okay. But it takes away my craft time *wah!*
I'm interested in a silhouette painting that is themed to the room decorations for AJ though. (Who does those, sheepblue right?) Like I said, I don't have points. Always willing to personal swap. But I'll be adding these things to my wish list and avoiding purchases for myself. And no, I don't think it's bad to purchase things for yourself rangerbeth. I'm seriously considering keeping the tote bag I claimed from corduroy cat for myself instead of giving it away.  Cool

Oh and here are the acorns I collected today. They are small but cute. (You should have seen how many nutty looks I got, like no one has ever gathered acorn caps.) I'm keeping a handfull to fill a little mason jar for AJ's new room. I thought a small mason jar with acorn caps, one with a moss terrarium and one with "fairy dust" would be precious, lined up next to some toadstools (felted!) If anyone wants a larger image, PM me, I'll upload another copy to my Photobucket account. Included a penny in the shot for size comparison.

PS. The cicada shell in the bowl not included...I just thought it was cool.

14  Fiber Friday - Oct 16, 2009 in Spinning: Completed Projects by SewMamaLady on: October 16, 2009 02:17:19 AM
This is the first time I've started Fiber Friday! I'm running an unofficial Facebook group for Craftster fiber artists and I wanted to send a message out with a link to Fiber Friday!

So I have bobbin pictures instead of finished objects. But I just got a "new" (to me anyway) Ashford Traveller and I'm SO excited so I want to share again, seeing as I've already showed off in other threads. Wink

Several different yarn singles here:
Green = Nesse's hand dyed romney from STS
Pink/purple = the noodle princess's batts from a handspun & fiber swap
orange/red/white = The Fiber Lady bamboo and a fantastic batt from penguino that I hand pulled into roving. Came out GORGEOUS. I added firestar and love it.

Basket of hand pulled roving, same as the roving I did with penguino's orange batt in the last picture:

And because why the heck not, look at this AWESOME swap package from CamOovas. I'll be felting away when my next test is out of the way!

16  Re: Low Stress Fiber Swap Round 1 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by SewMamaLady on: October 07, 2009 12:12:54 AM
I received an awesome package from CamOovas today! In it are some amazingly soft fibers!

First a shot of everything.

You can see there is a batt mixed of various wools and nylon. This batt is so soft and light. The colors are very rich. It's the softest batt I've received so far!

The bright purple beneath the batt is just my table cloth. The colors are much darker than that.

Then we have a variety of sample fibers! Including: nylon (oh so soft! This stuff is GREAT!), camel (also wonderfully soft), llama, angora, some SSS grey rovings (mohair?) and another black fiber that is coarse. I'm not totally sure what that one is. CamOovas? These fibers are all so soft. The black fiber is coarse but that will be very useful in other projects.

A needle felting kit, because I've never tried it until tonight! I had fun! I even have little projects to show. There is a bag of fibers for felting with the kit. They are quite soft.

My first felting projects, two needle felted little faux stones. This was a blast! I love stabbing the fiber. Smiley

And last but not least, an adorable felted turtle. I told her I've never gotten anything felted and love sea creatures. She delivered. Smiley

Thanks CamOovas, this was a great swap. I love my package and I've been playing with it all night!

17  Halloween Pajama Pants!! in Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects by SewMamaLady on: October 06, 2009 02:20:04 PM
I made these Halloween Pajama Pants last night on a whim in about 40 minutes! I just made them using the simple method. These aren't the best instructions ever, but they're all over the internet. This is just my interpretation of what I did.

1. Got a pair of my daughter's 18 month old pajama pants.
2. Folded pants and fabric in half and placed them on fold of fabric, minding the fabrics pattern.
3. Cut about an inch around the pants on the fold. (I left about 3 inches on the top of the pants to fold elastic into. Depending on how stretchy your fabric is, you could have a small top hem.)
4. Pinned pants together right sides in.
5. Sewed up top sides.
6. Pinned the pants of legs. (This creates the arch you sew along next. Top seams will now be in the middle of the pants. Leg seams will run along the insides of legs.)
7. Sewed along the legs of the pants. Sew top hems down in the same direction.
8. Fold top of pants twice for a nice, comfy fit. Using about a 1" seam (or whatever you prefer) sew around top of pants, leaving a 1" space for adding elastic. Measure your elastic to baby or to original pair of pants, then insert elastic by attaching a safety pin to one end. Run elastic through pants, then sew ends together.
9. Now you can finish the top of the pants and close that 1" space.
10. Fold leg cuffs up to desired length. (I folded mine twice to get rid of that raw edge. Some fabrics might be cute with a raw edge and not even need folding!)
11. Sew cuffs in place.
12. Find an adorable baby to stick your Hallloween pants on and take some pictures. Mine was asleep at the time. Wink

Using this method and some altering, I made a pair of pants to fit a 6 month old that fits into 12 month clothing and a 23 month old that wears 18 month - 24 month clothing.

This is the roving I was talking about in the above post.

The end (obviously  Cheesy) is the yarn spun from these fun little buns of fiber!

I love these batts penguino sent. They're so light and airy, yet they still feel dense. With the bamboo and firestar it reminds me of candy corn and hot tamales candy.

Nesse - The fiber on the left is some of the Romney from STS you dyed. The purple is a batt that the noodle princess sent me in our last fiber swap. They were both a blast to spin up too!

19  Re: Who's Got An Ashford?? in Spinning: Completed Projects by SewMamaLady on: October 04, 2009 03:03:56 PM
I do!! I got mine this week from a very sweet local spinner who had gotten a Schacht and didn't really need her Traveller anymore. It was a SWEET deal. Very, very reasonable price. Too reasonable really but I'm not complaining!

The double treadle kit still needs to be oiled. (It came with the single treadle and a never opened double treadle kit. I was having a hard time with single treadling so I just couldn't be patient and put it on.) I'm not totally sure what I want to do. Has anyone ever refinished a Traveller? I don't want to mess it up but I think some light sanding and an oil that highlights the natural colors of the wood would be gorgeous!
She also used vaseline and graphite lubricant to oil it. So it's got a lot of black staining on it. Any advice with that? It works MUCH better with regular oil. What kind of oil should I get for it?

Here's a picture of a batt I spun up from a swap from the noodle princess when I got the hang of it. Smiley
