1  shawl for mermaid costume in Costumes: Completed Projects by themagnificentjess on: October 24, 2008 05:54:47 PM
So my friend has a mermaid costume for a boat festival and asked me to make her a shawl to keep her warm this weekend. I bought some blue tie-dyed fleece and some green fleece, some glitter garlands to look like seaweed, strung shells, and a decorative net.

I cut the green fleece to look like strips of seaweed and used that to edge the blue fleece that i had sewn into a mini-cape, then i attached the netting to the cape, and interwove the garlands, shells and some extra green fleece.

tada! (took about 3hrs total)

Cheesy ok so we finally went haha.. last day..

here's the final shots on our pretty dresses, and the doublet i made that saturday for the boyfriend, it's leather and tapestry, not very intricate, but he liked it. the other girl with us is wearing a dress i made almost 7 years ago Smiley

i had some issues, as you can see, with my bodice bending and with my undershirt popping too far out the top..  i might have to reinforce it before i wear it again Sad

the green dress turned out wonderful, everyone was complimenting her and nobody believed she was only fourteen, she even got offered drinks by a couple of drunk pirates.

the only bad part of the day was that one of those drunk pirates nearly knocked her over and stepped on her dress (we didn't have trains?!?!) and ripped out some of the cartridge pleating in the back..

and then some little 12yr old girl was squealing and pushing through the food lines and stomped TWICE on my hoop and skirt and ripped open about 3 inches of my pleating as well. i was tempted to chase her down and make her pay me for damages but she ran off really fast when she saw what she'd done..

luckily i had pins to hold my sleeves back and some very nice tipsy girls stopped to help me pin our skirts up well enough they held the rest of the day.. (huzzah repairs!)

ok here's what i did yesterday, since the renfest closes tomorrow, i finished the updates for my kid sister's dress

i made her a chain girdle/ belt to attach her satchel (we made that too, just charmeuse drawstring) and i re-did her sleeves as plain green sillk with the ribbon down the middle, edges in cream cording and then little antique gold buttons. we will have the white chemise pop through the openings. I did the main part of her hood, and she was put it charge of beading it. she did a good job, we just have to close up the bottom.

the boyfriend got upset because i hadn't made him anything new, so i'm making him a new doublet today. here's the lining and some of the main pieces, the red silk will show through slashed leather

5  Re: I've been busy!! TONS of PICTURES! updated AGAIN.. pg 11 in Costumes: Completed Projects by themagnificentjess on: October 15, 2008 01:54:20 PM
ok i changed and finished my hood, added a black velvet veil with pretty little gold beads on the edges

i bought some cheap maryjanes and i'm working on beading them to match the dress

i made a necklace to match the dress, a black organza chemise, and added more pearls to the neckline

i made black velvet false fore-sleeves and a chain girdle with a little beading on those too

so.. yeah.. that's what i've been doing to my dress

i also made a hat for my sister's yellow dress and am helping the sister with the green dress make a french hood as well..

ok so i didn't get much done last week, thank god she changed her mind about going saturday, i had the most awful migraines/flus.. ::sigh:: that and it was torrential rainfall out the wazoo this saturday..

so here's what i did today!

i pinned up my skirts and put the trim on the bodice. next i'm attaching the shoulders Smiley

baby sis is a..err.. tad bit bigger than my dressform so i stuffed the outfit Smiley

i'm thinking i should do a cute little crinoline underneath

ok so i re-did my pleating so here's my dress so far.. i need to fix some beads on it and re-hem it and i'll be done the actual dress. I still need a headdress, false-sleeves, and my new chemise/ partlet

my sister wanted me to add that she helped with the beading on her dress.. Cheesy she's learning slowly

10  Re: When there are no customers.. updated! more pics in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by themagnificentjess on: September 29, 2008 01:24:58 PM
so i saw this girl yesterday.. she mustabeen like.. 13 or 14, with her mom at our very suburbia yuppy grocery store.. (and her mom looked like she'd vote for j.m.)
and she was a little wannabe hipster... with a massive rat-nest hairdo that obviously took her about 3 hours to do..

I'm thinking about coloring...
