1  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Quilt Backing Advice on: March 10, 2010 12:56:32 PM

I'm making my first ever quilt, made entirely of squares. Once I've sewn the squares together to make the top, how do I attach the "top" to a backing material?

I realise I could just sew the backing and top together (wrong sides) and then flip inside out, but it wouldn't really give a "quilted" feel.

How could I actually *quilt* the backing and the top; should I just sew them together round the edges, then sew along the seams of the squares through both layers?

Sorry if this is a bit incoherent, I don't really have any idea what I'm doing with this quilt Tongue

That's amazing! Do you laser cut the steel yourself?

Aw, thanks! That's encouraged me to stick with it and make more   Smiley

Any tips for the applique? Even with a big, simple shape like the heart I found the fabric frayed as I cut it. Pinking scissors maybe?

Pretty self explanatory title; I'm home from Uni for Christmas and I've got chickenpox! Obvious solution? Making cushions to pass the time

This was my first time using a sewing machine, so I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out  Smiley

Happy Christmas!

Can I enter the place I live during term time? It's Christ Church, one of the 39 colleges that make up Oxford University. I'm thinking it qualifies as a house because hundreds of students live there full time, and its Latin translation 'Aedes Christi' literally means 'House of Christ'...Yes?  Cheesy

It's mine and my boyfriend's first anniversary on Sunday, and we have a very long standing in-joke about rabbits. So, I've made him origami bunny/heart envelopes. Each bunny contains a numbered card on which I wrote one reason why I love him. Cheesy I know, but I think he'll appreciate it Smiley

They're not actually stuck down on paper, I need to find a box to put them all in...

close up (excuse the slushy message)

all of them

Can anyone give any icing advice? Whenever I make cupcakes, I top them with buttercream icing using a bag/nozzle, but I can never get the "swirly" shape...it just all gloops together and doesn't have a defined shape. What am I doing wrong?
