2  CRAFTSTER CRAFT CHALLENGES / CHALLENGE 123 ENTRIES / Winter Woes Wiped-out by Weaving on: April 09, 2018 11:03:54 AM
After dealing with approximately 20 months of winter in Wisconsin, I decided that our new house needed some added color, fiber, texture, and fun - and this challenge came along at just the right time! Kismet!

Before I go into the fun progress shots, here is the finished art yarn weaving hanging on it's wall, bringing joy every time I enter or leave our house. ***EDIT*** I forgot to mention that this piece is about 10 inches wide by 3 feet long.

Finished Weaving

I knew that I want to incorporate more fiber art into my house, and luckily I had just dyed up some locks this fall. So, I combined those locks with some of my hand-dyed roving and used my new drum carder to make the squishiest batt.

Apparently I love bright colors:

I love my Fancy Kitten drum carder!

Squishy roving strips ready for spinning

I then handspun the roving into thick and thin singles that I then plied toghether to make a super bulky art yarn.

Singles

Plied Yarn

And another shot of the yarn becuase I love it so much!

After this, I wasn't sure how I was going to proceed. I had thought about making a loom using a picture frame, but I decided against that. Then after doing some Pinterest browsing, I decided to create a loom using a piece of wood. I wanted a weathered piece of wood and we just happen to have a set of stairs we are demolishing on our property. After breaking off three bits trying to get a board loose, I gave up on that idea and decided to use a piece of plywood leftover from another project.

I then marked out 1/2 inch spacings, hammered in some brass nails, and strung the nails with some handspun yarn.

First run at warping the board

However, this yarn was way too sticky so I decided to switch the warp with a thinner commercial yarn I had in my stash.

So now I was ready to start weaving my wall hanging. I used the hand-spun yarn as well as roving, bamboo fiber and hand dyed locks to create a piece that is full of texture and color. It only took me a couple of hours to weave and I learned so much. I can't wait to make another!!

Here are some close ups of the finished art

4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / More Art,Less Craft Swap? on: March 14, 2018 08:32:53 AM

Many many moons ago, there was a More Art,Less Craft swap where we traded art with each other. The only guideline to the swap were that you had to use a 6x6 canvas. Other than that you were free to use any medium you wished, acrylics, pastels, mixed media, assemblage etc.

Here is a link to the gallery from that swap in 2012! More Art, Less Craft Swap 2012

Would there be any interest in doing another swap like that? I think I need more artwork in my life  Grin

Details of swap:
The 4x6 Art swap runs like this:  You make ONE piece of art, in your style,  in any medium, how you want.  The only parameters are that you keep it relatively flat, and 4 inches by 6 inches big.   You will have no idea who your partner is, until "Address Time", which will be at the end of the crafting period.  And then you will only know their Address and proper name.  The organizer will do their best to match up partners but do remember that this is essentially a "surprise" swap and no information other than a real name and address will be sent out to you.

7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Fiber Swap?? on: May 04, 2017 06:29:50 AM

Any one interested in doing another fiber swap? I don't think that there has been one in quite a while.

I was thinking we could swap 4 ounces of hand dyed or prepared (combed, carded etc) fiber.

8  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Stumpwork Purple Coneflower on: July 07, 2016 12:22:40 PM
At the Craftster meetup in Canada a few weeks ago, the amazing sheepBlue gave us a lesson in stumpwork. After my initial badge for the latest felt badge swap ended in epic failure, I decided to try out my newly gained stumpwork skills and create a small purple coneflower for PerfectlyBohemian.

Here is a few in-process photos:

The center was done with french knots with pearl cotton thread over a black felt base- not that you can see the felt...

Then I drew out some petals and began the process of securing the wire to the fabric.

A few split stitches later...

Then I cut the petals out, poked them through the felt base and secured them on the other side. One backing piece of felt later and the piece was done.

Now I have the urge to make everything in stumpwork!!
9  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Kindness Mixed Media Hoopla on: July 14, 2015 09:53:48 AM
I wasn't exactly sure where to put this hoopla I created for artsycandice in the Quotes Quotes Quotes swap, but I thought this was a good fit  Grin

I love creating mixed media art, but I wanted to do something that was a little different for me- to push myself to try new techniques. So I decided to start with playing with some of my fiber stash and seeing where things went from there. First I created a sheet of felt by wet felting merino, mohair, Cotswold locks, bamboo and silk- some of which I had hand dyed previously. While that was drying, i decided to play around with some BFL yarn that I had handspun and created a small woven piece. At this point I had thought that I would embroider the quote onto the hoopla when it was done, but when I tried that, the stitches kind of sank into the fiber background. So I pulled out my polymer clay supplies and rubber stamps and went to town.

After attaching the poly clay quotes and the woven piece, the hoopla still looked a little plain so I decided to add some french knots and seed stitches with embroidery floss, ribbon and handspun yarn. I also needle felted some more Cotswold locks onto the piece.

I am pretty happy with how this turned out- especially since I was winging it the whole time  Grin
