51  UNITED STATES / Virginia / Anyone in Haymarket/Manassas/Fair Oaks, surrounding area? on: December 14, 2007 10:12:06 PM
basically FFX co. I haven't been to any of the specialty shops around this area yet; I just really got into crochet and would LOVE to find or create a group for us 'further out' NoVa peeps. I figured i'd start here to see if anyone sees the post and maybe branch out to craigslist and look up some local shops and see what they have to offer. I myself am in Haymarket.

Anyone else? are you out there??  Wink
52  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / fisherman's ring granny square... HELP. on: December 13, 2007 08:39:03 AM
I cannot get past the foundation ring. I've gotten to the first "sc in the same st as joining, ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc in the next dc, turn, sc in each of the 5 chs,  turn, sc in the 2nd skipped dc, *ch 5, sk next unworked dc, sc in the next dc, turn, sc in each of the 5 chs, turn, sc (behind cable) in the last skipped dc*, but i'm not understanding the next part...

Round 1: Ch 3 to count as the first dc; work 15 more dc in the ring; join

with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (16 dc)

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the same st as joining, ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc in the next dc,

turn, sc in each of the 5 chs, turn, sc in the 2nd skipped dc, *ch 5, sk next

unworked dc, sc in the next dc, turn, sc in each of the 5 chs, turn, sc

(behind cable) in the last skipped dc* Repeat from * to * 5 times; ch 5, sc

(in front of the first cable) in the first skipped dc of the round, turn, sc in

each of the 5 chs, turn, join with a sl st to the first sc. (8 cables)

the bolded area is the part i'm having an issue with. I don't understand how to start the next cables, because if i ch5 and attach it to the next unworked stitch in front of the two cables i've just made.... where do i do the.....uhhhh.... yeah. i'm just totally lost. CRAP. the entire pattern is here:

53  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / is this right?? (pic included) on: December 11, 2007 05:14:08 AM

i've highlighted the issue in question with purple arrows.... you see those 'lines' running the length of my pieces??

i have a feeling those aren't supposed to be there, right??

am i working in the wrong loop of the 'bottom' stitch as i go??
54  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Has anyone used Bamboo or Soy yarn? on: December 10, 2007 04:16:28 AM
More specifically Bernat's 'Naturals' bamboo and soy yarn....

I'm wondering how well they wear, how soft they are, how easy or difficult they are to work with. I'd love to try them and you'd think that 5 bucks a skein isn't much but when you are on as tight a budget as *I* am, that's pretty spendy. LOL. I don't want to buy a bunch of yarn i don't like or decide i can't use, and would probably have to order it online as I haven't seen it in my local Joanne's, Michaels, or AC Moore's....

TIA Smiley
55  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / my first pattern- newborn dress!! New pic with new BABY in the dress! :-D on: December 07, 2007 09:27:39 PM
My new baby girl- 02-29-08 Cheesy

I found the simplest pattern to follow that i could...http://bellabambinaknits.blogspot.com/2007/08/sweater-dress-pattern.html

And this is my finished project... I can't wait until baby is here to put it on her!! I'm not due until Leap Year (end of feb) so the wait is going to drive me nuts!!

I used the last of my red heart super saver in Orchid (from the hat and scarf set i made a week or so ago) and then an unlabeled cream yarn that feels kind of wooly, but is probably an acrylic... i'm so happy with it!!
56  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / I've moved on... to cup warmers. (pic heavy) on: December 07, 2007 08:07:58 AM
So DBF asked me one night to make him a sleeve for his coffee (he gets about 2-3 sstarbucks ventis a day... sheesh... anyway, he hates using the cardboard sleeves they have. He also asked for a finger warmer, and this is what i came up with:

then i got requests after i showed a few of my girlfriends (who paid me for them! woohoo!)

i've made 3 more since those 4, all going to good homes. I know its's probably taken, but i'm calling them "green sleeves" for now. alot of our friends are coffee drinkers / greenies and love the idea. Stocking stuffers, here i come!!
57  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / ughhhh i was so excited until i stopped to count.... on: December 04, 2007 05:20:10 PM
I'm using this pattern: http://bellabambinaknits.blogspot.com/2007/08/sweater-dress-pattern.html

First thing, i figured out i am using the wrong stitch. i THOUGHT i was using a double crochet but it turns out that i was using a half double. This will impact the outcome of the size, right? Because i got to what i THOUGHT was row 8 and then stopped to look at what i'd made and it's SOOO small. I decided at the point in the pattern where it has you switch from double crochet to half double to just keep going in the half double i'd been doing frmo the start (i planned on ripping it out and starting it over anyway, i just wanted to keep going to see that it was shaping up how it was supposed to because this is the first time i am ever following a pattern to the T.) and the result i have is too small to fit a 'normal' newborn (around 8 lbs).

SO. i am going to be ripping the whole thing out and starting over and using the correct stitches this time, but what REALLY puzzled me is when i stopped and tried counting the rows i came up with 6 instead of 8.... i have NO idea how i thought i was on row 8 and only have 6 rows.... I'm using the right yarn and the right hook but am wondering if the size of the garment will change when i start over and use the correct stitches??
58  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / The Last Christmas Hat.... on: November 30, 2007 11:06:13 PM
I am DONE... done with all my christmas hat making!! this is the last one i'll post for good!! LOL. I think i've grasped the stitches and tutorials enough to really tackle other projects. It was fun to make this on- my grandmother recently sent me a baby blanket of mine she'd kept for some reason or another, and that's where i got the idea for the 'pattern'. The blanket is a mutlicolor yarn (cream, yellow, green... think baby yarn in the 80's...lol) but the stitch pattern used was exactly like this... i just altered the colors and made a hat instead of a blanket.  Cheesy thanks for lookin'!

i wanted to get an action shot, but my son wasn't having anything to do with the camera today. LOL. eh well... my wood floors do nicely, no?
59  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Felting Q- does it shrink?? on: November 30, 2007 09:10:37 AM
When you felt an item, will it shrink considerably?? I still have to actually buy wool yarn to experiment with, but i'm wondering before hand if it will shrink alot... also, will it retain the 'new' size that it shrunk to, or will it stretch back out with use??
60  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / i'm on bedrest, so i made another xmas gift (kids hat) w/ pics on: November 28, 2007 09:09:35 PM
I've been put on bedrest until further notice- should hopefully only be a few days. Luckily i stocked up on my xmas gift yarn and it gave  me an excuse to work on some projects (all the kids are getting hats... they are all under the age of 5)... this one took me all day because i kept unraveling it to get it to look right. That and trying to keep my toddler in line from the couch is pretty much impossible. HAHA. So anyway, i used bernat softee chunky in navy and olive (hat is for a 3.5 y/o boy) and double stranded it in a double crochet with a roll up brim in a single crochet. Then i used the pom pom tut linked in the crochet discussion forum and made the pom pom for the top:)

close up of the double strand and double crochet:

i'm glad i decided to go double strand- it's getting super cold out here! 29 degrees tonight!
