1  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 4 ENTRIES / why all heavy metal fans wear leather.... on: July 28, 2005 09:27:47 AM
i made a silk screen print on a couple of t-shirts with this picture:

it's a picture of rob halford, the lead singer of 80's british heavy metal band judas priest.
rob was gay but couldn't tell anyone since he was afraid that it would affect the bands popularity. so in order to express himself he started wearing the whole leather outfit that was popular among gay people in the late 70's. a whole world of heavy metal fans started dressing just like him and that is the reason that metal heads still wear this stuff!

looking at this picture from the cover of a music magazine in 1984, one can wonder, how come NOBODY had a clue??!

here is a lousy picture of one of the shirts that i finished:

let me know what you think!
i'll try to post some better pictures soon.....

3  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / A simple tie ***TUTORIAL*** now updated! on: July 09, 2005 09:26:41 AM

i've updated this tutorial with s few more pictures, hope it will help a little bit more. but as i mentioned try to look at a tie when going trough the steps, it makes it easier to understand.

here's how to make a simple tie:
i used this pattern for my tie in a previous post

you need 4 pieces, two big ones for the tie itself and two smaller triangles for the backsides.

it might be easier to understand the instructions if you look at "real" tie when making it yourself
my pieces looked like this (we use metric measurements in sweden, sorry...):

as you might see, part 2 is completely straight but part 1 is a bit "curved" in its shape

1. cut out all 4 pieces and put stiffening on them
2. put part 1 and 2 right sides toghter, sew along the green mark

press seams, now you have the tie in its complete length, see picture below

3. put the big triangle at the larger end of the tie, right sides toghether, sew along the green line, trim and turn

4. do the same thing with the small triangle, now you have something like this:

5. fold the tie along the long side, right sides togheter and sew along green line, don't sew all the way to the end! it's easier to turn it if you leave about 2 cm un-sewn

6. the tricky part is now to turn the whole thing inside out... it takes a while!

that's it!!
good luck and please let me know if something is unclear!
