1  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / Slipcover encouragement! (and questions, of course) on: June 18, 2008 07:05:18 PM
Hey folks,

so I told a friend I would make her a slipcover for her sofa. I believe she wants a "relaxed" shabby chic kind of thing, and she said I can use the old ripped one as a pattern for the new one....

I am a little nervous b/c I've never made one before, and I don't know what I've gotten myself into! So I'm wondering exactly how scared I should be, and also, if there are some pitfalls to avoid, mistakes you all have made and learned from, etc.  Huh

Also, she insists on paying me fairly at whatever I deem the going rate....any ideas what a fair price is? She's providing the materials.....

Thanks in advance for your help!

3  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Hair Powder/Dry Shampoo?? on: April 05, 2008 04:00:53 PM
Hi friends,

I am looking for recipes for making my own dry shampoo or hair powder to cut down on showers (I have super greasy hair and am trying to cut down on how often I shower- saving water, you know...).

Bumble & bumble makes what I'm told is a wonderful hair powder but it costs like 40 dollars for a few ounces, which is CRAZY! I want to make my own- preferably corn starch based (which I think is the main ingredient in the B&B version). I do not want to use talcum powder, as it can actually be very, very dangerous and carcinogenic to breathe in!!

Anyone have any experience with this?
(If not, I'd still like to know about any cheaper, organic alternatives to the bumble&bumble stuff.....)

Thanks! Grin
4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / zippered pouch swap? on: February 28, 2008 06:00:09 PM
I'd be interested in a really straightforward zippered pouch swap- a quick, simple kind of swap- people could sew, knit, embroider or embellish, etc. people could specify what they want to use their pouch for- coins/money, glasses, tampons, makeup, ipods, etc....anyone into it?
5  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / where to buy paper lanterns? on: August 04, 2006 07:39:49 PM
i need a plain-ish paper asian-style lantern, either round or oval shaped, preferably in a neutral color.  where can i find this? i know i could get one from the pearl river website, but i dont love the shipping charges... i dont see them on the micheals or joanns webapages, but does anyone know of a chain or store in the worcester MA or hartford CT area where i could find one relatively cheap?

7  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / DIY sinus awesomeness. on: September 14, 2005 08:38:04 PM
I hope this is ok to post here- I use this thing called a Neti Pot to clean out my sinuses everyday. Basically it  looks like a little gravy boat thing (link to picture below) that you use to pour warm saltwater up your nose- it goes in one nostril, cleans out your head, and comes out the other side. Its not nearly as weird or creepy as it seems, and cuts down on sinus problems, which is a total help to me. its good to avoid antibiotics when possible, and I always feel kinda crafty when I use mine....

Also, has anyone ever made their own?? Out of clay?
8  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / fancypatchy jeans. on: July 18, 2005 10:01:01 PM
I bought these wonderful jeans when I spent a summer in Madrid. While it is lovely there, I lost about 15 homesick pounds and looked totally emaciated. Once I was back to healthy, normal me-size, nothing I bought there fit any more.

The patchwork is made from really rich, velvety upholstery fabrics.

I always get compliments on these, and its a nice way to salvage stuff that doesn't fit anymore. Enjoy.
9  New York / New York: NYC and Long Island / Prices at Artists and Fleas?!?! eeeeeeeeeek, help!! on: July 01, 2005 12:54:23 PM
Has anyyyyone been to Artists and Fleas in Brooklyn? I'm sharing a table there in a few weeks and have no idea what prices are like. What might I charge for wrist cuffs, purses and reconstructed sweatshirts??

any feedback greatly appreciated. Grin
10  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / circle skirt. yesssssssssss. on: June 28, 2005 09:13:27 AM
This is a skirt I made a while ago. It was my first circle skirt, and thus, is a little wonky...but I like it anyhow. The waist is really high, like old school skirts and has big button closures. And, its really good for spinning!!!

That's my puppy in the pic, ain't he cute?

Thanks for lookin'. Smiley
