1  Mystical Talismans (9 images) in Needlework: Completed Projects by UrsulaDiamond on: August 04, 2011 06:26:30 AM
I made these the other day as kind of my take on an embroidered talisman.

From Wikipedia : A talisman (from Arabic طلسم Tilasm, ultimately from Greek telesma or from the Greek word telein which means to initiate into the mysteries) is an amulet or other object considered to possess supernatural or magical powers.

They're all 3" or smaller, stitched on 14 count aida with crochet cotton. I kind of just made up the designs as I stitched them. I was looking at pictures from books about alchemy, witchcraft, occult, astrology and that kind of stuff.

Thanks for looking!

2  Victorian Pansy in Needlework: Completed Projects by UrsulaDiamond on: July 25, 2011 07:12:40 AM
So I posted my Victorian Rose and thought I should add the matching pansy I did.

This one is also on 24 count tea dyed linen. The black lines are stitched in stem or outline stitch. The leaves were stitched and then painted. It took about three evenings to stitch. The pattern is my own design and was based from an antique pattern.

P.s. if anyone is interested I send a 5 minute video of myself working on this piece to the blog "This Is Handmade" if you'd like to see you can do that here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW9NR-pm4PY&feature=player_embedded

3  Victorian Rose in Needlework: Completed Projects by UrsulaDiamond on: July 24, 2011 03:31:33 PM
Hey Everyone,
I haven't posted a project in about 3 years or more so I thought since I'm back and commenting all over the place I should share one of my recent ones.

I based this on an antique pattern of a rose bouquet. The outline is stitched. The red is painted. The leaves were first stitched in green and then painted with a brown/red colour. I actually used brown and mixed it with the red I used for the rose so that the tones would match. It's on 24 count linen in antique white. I've mostly stitched on muslin or other cottons and recently switched to the linen and I'm really happy with the way it looks. For me it's just a lot easier to work with and gives a cleaner stitch than when I was sewing on muslin. One thing I did notice is you can't use round hoops on linen unless they are larger than the design because as you can see it leaves a ring, I never had that issue with muslin. This took about 3 nights to complete and is about 7.5"x7". Anyways hope you like it!

6  Death By Books? A year's labour in Needlework: Completed Projects by UrsulaDiamond on: December 01, 2008 10:03:55 AM
So.. I started this about a year ago (Dec 07) and it had been sitting half done for months and months. Then I heard about the Old School Sewing Competition on Flickr. (http://flickr.com/groups/[email protected]/pool/) I decided to finish it and enter it in the historical category and follow the folk art theme. Under the pics I've got info on what kind of techniques and sitches and all that.
Anyways you should all go check out the contest (click the link above) and starting Dec 2 you can vote for public favorite (vote for me!!!!! haha)

"Old School Sewing Competition
Untitled entry by Ursula Thomson
Category: 2D Traditional
Theme: Folk Art/My Heritage
Notes: This piece in based on historical and antique tattoo flash and tattoo themes. I consider this to be part of my heritage because tattooing has had such a huge impact on my life, my partner's life, and my family's life. When I'm dead and gone the one thing that will be remembered is tattoo art. I started this piece in Dec 2007 and worked on it on and off untill Nov 2008. The piece features trapunto quilting, traditional quilting, piecing, applique and reverse applique, and surface embroidery, all done by hand. Some of the embroidery stitches used were backstitch, whipped stitch, french knots stem stitch and more.
Dimensions: approx. 12 x 14 inches. "

10  8 New Pieces.. yeah I have a lot of time on my hands in Needlework: Completed Projects by UrsulaDiamond on: October 30, 2008 10:44:30 AM
So I do piecework sewing for a living and usually I have about a week or so between orders. I decided to spend one of those weeks working on some things to sell at the San Jose Tattoo Convention. My boyfriend was lucky enough to be invited to tattoo there as it's an invite only convention so I was even more lucky to get the chance to sell some art there. This is the first convention I've sold at and I can not believe that he sold all but one embroidery I sent.
They are all hand appliqued and embroidered with machine pieced borders. They are backed with muslin and all have one or two lines of machine quilting to hold it all together. I used stabilizer after the embroidery was done to make the piece work easier. They are all based on old tattoo flash and measure about 4 to 7 inches including the border.
Anyways here's the pics!

this one of the shield is the one that came back home
