21  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / summer maternity top- Now with Tutorial! on: June 20, 2006 06:54:22 PM
My brother's gf is having a baby shower next month, so I called her up to ask if she had anything special she planned to wear and she said no, so I told her I would make her something.  She also mentioned needing something comfortable to wear to festivals when it's hot out, and she's late in the pregnancy. So this is what I came up with.  It ties behind the neck and the back.

22  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Shroom Baby Shoes on: June 20, 2006 04:09:17 PM
I got these little white shoes at the dollar store and painted mushrooms on them. They're for my brother and his girlfriend, who are expecting a baby in August, and the two of them are kind of hippies. I think I may paint a onesie to match! Smiley
23  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Re: SLING frustration!! HELP on: June 20, 2006 04:04:07 PM
I'm not sure what you mean by seaming all the edges twice. Do you mean just folding over and sewing a little all along the edge so that it doesn't fray?

Anyway... I think a better way for people to see what I'm trying to ask is by drawing out what I THINK I'm supposed to be doing. Normally I just do trial and error to make things, but the fabric I have is nice batik, and I don't want to slice into it before I know exactly what I'm doing.  Any  help would be awesome Smiley
24  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / SLING frustration!! HELP (now with finished pics!) on: June 20, 2006 11:54:22 AM
An pregnant friend of mine asked me to make her a baby sling. I know they're supposed to be easy to make but..... whenever I read instructions/patterns online, I get really confused. I've looked at so many how-to-make-babysling sites, but I'm just not *getting* it!!

Can someone explain to me, in layman's terms, how to make a baby sling? Maybe draw a simple picture? I just need the general shape and then I can figure out seams/details on my own. I already bought 2 steel rings.

To make the general shape, would I sew together 2 half circle shapes, so they're open at the top like a half a pita pocket??

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Smiley

I really like it! It's so cute, and it looks like it would be comfortable and flattering- I would definitely wear that.

How did the Sweet 16 go?

That is so cute! I would so wear that!!!!

Did you make it from scratch, or did you attach fabric to the bottom of a shirt?

The way the fabric is scrunched up, and the way it drapes on the body- there isn't actually any cleavage.

I was going to take the picture while wearing it, but I thought it would be less clear if I took it in the mirror, but I will add a picture of me wearing it anyway, so you guys can see how the dress fits on.

And no, no pattern used. I am pattern illiterate. And I also don't really buy patterns because I like to make things tailored to my own body, so I just use draping.

I wanted to make something special for when my boyfriend meets my parents and we have dinner together, so I made this dress tonight when I had some free time and extra fabric.  It's not 100% done, as I still have to hem it, but I ran out of thread. Smiley

I was thinking of adding a ribbon to it on the front, under /between the boobs-  what do you think?

P.S.  The fabric is extra from a surprise quilt I am making him! Smiley

29  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / i want my femtv! on: February 15, 2006 09:35:10 PM
The Women's Center on campus is organizing an event called I want my FemTV (take-off of the mtv phrase). And so to advertise, we made t-shirts that we'll be selling. Unfortunately one of them was burnt by the iron, so I said I'd take it and decorate it into something special, and we could use it as the official t-shirt that goes up on the wall for each event. I painted it, cut off the sleeves and painted them and reattached them, ruffle-style, and I added a ribbon belt. So, here it is... from a regular white t-shirt...
