1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / What happens in Vegas - stays in Vegas! on: August 12, 2007 03:32:56 AM
Yup - that's the theme for our university ball this year. Smiley
Unfortunately, this leaves me completely lost with what to make. I don't want to look trashy, and I'm thinking it means a bit more Brisvegas than Las Vegas anyway, considering we're in Australia! hehe also, I'd already bought this pattern a while ago:
Which I was going to shorten... but now I'm a bit worried it's not really "vegas" enough. What does that mean, anyway?! How can I either make this look more "vegas" - or if that's impossible, what exactly does look "vegas"? Smiley
My friends are boring and will most likely be wearing cocktail dresses from Gasp. I'm different. Smiley
Any help would be appreciated!
2  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Valentine's Day on: February 12, 2007 12:11:41 AM
What are you guys making for V-Day dinners and desserts and such??

I'm having a bunch of single girls over Grin but it's after dinner so I'm just making vegan chocolate cake, strawberries in dark chocolate... and then my mind goes blank. What on earth can I make them?! No one is vegan except me, but I won't cook anything with animal products.

Would love to hear what you all have planned. Smiley
3  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / 2 hour, $2 plain blue dress on: January 25, 2007 11:05:44 PM
So, it's Australia Day today Grin And I didn't think I'd be going out last night, because I recently cut my foot, had stitches, etc. etc. But my foot felt walkable at 5pm so I thought why not? And then... oh bugger, I have nothing to wear.

Had a few metres of this stretchy teal material lying around (which I got for $1 per metre)... basically measured myself then cut two slanted rectangles and sewed them together. I'd decided I wanted the top to fold over so that I could go braless Grin so just extended the top, then sewed it over permanently. Added ribbon for a halter.

Excuse the crappy bathroom shots.

It looks kinda weird with a red belt, but I needed to be wearing red white and blue, and my shoes were white Smiley I can see where I've gone wrong - where it's a bit lumpy, etc. - but I think it's not a bad effort considering I was ready to go out by 8!
4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / How do I make a bullet belt? on: January 21, 2007 03:04:21 AM
I'm making an army girl costume for our first week back at university (it's always themed - this year is "camo"). I'm halfway through reconstructing an old men's shirt but I'm a bit stuck as to what to do with the belt. The effect I'm looking for is this:

WARNING Adult Costumes (no adult images though)

It seems to be a regular PVC belt with the front part having bullets on it...
Is it POSSIBLE to make bullets?? Or do I have to buy them? Any idea where I could buy?

Any help is appreciated Grin
5  CLOTHING / Costumes: Discussion and Questions / Tarty firefighter costume on: October 29, 2006 01:59:18 AM
So, I live in Australia and Halloween isn't a big deal - so basically I've never made a costume! But this isn't for Halloween: every year my university has a "sex fetish" party where you go as your favourite fetish. Er... best if you don't read into that too much. Anyway, this year I went as a dominatrix, and it's always full of the typical schoolgirls and nurses costumes that take no thought whatsoever. But I saw this firefighter costume and thought "$120 - get ****ed!", and that maybe I could somehow make it myself...

So... what do you reckon? How do I even BEGIN? I haven't found a pattern I could base it on, other than to do a basic long-sleeved dress, lower the neckline, shorten the skirt...! Also any suggestions on where I should look for material?? I have a LONG time to get this organised (over 6 months) because I want it to be perfect: although we're MEANT to look slutty I don't want to go too overboard... (Also, anyone reckon the fire-engine red will clash too badly with my red hair - or should I don a blonde wig... haha)

Thanks in advance guys!
6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Best friend: 80's style! on: September 28, 2006 04:27:49 AM
So I'm relatively stumped as to what to do for my best mate for her 19th birthday Smiley

She's the funkiest girl I know. Her style seems to be mostly 80's: she wears a lot of animal print, everything she wears clashes but somehow just works.. She's girly but not in the pink way Smiley The problem is, we were only born in the late 80's! I know basically NOTHING and 80's style does NOT suit me at all (send me back to the 30's...). So any suggestions on what I could make her? I'm a sewer, primarily. She loves everything I've ever made (even the gross stuff) so here's what I've got so far:

-- a condom wallet. Y'see, we're in university together, and she's a virgin (certainly not for lack of offers!). We're all terribly proud of her for it and this is the joke pressie. She'll get it.
-- a few metres of some fabric (I was thinking some random animal print), and an "IOU: one sewing lesson". I've been promising it for ages.
-- a photo collage. Here's where I was thinking I could throw in some 80's stuff, along with the photos... Help?

This is also combo Christmas present because I'll be in Cambodia (w00t!) for Chrissie... so it can be an xmas theme...

Help? Smiley I mostly need some kind of idiots guide to the 1980's!

Love in advance. xoxo
7  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / My first bag (kittyninha's circular bag) on: September 23, 2006 01:19:05 AM
Made my first bag!

Was to go with this dress.

Never made a bag before, was interesting Smiley Think I'll try another...
8  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / "Spring racing" dress on: September 22, 2006 11:35:38 PM
My university holds this huge ball every year, with 900-1000 people, all tickets sold out. Smiley There's a different theme every year and this year was "Spring Racing Carnival" - I live in Melbourne, so even though I'm against horse racing, everyone just goes crazy this time of year for the fashions and all... Anyway, this is what I made. I also made this bag to go with it.

(sorry about the lame shots!)

I've got about 100 shots from the actual ball and unfortunately only two of them show the dress! The second unfortunate is that in one of these photos, my friend is nearly naked in a g-string. So I kinda blurred it. ... Be grateful, believe me.

Comments appreciated! Wink
9  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / My first dress: black halter for cocktail party on: September 01, 2006 01:53:33 AM
Hey guys! This is the first dress I've ever sewn 100% by myself (no help from Mum). Used Vogue 7521, view A, with a fair few modifications. I made it about a month ago for a cocktail party held by the ski club at the university. Unfortunately I haven't got any photos from the night (free cocktails - too drunk Smiley) but just took these before:

The dress on my bed

Sorry about the cruddy bathroom shot

The skirt is super super super full! It has the best twirl Smiley But I couldn't figure out how to take an action shot of myself.

So yeah. Smiley
10  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Vegan Pavlova - anyone know how? on: July 07, 2006 04:42:41 AM
It's my mission in life to discover how to make a vegan pavlova. I'm half-Australian half-New Zealander - I have to learn how to do it!!

Any suggestions...? Even if it's not a recipe, any ideas that I could work/experiment with?
