1  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / Embroidering Clothing on: June 03, 2013 08:28:24 PM
Hi all! I feel like I am starting to move from beginner to intermediate slowly but surely. I want to move on from just using backstitch on a hoop. I love the look of a "painted" embroidery like the sky and mountains here https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=422047.0#axzz2VDKnVXZc I am completely terrified of fill stitches though, because my satin stitch looks so terrible! >.<

Anyway, my actual questions...

With embroidering clothing, what fabrics do you use, how do you finish off the back, and how much embroidery do you feel is a good accent without being overwhelming? I've generally always worn plain clothing, and can't find many examples online.

2  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Loial son of Arent son of Halan Poppet on: June 17, 2012 05:52:46 PM
This is my second poppet, made with a lot of help from my mom. Smiley It is a depiction of Loial from the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

He has his long eyebrows and twitchy ear tuffs. The jacket has a working pocket that holds the green book perfectly (which opens and works!). He has buttons all over his jacket (cuffs, jacket tails, the front). The pants have a latch and open and close. The only things I would change would be the fabric of the shirt (it looks very hawaiian...) and give him eyelids. I did attempt that, but it didn't work out... Smiley Still, my last poppet had eyes painted on, so that was an improvement! I think the nose in particular helped to make him recognizable.

The hair was made from faux fur. I'm pleased about that because I haven't seen that method done before. Smiley

5  COOKING / Dessert / Not technically cake.... on: June 03, 2011 09:12:58 PM
The cake is a lie!! Cheesy

I made this Portal inspired "cake" for my husband for his birthday. I could have sworn I got inspiration on this board, but I can't find the link. Huh

Without further ado, my cake!!

My "cake" is make from an upside-down plastic container that I filled with a pyrex cup wrapped in a silicone baking sheet - so it had the right weight and didn't make noise or shift. I stuck it down with glue dots I found in my stash.

I took a funny before picture, but my phone didn't save it I guess. Sad

My husband doesn't like cake, so I'm actually going to bake brownies - but I couldn't pass up doing this as well. I thought about doing cup-cakes and covering them with icing to be a fake "cake" .....but how often can you convince someone to in all seriousness, try and serve a plastic cake? Grin

Looking forward to photos tomorrow!! Or maybe Ill just do video. Should be good either way. Cool
6  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / My own Unicorn! on: June 03, 2011 09:04:59 PM
Hi all!!

My unicorn was (clearly) inspired by this post: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=378541.0

The original poster was even kind enough to give me her pattern for the unicorn!! Thank you SanDorfALot!

I made this for my best friend, after she saw me squealing over the original craftster post. She picked the colors for the mane. Smiley

I hope you like it! She's going to frame it, and send me a better photo. I'll upload that when I get it. Smiley
7  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Steampunk jewelry on: September 14, 2010 08:37:06 PM
So I haven't made jewelry of any sort before, but I was thinking of trying my hand at a piece of Steampunk for a swap partner. I don't want to get too specific in case they see this.

Basically I was wondering if you guys had any tips on where I can find a few supplies quick. Is this the sort of thing I can go to a regular craft store for? (Like JoAnns or Micheal's) Or should I be finding old pieces of electronics at thrift stores and taking them apart? I basically just want to make one smallish piece.
8  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / New craft business name on: August 02, 2010 11:33:52 AM
Hi all.

My current store name is chaoticcurios. I chose that because I didn't want to limit myself to a specific item or anything like that. Unfortunatly, people seem to have a hard time understanding what it means, and I think it's time that I rebrand my merchandise. I'm planning on going with a natural/cherry blossom theme for all items such as avatar, banners, business cards, blog, etc. I think that I would like to use my last name in the store name - Siakel. The name sounds like Cycle, but can also sound like Psycho. Wink I will be selling mirrors and bottle openers for sure in my shop, then branching out to makeup bags and purses. I may (will likely) expand from there to other areas as well, so I would like to keep the name pretty generalized.

I need some help thinking a name up though. I could go with something simple like SiakelCrafts or SiakelCreations, but it's not really calling out to me. I'd like something a little cleverer than that. Smiley
9  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / First Bag on: July 16, 2010 08:01:14 AM
I made my first bag! I love the color combo, and I think it turned out OK. I made a couple mistakes, but overall it's servicable and I know the next one will be much better. Cheesy I'm also proud of using my first zipper. Woo me!

I used this tute https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=176509.0 Thanks!

10  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / My first sewing project! on: June 18, 2010 07:17:51 PM
Ok, it's actually my first since I made a terrible pillow and teddy bear in 10 years ago in home ec. I'm pretty sure it still counts though. Smiley

I got my sewing machine as a wedding gift last month, and I finally had a chance to use it on these pillow cases! I'm really proud, because I just copied the design of my other cases, and figured out my machine by myself. It took me about 6 hours to figure it out and get it all together. I think the next thing will be really fast though, because almost all of the actual work was done in the last hour or so. Any who, on to the pics!

Sorry for the image quality, I took these photos with my phone. I was just really excited to get pics up right away!
