1  CANADA / Quebec / Local knitting groups/stitch 'n' bitch? on: March 09, 2010 06:21:07 PM
I'm a new Montrealler and don't know many people yet. Is anyone part of a knitting/crafting group that I could tag along to? Back in Ottawa there were tons of groups that got together to knit in pubs, I'd love to find something like that here.

Beggars can't be choosers, but I'd love to attend something close to home in Ville Marie or close to work in Westmount.

Hi everyone,

For some reason, everyone in my office has thriving vegetable gardens, and I go home with a lot of free veg.

But, now I have one giant zucchini in particular that is giving me trouble. I don't want to just cook it as I would any other zucchini because I understand that the really big ones are mealy and not so tasty.

So, zucchini bread it is. And I'm in the last stages of becoming a vegan, so vegan zucchini bread.

There are lots of recipes out there, but they all seem to use that NRG egg replacer stuff - which totally isn't available here. And I probably wouldn't spend the $$$ on it if it was.

So, I'm wondering - do any of you have any vegan zucchini bread recipes WITHOUT commercial egg replacer in them?

(Bonus points for chocolate/carob zucchini bread, I'm a chocoholic like that)

Hi everyone... ok, I have a bit of an odd question for you. Whenever I get a tofu dish from a Chinese/Szechuan restaurant (normally Szechuan), it is always so delicious... the tofu is light, fluffy, almost pillow-y. How do I get my tofu to do this, instead of the cakey tofu I wind up with? is it a different kind of tofu, or a different cooking method?

Come on... we've all done it. Whether we've seen a meat recipe and thought it would transfer well to seitan or tofu, or decided to re-invent a favourite omni dish to be veggie-friendly, or just plain made something up... and it didn't work. In a big way.

What are your vegetarian cooking disasters?

Here are some of my latest ones:

-On Saturday night, I decided to try this peanut tofu dish. I'd seen a recipe for chicken with a peanut crust, and I thought "Hey! This will work on tofu!" Wow, did it ever not work. The crust didn't stay on (in hindsight I should have used egg white or SOMETHING), and when I tried to fry it, the crust fell off into the oil and turned into a smouldering, stinking, black, oozy mess. I still haven't tasted the results (the tofu itself was fine, actually quite crispy and not burnt, if crust-less), but I doubt it'll be good.

-Years ago, I went to a hippie music festival with a girlfriend of mine. (I'm from a community of aging hippies, and we celebrate everything with a weekend of camping) We stayed with her mom, who is a vegetarian (both my friend and I were omni at the time) , and she made us tofu dogs (not veggie dogs, tofu dogs)... problem is, she boiled them. Over-boiled them, at that. They were mush! Tasteless, textureless mush! We took one bite and had to pitch them into the bushes, they were so gross.

I know you've done stuff like this too!
5  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Plastic flower tubes on: February 16, 2008 09:13:55 PM

I have about two dozen plastic flower tubes that are very similar to this - except that the lid and tube are completely clear, and the bottom is rounded. They're the little things that come on the bottom of cut flower stems, with water in them so that you don't have to put them in a vase right away. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can reuse them? I'd hate for them to go to waste.
