2  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / You Might Love Sewing If... (Help!) on: October 17, 2011 08:03:15 PM
Hi Everyone!
I am working on a gift for a family member who loves to sew!  Now, I love to craft, but the sewing craft is not my strength... Could I call on your help to come up with a list that will really make her smile?

You Might Love to Sew if...
if the hum of the sewing machine is theraputic.
if you don't notice the late night turning into morning when your project is alllllmost complete....
if you can thead the needle with your eyes closed...

(Ok, so those are not so strong, but that's why I'm calling on your help!!!)
Thanks so much everyone!!
3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Re: Making my own cake- am I crazy?? on: September 23, 2010 08:55:00 PM
I completely hear you!!!
I am currently trying to convince my fiance that making our wedding cake is NOT a foolish thing to want to do!!!
(He has seen me work 8 hours straight on a Gordon the Train Cake that turned out GREAT!)

But a wedding cake does not have to be as complicated as a TRAIN to be beautiful!  Your confetti cake idea is simply lovely!  Elegant!  Perfect Smiley
The wedding cake I plan on making is this one...

Roll out the fondant, Cover it, whip up some royal icing, Slap on a stencil, and you're done!
Add to the fact that I'm also conscripting help, (considering I also will have a dozen or so DIY's on the go too Wink ), will make this one of the easier tasks.  One of my girlfriends is an amazing baker, so she's baking the cake at her house, and whipping up some buttercream.  I'm coming over with the fondant, royal icing, and stencil, and there you have a relaxing evening!

Trying to convince my fiance is the hard part!  Same as your friends who want to take up a collection!!!    Yes, if I wanted an over the top fun and quirky celebration cake, I'll hire someone, I don't have time.  But for beautiful classic... it's really not that bad!  (But please, continue with the collection... it'll go towards the dress!!! LOL)

Please post pics when it's all said and done!  I'd love to see it!

Success!  I have booked a caterer (A friend of a friend) who does catering on the side!  We're having build your own pasta, with a marinara sauce or a white sauce with chicken, and two types of Salad, and a build your own Sundae station!!!  $2,100 for 150 people, including set up and clean up!  She's such a blessing!  I'm so excited!  Just had to share Cheesy

In my investigations, catered buffets are more expensive, or the same price, as a sit down meal... with plated meals, you know how much everyone is going to eat, but with a buffet, you need extra food because people tend to eat more.  The money you save in servers, you spend in extra food.  Still, many prefer buffet, as the guests can choose what to eat, and I agree, it's can still be classy!

Though, I was playing with the idea of having friends and family help with food.  If that's the case, it was suggested by a wise aunt that I lean towards a cold buffet.  That way, no one will miss the ceremony and reception by being in the kitchen!  But still, for 150 people, that may be pretty silly of me maybe!  I think if I want 150 ppl, I need to hire a caterer.  If I really want to reduce my budget, I should invite less people Sad

Or.. not serve a full dinner.  A friend of mine had only a meal for family members, and the rest of the guests (about 150) were invited for only the rest of the reception.  I enjoyed myself, and nobody complained.  In today's economy, we need to do what is financially healthy, and people respect that, (those that truly care for us anyways!!!).  But... it's still not what I had envisioned for my celebration.  I'm still hoping to find a lower budget caterer... fingers crossed!

Our budget is $5,000.
But the quote for catering (150ppl) is $4,000!!!!
Food is the biggest obstacle for us right now.. we're trying to find a low budget caterer!  The $4G quote included linens, plates/glasses/cutlery, serving and cleanup.  I want to find someone who does just food!  Our goal is to have a "Family Fun Celebration" and we do want there to be good food!  If I can collect some tablecloths, (the venue can provide plates & cutlery) and pay some teenage friends to do the cleanup... maybe we can save money!  If I could bring the food down to $2,000, I think we can meet our $5,000 goal no problem!
But until we can find that perfect caterer... it's all up in the air!
Good Luck on your wedding!  Keep us posted!

Sounds Tasty!  I need to get my butt out to New Mexico by the sounds of it! Wink  I think it's too late to ask my mom for a sister though! LOL!  You sound blessed to have yours!  I'm leaning towards asking some ladies at the church to help serve pasta... a build your own pasta dish sort of thing... with Tomato sauce, or Alfredo, or Blush to choose from, and a few toppings like meatballs, or grilled chicken.  It's encouraging to hear I'm not the only one not catering....

Congratulations on the beginning of your life journey with each other!
10  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Re: Coffee Filter Rose bouquet on: June 04, 2010 08:02:44 PM
OH MY GOODNESS!!!  You *just* posted my bouquet!  I plan too in using coffee filter roses.  And you posted yours in *exactly* the colors I want!!!!  I haven't made mine yet, (just in my mind) but now I KNOW it will look gorgeous!!!  As long as mine turns out like yours!  LOL!
(I'm sure there will be variation, as it is with lovely handmade goodness, but this is exactly what I have in my head, and I agree with everyone else... GORGEOUS!)
I will post mine when it's done!  I can't wait till the wedding!  I'm trying to decide on bridesmaid dress colors.  I know for my color scheme I was originally thinking champagne, but when I saw a similar "live" bouquet in these colors, I've been wondering if dusty rose, or pale green, could work.  What are your bridesmaid dresses going to be in?
