1  Toe guards for roller skates in Shoes: Completed Projects by zanthess on: May 24, 2009 11:28:11 PM
Hope I'm posting this in the right place.

I've just gotten into roller derby, training right now. I recieved some cash from family to go out and buy a nice pair of speed skates, and on top of that I got some toe guards.

Within two practices the traditional guard was so loose I could push it to the side, and the thought of ruining my skates drove me to thinking all hours of the night to come up with a custom pattern.

I know there are a lot of designs out there, but I wanted to make one that only had one layer of leather under the toestop to make sure it doesn't unscrew.

Anywho... here's a pic of what I have so far, with a side-by-side comparison.

Top view of both skates.

Side-by-side comparison of coverage. Derby girls skid a lot on their toes when falling/getting up/etc. and it's not just on the toe!

Just showing the underside with only one layer of leather, connected up to the side of the guard, so there's no way this thing is slipping anywhere!

I've never worked on leather/suede before, and this was a pain in my side!!!

Any suggestions as to thread/needles would be most appreciated. I used the singer brand needles on my machine and they were horrible.

2  Another Cat Jacket in Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects by zanthess on: October 08, 2008 07:13:42 PM
I made a hoodie for my mom's cat about a week ago, and we got together to make her another one.

We worked out the pattern a bit more and came up with a comfy fleece coat. The house was so cold she was running around crying, while looking for a heating vent.

When we put her new coat on her, she lied down and relaxed...

And then went to sleep!

Hope you liked it!

3  My second ever project... Gaucho pants! in Clothing for Curvaceous Craftsters: Completed Projects by zanthess on: October 04, 2008 08:42:43 PM
Well I lied.. It's my first project ever done completely by myself, except for a bit of sizing help from my mom.

I needed something to skate in to get myself in shape. My goal is to be healthy enough come springtime to try out for my local roller derby league. Unfortunately, most companies figure the wider you are, the shorter you are, and so workout pants always look weird on me. I wanted something that I could cool off in, but wasn't too crazy to wear to the rink. Plus, I needed something to show off my crazy collections of socks. Tongue

I had to adjust the pattern a bit, but all in all I'm pretty proud of them!

What do you guys think?

4  Hoodies for cats! in Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects by zanthess on: October 01, 2008 11:31:21 PM
So there are two reasons why I found it so difficult to find any type of outfit for cats.

One: Most cats don't need the extra insulation, and will feign death or go on a rampage when you try to put the outfit on, resulting in blood loss.
Two: You get permanently branded as the "creepy cat lady"

Well, luckily, I don't fit in either. My mom has had a Sphynx (hairless) cat for about 6 months, and now that it's getting cooler, has remembered how bone-chilling cold my stepdad keeps the house (to save money).

Worried as she is about her kitty, we found a few XS dog patterns (McCalls M5544). The XS was still twice her size, but we were able to shorten it a bit, and now have a pattern made just for cats!

This is my first clothing project, so any suggestions are welcome! What do you guys think?

My mom thought it would be funny to pull the hood over her head. Instead of freaking out, she curled up and went to sleep! This cat is weird...
