1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / Tea Party for my Mom's 50th on: May 01, 2009 03:51:48 PM
My Mom will be turning 50.  She has never had a birthday party.. well, not as long as I have been alive and I want to do something special for her.  I was thinking of a Tea Party.. but with coffee..lol.  My Mom loves her coffee.

I would want to invite only the women from the family.. I planned an Anniversary Party for them and having invited the whole family, it became super stressful.. and super expensive.  I will of course make a kids table because I feel bad saying "leave your kids at home"  Husbands don't mind staying home and a frilly Tea Party invite will get them off the hook of going to another party Smiley

I know I want every place setting to have the antique-y cups and saucers.  Maybe floral handkerchieves for the placemats.  I will serve coffee and tea..... and that is as far as I have gotten.

I was thinking about having games and maybe a craft.. a tea inspired charm bracelet.  Does this sound too childish?  I know I would love it.... but I am a kid at heart.

Has anyone planned anything like this?  Any tips for decor or recipes for small foods?
2  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Beads: Discussion and Questions / Favorite Gemstone? on: April 30, 2009 05:41:29 AM
What is your favorite gemstone to work with?

My favorite is Unakite.  Each is like a little Monet and by far gets the most compliments.

3  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Pep Talk or Reality Check- Please :) on: April 24, 2009 10:08:57 AM
My cousin opened a beauty salon in the beginning of April and suggested I make jewelry to sell there.  Well, I have a good deal made already and just gave her a call to stop by the salon... to show her the pieces and drop them off for sale.

I have used all silver/gold plated metals, shell pendants, semi precious gemstones and pendants, and nicer glass beads. Each set is a necklace and matching bracelet.  I kept track of all costs and used the the 3X the cost method plus $10 for my time and $5 for her having them at her store.  So the first sets I was going to have at her store would be priced $30 each (I did round up or down.. more often down....on a few prices to make the money exchange easier for her)  I have also purchased a display, silk bags, and custom tags for each set.

Today she told me $5 is not enough, she will need at least $10 because she is going to be talking to the customers about them and doing the actual transaction.  Okay, I will use the extra 1X I figured into my price for overhead (displays, bags, tags, etc) for her and eat the loss.

She then said that $30 is too much for handmade jewelry.. she is saying this based on the jewelry that was selling at her other salon.

So I feel stuck!  If I swing the $10 for her and lower my price... I will be earning peanuts for all my work.  I feel like throwing in the towel, but I have alot invested in this already.  Do I eat the cost and try to recover what I paid for them.... or stick to my guns and leave it at my $30 price.. with her taking $10?  Am I overpricing my work.. am I being unrealistic?  How much should I be giving her for her part?

Huh.. I don't know if I need a pep talk or a reality check.
4  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / FMG Premades on: April 24, 2009 05:58:50 AM
FMG has some interesting premade jewelry sets but I am a bit scared off because some are listed as May Contain Lead.  I definitely don't want that.. I did not even think that was legal!   I had just placed an order and have yet to receive it... their finding would have to state any lead content too right?
5  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Not sure where this goes.... jewelry bag opinions please! on: April 04, 2009 05:13:20 AM
I need opinions on jewelry bags. I am not sure which to buy! I want my wares to look as appealing and professional. The jewelry will be placed in these after purchase.

The choices are:

Organza bags- going with brown and baby blue

Silk bags- brown and baby blue

Velvet- ivory, white, or black
6  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Stretch Bracelets on: April 03, 2009 05:48:08 AM
I make jewelry but have never gotten into stretch bracelets.  I was wondering if there is a particular brand of elastic/ stretch cord that is best?  There are so many to choose from.

Also.. how do you elimate the huge knot?  I have tried making a bracelet with some elastic from my sewing bin and I had to tie the knot multiple times.. in attempt to make it last.  Now that I am typing this... I wonder if I can slip a bead over it.. or even a crimping bead?
7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Candle Gifts on: November 18, 2008 06:26:51 PM
Can you think of ways to jazz up store bought candles?  I have 3 ideas already:

Cinnamon Sticks wrapped around a small pillar candle

Removing the wrapper from a jar candle and hand painting or etching the jar (not quite sure if the etching stuff is okay with heat??)  I think a snowman face will look so nice against a white candle.

Gluing votives or votive holders onto precut wooden snowflake ornaments.. decorate ornament with glitter or paint.

Any ideas to decorate candles... of any kind.. tapers, pillars, etc?
8  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Jar Mixes on: August 07, 2008 06:21:29 PM
I am saving up Classico spaghetti jars and am hoping to give Jar Mixes as Christmas presents.  Does anyone have any mix recipes that 1) finished product actually tastes good and 2) does require me to list many ingredient add ins on the tags.

2) because I was gifted a jar last year that required so many add in ingredients along with the ingredients in the jar, that it ended up costing alot to finally make the meal.

Anything from soup or drink to dessert is greatly appreciated.  Also any comments on the finished product will be helpful..Thanks in advance!
9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Diva Shower Gift on: May 19, 2008 09:06:01 AM
Here's my situation... I met with the ladies of my family yesterday and my aunt is throwing a baby shower for her DIL in July.  I have a very limited budget for this, so I want to start planning now so that I can craft some items while Walmart Fabric Dept has everything on clearance.

One of my aunts is making a diaper cake, another is quilting a blanket so those ideas are out the window.  My cousin's wife is very high maintenance and I know she will want very nice things for the baby.  She is naming her Ava and is doing up her room in pink and brown.

So far I have come up with the ideas of:

Painted wooden letters with hanging ribbons (so glad I came across that post this morning)

Fancy burp cloths

Can you think of anything else I can craft with a few yards or less of fabric?  I so hope she likes what I make... if all else fails, I can always say that they came from a boutique..lol.
10  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Chili Recipe? on: April 30, 2008 05:40:17 PM
I am not vegetarian but do make vegetarian meals for my family several times a week.  Mainly because I can't stand touching meat and I am trying to work within a biweekly budget.

I have two kids..7 and 10... oh and my hubby... biggest kid of them all.

I am looking for a good chili (meatless) recipe that will go perfect along side a baked potato or fresh baked bread.  I have tried so many recipes but they are either too sugary or too blah to actually add to my permenant menu.

Any recipes would be greatly appreciated... oh, and if it could be made in a crockpot.. it would be ideal.

Thanks In Advance!
