1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Casual vs Office wear! on: April 11, 2009 12:23:10 AM
When I was out shopping the other day, I tried on a top that looked exactly like Butterick 4985; http://www.butterick.com/item/B4985.htm?tab=tops&page=2 (the blue one). The one at the shop was made out of a stretch checked material, and I could only find black material to re-create it.

It occured to me that the only thing making it casual was the design of the fabric and if I made it in black it would just look like I was going off to work! Does anyone have any ideas for design features I can add to this top to make it look much more casual? I got as far as a ruffle on the collar and possibly a tie on the back and I'm not sure either of those would be enough..

Nice job with the colour matching on the Slipknot print! I suck at it and can never get it quite right, yours really match. I can't believe you cut up some t-shirts into such flattering skirts, they look really good on you. I love the green in particular.

This really is a stunning piece of crafting, like everyone has been saying it looks very professional.

I actually think the fake fur is really working with this jacket, I think it looks better than possum perhaps would of. Which I didn't actually think would be expensive, how much did they want for one skin?? I have several living outside my bedroom window that you can have for free.. they're so noisy!

Was the leather very difficult to work with? I love the lining  Smiley

edit; I just looked at your profile, hey Perth buddy! I also only just saw your avatar, I am SO in love with David Bowie.

Man, this looks awesome. I've been way too frightened to even think about doing it to my tour shirt from this year. How did you get it so there aren't huge folds of material going from your armpit to your boobs?? I just can't figure out how to do it so that the shirt is tight enough to look good but loose enough so that my boobs aren't islands in a sea of stressed, foldy fabric.

It looks great!

Yeah I'm going to have to disagree too! This suits you perfectly, the style looks like it was made just for you. The skirt has such a lovely flare to it and your hips are just the right size to pull the whole thing off, I'm very jealous.

I'd definatly try making it in another material before you decide you don't like it because if I could look like you do in that dress I would live in it!

Those are some pretty impressive looking hats! They're so well made and you've chosen just the right fabric for both of them. I especially like the first one, the flower spices up the muted colours. Fantastic!

I agree with Happychick, it doesn't clash at all and you look really nice in it. Try wearing it down the shops or the park and see how you feel! I like the contrast of your dark hair and the bright colours and it's such a pretty dress.

I love all cat-eared hoodies but these ones are particularly striking. Much more interesting than just black and white, I really like the colour combo and the shape they're stuffed in, especially the one that tilts forward  Smiley

The title and the before pictures had me a bit sceptical but I am a total convert! I'm also not at all surprised you won, it looks amazing. I doubt I could ever make a shower curtain look like a professional piece of clothing like you did. Good on you!
