17  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Not a knitter...how many skeins of this do I need to buy for a scarf & hat? on: November 19, 2004 11:49:09 AM
Hi!

I am not a knitter...but my friend has recently taken up knitting and wanted to knit me a scarf. Since I am allergic to wool, I told her I'd buy the yarn so she didn't have to worry. I think I have decided on this yarn:

http://www.theknittinggarden.com/ggh-goa.htm

The description says:
50% Cotton
50% Microfiber
Approx. 66 yds/50g
Gauge:  3.5 sts/1in
Needle: US 8-10

I have no idea what this means, but I need to know how many skeins to buy for a normal lengthed scarf and possibly a beanie/skull cap type hat. I know it might depend on the stitch she uses and stuff, but I am just looking for a ballpark. She has no idea either being a new knitter and only having a few scarfs under her belt.

Would 3-4 skeins cut it?

Thanks in advance! Smiley

Yes, they are evocotive. They remind me of the characters from the "Little Miss" and "Mr. Men" books I had as a kid....very cute.
