1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Friend with Hyperactive Thyroid...Want to send love... on: February 03, 2009 10:43:24 PM
So my best friend from high school goes to college like 9 hours from where I go to college...She was just diagnosed with a hyperactive thyroid and it's pretty intense.  I've had 2 other friends diagnosed with the same thing in the past (I think I'm the kiss of death here...) But with this one, it went unnoticed for quite a while.  It's affecting her heart rate now too, which is why it's especially scary this time.  She might actually have to return to our hometown (which isn't far from where I am now) for treatment.  And might possibly have to drop out of school for the semester...  Undecided

I've never been this far away from someone I care about so much when they're sick.  I want to send her some love.  She's not acting too entirely scared, but I know she's putting up a front... What can I craft and send that will show that I'm here for her, yet not freak her out/make her feel "sick"Huh Any ideas are MUCH MUCH appreciated.

umm...information about her/our friendship is probably helpful, eh?
-we've been friends for 6 years now.
-we've traveled to france together.
-obsession with skittles/peanut M&Ms
-like a million inside jokes that i couldnt begin to explain...
-she's a psychology/theatre major
-she's in band - plays clarinet/sax/flute/piccolo

Idk, that's all I can think of atm.  She just told me about everything like an hour ago, I'm still a little worked up.

Thanks for any suggestions.

2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: THE GENERIC BOYFRIEND GIFT THREAD: A How-To! on: November 19, 2008 03:39:19 PM
Ok girls, I've got a doosy...

I know it's early to start thinking about Christmas, but I have NOOOO idea what I'll do for my boyfriend, so I need a headstart! haha

Here's what makes it hard:
--He's 24, has a full time job, and a 5yo boy. I'm 20 and a college jr.  We're not really at the same points in our lives so it's hard to know what would be useful to him.
--He'll be moving at the end of Jan, so I'm not sure if I should get/make him anything that would go in his apartment since he won't be there anymore (maybe something for the new place? but what?)
--He's pretty relationship-phobic.  We were "together" for like 4 months before we made it official (which just happened last week actually), so I can't do anything too mushy and whatnot.  And I'm sure the L-word is far away, so...

He's definitely a sweetheart though and treats me super well.  He's been going through a tough time lately and I want to do something special for him.
He asked me to knit him a scarf, so I've been working on that.  I would, however, like to give that to him before Christmas maybe, but I might save it if I don't come up with other ideas...

We're both super nerdy.  He's an industrial engineer and that's actually what I'm in school for.  We met once through a mutual friend, but really met when we worked together for a week this summer. I was an intern for the company he works for and we were grouped together for a project one week.  Things have gone really slowly between us since he's scared of commitment, so like we don't have pictures, we don't have alot of inside jokes, that kind of thing...

I'm a fan of compiling a few small gifts, but I'm open to doing one bigger thing as well...

So, yeah, anything? Sorry. This probably didn't make a whole lot of sense...I'm stuck at work and have been staring at a computer screen tooooo long.

Thanks for any help! It's MUCH appreciated. Smiley

6  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Re: Come one come all post your new tattoo IDEAS! on: March 21, 2008 12:07:20 PM
psyche, that would be HILARIOUS. i mean, yeah, i agree w/ batgirl that husband #2 might not exactly like it, but that would be kinda cool...and i mean, if i was getting remarried, husband #2 would need to understand that there was someone before him but it didnt work for whatever reason and he's the new #1......ok, way too hypothetical and weird. lol but yeah, i tend to be an optimist too, so i'd probly end up doing it...i'll just see how it feels in the future, i just think it's a cute idea.... Smiley

ok, i'm WAYYYY too lazy to scroll thru all the 104 pages of posts to find my old post and see exactly what i said, BUT,

I have a tattoo of my full first name, Katharine (I go by Katie) on my back/butt/right hip-ish area. i wrote it myself w/ sharpie on a piece of paper and took it in and he made the stencil-y thingy from that.

So as for my idea for a tattoo way in the future, when i'm getting married/am married (and no, i'm not even in a relationship now, lol): I'd LOVE to have my husband write his last name (my new last name) in his own handwriting w/ sharpie on a piece of paper and go get that added onto the Katharine that's already there. How adorable would that be?! But I'm already scared of the idea....i mean, you're always told to NOT tattoo someone else's name/initials cuz what if i'd divorce him...soooo yeah, that's my idea, but im not sure i'll do it.

plus, i might, between now and then, get my middle name added, so idk if i'd still wanna add the last name...ya know? ok, i'm rambling. sorry.
8  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Need a Birthday Present for her in...6 days!!! :-\ on: March 17, 2008 10:39:33 AM
I need a present for my mom's birthday, which is Sunday, yes, Easter. I'll make it or buy it, i just need help!!!  Sad

Info that might help:
-She'll be turning 51. She's pissed that her birthday is on Easter, cuz she really doesnt get to celebrate it. My birthday is two days before (Good Friday) so we'll probly "celebrate" together.
-just re-did her kitchen, and I would get/make her something for the kitchen, but she's being SO particular about what is in the kitchen/how it is decorated
-she knits
-She lives in the country and loves her animals (chickens, sheep, dogs), she even decorates in farm-animal themes
-hates her job (there is some pretty crappy stuff going on at her work right now)
-she loves to bake, loves chickens, the color blue, reading, and doing the daily crossword puzzle in the newspaper
-she's NOT really girly, she's really kinda tom-boy-ish, doesnt wear alot of jewelry or any make-up or do much w/ her hair...

ok, so any ideas???
there's a crafting store close to where i work that just opened and i've been telling her to check it out sometime for knitting stuff or cross-stitch stuff, so i might get her a gift certificate there? but gift cards are so impersonal... Sad

thanks for any suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!!
