21  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Sunset Yarn (pic heavy) on: January 04, 2015 06:19:10 PM
Hello friends! Nobody has posted here in a long time and that makes me sad. Sad SIX YEARS ago, (wow!!!) Fiber Friday inspired me to start spinning, something that has become such an important part of my life! I seriously can't imagine what my life would be like if I didn't have this awesome skill. So the thought of the community here dwindling makes me sad. Seeing as I've recently been re-inspired to start spinning again after a looooong hiatus, I figured I would share a yarn that I really enjoyed spinning recently.

I took lots of pictures so I could have a start-to-finish photoset for my blog. I'm sure this isn't anything too exciting process-wise for you all, but I'll post them all anyway for the "yarn-porn" factor. Wink The fiber is from Three Waters Farm which sells locally where I live. Yay local!

I'm a bit out of practice so this came out a little sloppy...but it knit up really nicely so that's all that matters! I spun it pretty low twist (so much so that it broke in a few spots while plying...oops...) so it's super fuzzy and soft. The colorway worked out magnificently for a Grey Gardens.

These are awesome! I love the colors you used. Especially the middle one, the way the accent colors blend into each other is amazing! Cheesy

Prompt:  December Battle Royale
Team: Multimedia
Project Name: Sunset Grey Gardens
Brief Description: When I looked at the colors in this yarn, it reminded me of a sunset. Since the sun sets in the west, that's the side I'm picking for this prompt. Smiley I bought this fiber at my local yarn store, and the fiber is prepared by a local woman who owns her own farm. ^_^ I spun a 3-ply yarn (chain plied) at about 11 wpi (so more or less worsted weight). The twist for the singles was fairly low so I had some problems with my yarn breaking while I plied it, however the result was a super soft, fluffy yarn! Then I knit it into a Grey Gardens (my yarn I submitted for my last prompt didn't work out because it was too thick). I think it turned out super pretty! The color repeats were pretty much perfect for this project. Sadly despite checking my gauge and the length being exactly what the pattern said it would be, it came out about 2 inches too wide and is a little hard to wear. I'm thinking about taking it out and doing it on smaller needles. I'm not sure! It's staying for now, anyway.

Project Name: Serious Stash Busting
Brief Description: I consider myself a textile/fiber artist, which is something I came into doing because of this lovely forum, but to be fair, it's in my blood! Like many Americans my heritage is all over the place, but my most recent immigrant ancestors were from Bradford, England, and they were involved in the textile industry there. I get a lot of satisfaction from carrying on this craft which is a part not only of my heritage, but integral to civilization itself! :p Also, I just want to share that this fiber has been in my stash for almost SIX YEARS. O___O It's a merino/silk blend that I impulse bought in early 2009 right after I first started spinning. Back then I spindle-spun some sock yarn (3 ply sock yarn on a spindle...yes I was crazy...) with a different colorway of the same fiber I bought from the same Etsy shop, but I never figured out what I wanted to do with this one. I'm glad I finally got around to doing something with it! It's about 10 wpi and I think I'm going to make a Grey Gardens with it.

Prompt:  December - New Zealand
Team: Multimedia
Bonus Points: UFO
Project Name: Silver Fern Merit Badge
Brief Description: My boyfriend's family has a strong personal connection with New Zealand. I don't know all of the specifics, but I know that they lived there for a year, visited at least once aside from that, and my bf's brother is going to study abroad there this upcoming semester. After seeing all the merit badges I was making, BF's dad commissioned me to do a few as stocking stuffers for the family, and this one is of a silver fern, which is a symbol for New Zealand. I started it a few weeks ago but stopped halfway through because I wasn't feeling well and was caught off-track by other crafts. I finally sat down today to finish making it.

Cool projects so far, everyone! This is my first time joining the Nerd Battles so I'm pretty excited :3 I meant to join in the Fall but I let myself get overwhelmed by preparing for a craft show. I've chilled out a bit now and am starting to get back into some of my favorite crafts I've been neglecting for a while, so I'm super excited to join all of you!
