31  Re: Embroidery Swap Gallery in The Swap Gallery by mlheran on: April 20, 2009 11:58:52 AM
I thought I'd post the items I made and collected for americangothic as she is a busy newlywed with an exciting new job that keeps her away from civilization much of the week.  She has received them and said she loved everything, so I hope you enjoy the pics too!

She suggested a pincushion as one of her items, and as I had made a few before I thought it might be fun to do a larger one...

The black fabric is machine-embroidered with mutli-colored thread, and then I embellished here and there with some hand-stitching and sequins.

Inside; some vintage floss from my stash and some new notions...

I confess that my embroidery level is quite beginner, so I felt the pincushion wasn't quite enough and included some vintage embroidered linens from my collection. I'm not sure if this was meant as a tablecloth, but it folds so nicely into an envelope that I used it to hold the handkerchiefs...

Assorted linens crafted long ago by tiny-fingered women with far more patience and skill than myself...   Tongue

And finally, a serendipitous thrift store find -I thought it would be perfectly kitschy for a newlywed!  Grin (and I saved the pic since I'm tempted to make one myself!)

I had fun with this swap and am drooling over all the talent in the gallery!

Be warned -MASSIVE PICS AHOY!!  Grin

So I was working on getting the pics of the stuff I made for MFZB uploaded yesterday, when what should arrive in my mailbox but a package stuffed with FOTC goodness! I was so excited I had to ogle all the items and get the pics up right away!

Check out the haul...

Totally fabulous switch-plate cover!!

Fuel for my Conchordy dreams -a fab pillowcase with one of my favorite lines!

(The backside is a cute vintagy floral too! And no, that's not Charlie, it's my dog, LOL.)

Awesome embroidered zippered pouch! FOTC represent! Pouches are perfect for me since I like to use different bags/purses as the need dictates, so this is awesome!

(Also another of my favorite quotes, by Jemaine)

Five fab Flighty magnets! And some pushpins that totally remind me of their robot nipples knobs. Check out the sexay Jemaine guitar pic magnet! Hey Ladies! Grin

And last but definitely not least, a rockin' robots keychain!! Honestly I think this might be my favorite item -I LOVE that she made it using the clear credit cards you get in the mail, so perfect! But I can't decide if I want to use it as a keychain or a zipper-pull for the nifty pouch... decisions, decisions!  Grin

Thank you SO MUCH for all the awesome stuff MFZB, I LOVE IT ALL!! *runs around in fits of Flighty joy*  Grin

+ + + + + + ++

Okay, now onto the stuff I crafted for MFZB -I had a ton of fun with this swap, so please bear all the pics!  Embarrassed

Since you asked about the clock's construction I'll include this pic... it's most of the materials I used to make the clock-collage-hanger-thingie...

(A funky old wooden picture; a knock-off Hello Kitty clock with a cool sweep movement; metal address numbers; prints of New Zealand, Jemaine's band poster, and screenshots of their bedroom wallpaper.)

And the finished item:

(I cut a hole in the wooden picture to hold the clock movement and used a thin piece of Murray's office wall to hold the movement in place. 307 is their apartment number. At the top is the Muthauckas ATM receipt. The clock has a quote from the racist fruit vendor episode. Below that is a band meeting roll call slip, a Bowie tissue-paper stripe over Jemaine's poster, the map, the wallpaper, and three hooks to add a little more function to the whole thing. Wink )

I love that clock movement -it's perfect for their 80's fashion period, LOL!

Just to be clear...

Next I snuck over to the guys' apartment and totally stole Bret's shirt to make a tote bag! Okay, maybe it was just an INCREDIBLY LUCKY thrift store find.  Roll Eyes Of course, the print went the opposite of Bret's so I just turned it upside-down.

Inside is one of Jemaine's more subdued button-up shirts -with a cuff pocket.

(MFZB, I realized after I sent it off that I forgot to reinforce the straps where they meet the bag, so you may want to do that if you're going to be using it for anything really heavy. Sorry! Embarrassed )

A little Shrinky pin for the bag...

And Shrinky magnets! MFZB said she really loved the Bowie episode and the talking stove, so I included the eyepatch and the stove. (Of course, now that I've watched the episode again I'm pretty sure he says MAKE a cake, not BAKE, but... oh well Roll Eyes )

I got the magnets at the hardware store and they are ridiculously strong. My hubby gave me funny looks when I was playing with them using Mel to repel them all across the smooth tabletop... LOL.

And finally a cup to commemorate the fateful cup of season two, episode two. I used an old office number stamp to print $2.79 on the side using a permanent paint marker. They're made by Sharpie and they're supposed to be opaque and permanent on most surfaces. Never the less, I'd still handwash it gently if I were you!

And to flash some more FOTC love, the bottom has this:

Using the same markers, this time with yellow.

And that's it! This was a totally awesome and wonderful swap, I loved it -can't wait for round three!!!  Grin Grin Grin

I know that I_am_138 has been busy with work and such, so I hope I'm not stepping on any toes if I post a pic of the necklace I crafted for her...  Embarrassed

It was such a blast to work with her suggestions of skulls and safety pins using the materials I could rustle up around the house! I definitely will be experimenting more with safety pins and beads as I really liked the "chain" it produced...

Anyway, enough rambling, here's the legend pic!

And two close-ups:

Rawrr!  Grin

34  Re: Postage Stamp Quilt Square Swap Round 2 in The Swap Gallery by mlheran on: April 01, 2009 10:38:53 AM
Here are all the fabulous squares I've received lately!

From EKO... (that money print is hilarious!)

From elvisstax... (love the rick-rack-esque square!)

From lady4feet... (I'm torn between the red, white & blue floral and the square with the tiny chick!)

From Mlookyloo1... (holy cow, I think these are all unique!)

From Mrs.Zeddies... (that pale purple circle print is so wonderfully retro!)

From Oh That... (I think I'm hooked on the delicate black & white floral!)

From pumpkinbear... (that square of the Joker cracked me up!)

*whew* That was a lot of squares!!  Grin

This means so far I've received from everyone except Shana82 and SaphireFaerie -but I'm stopping by the post office today so we'll see!

Yay, I received my necklace from i_am_138 late last week!  Grin This weekend was a bit hectic, but I was finally able to take some pics today...

Three great chains (I love the weight) with three great silver charms, and the "closure" is an elastic loop -so clever and convenient! (And a sweet gingher box!)

Close-up of the charms...

Not pictured is the delicious Pecan Pie bar she included in the package. *wipes crumbs from lips*  Grin

Thank you so much for a creative swap!!

I know she received the necklace I made for her, but her new job is keeping her busy. I could post the pics I took, if you want?

37  Re: Owl Swap Round 6 Gallery HOOT HOOT send by 2/25/09 in The Swap Gallery by mlheran on: March 04, 2009 09:14:17 AM
I'm so glad you liked everything, h_pets360! When I pack everything up I tend to forget to explain where some of the things come from, so I'll try here...

- The box is an old cigar box (duh) that is probably a million years old that I found at my Grandparent's house, and I had kept odds & ends in it for at least a dozen years before rediscovering and realizing that it fit the swap perfectly!

- You had mentioned to me that your try at stamp carving didn't work out how you liked and I had to laugh -mine are VERY "rustic!"  Grin First time carving and I used some nice vinyl erasers.

- The pouch and pin were destash items -some vintage corduroy, felt, zipper and buttons with a pretty new fat-quarter print I picked up a while ago.

- The journal was indeed from Joanne's! But when I got it home I realized the leaf cut-out on the cover had a couple broken spots, so I just cut it out and attached an owl patch over some ribbon to make a new cut-out design.

- The hairclips were a lot of fun, I got to sort through my big tin of old buttons and even got to make my first fabric-covered buttons. The owl print was a literal scrap about six inches long and two inches wide, I found it in the "free" bin at a craft thrift store and couldn't resist the owls! They were right on the edges of the fabric, alas, so there was no good way to center them...

Again, I'm totally in love with all the items you crafted for me -everyone loves the purse when I wear it out!  Grin

Alrighty, here are my fabulously owltastic items from h_pets360, get your wists ready!  Grin

Clockwise from extreme left:
- A yard of adorable owlies for my fabric stash.
- Sweet owl collage postcard she passed on to me.
- An incredible handbag.
- Charming birdhouse with a welcoming owl. (Nifty clear owl stamp resting on the base)
- A card featuring a billion kinds of owls.
- Four wonderful seasonal owl bookmarks.
- Two handmade Sculpy owl "tags." (in center)

We never have enough in our house, but I've already laid claim to these -I think the Autumn one is my favorite, I just love those little owl faces...

Clay ornaments!
These are so cool, I really need to give Sculpy a try after seeing how awesome these are. Great expressions!

The owl on the birdhouse -how incredible is he?!

The back of the birdhouse, with the nifty clear owl stamp -so cute!

And the pièce de flippin' amazing résistance, a fabulous owl handbag! Upcycled from reclaimed materials and stitched with a sweet sleepy owl -100% win! It's the perfect size and hangs nicely at my elbow, I love it!

The backside proclaims the rallying cry of the owls (lol)!! HOOT!

THANK YOU SO MUCH, h_pets360! You crafted some incredibly delightful owl goodness that I will treasure!  Grin

Here's a close-up of the tags I made on amc-'s Supernatural ipod cozy...

I'm not familiar with the show ( Embarrassed ), so it was a lot of fun finding references, quotes, etc!

Yeah, I thought that was great too -they must have literally passed each other in the mail!

And I know what you mean, this little guy is so cute! Thank you for parting with him!  Wink

Yay, I'm so glad it got to you amc-!! I would've liked to have had an actual chromatic to make a pattern from -my chunky ipod mini just ain't the same!  Roll Eyes BUt I'm glad to see that it fits in there somewhat well though, so I hope you get some good use out of it -it was a blast to make!

And now on to my awesomely adorable item!  Grin

Okay, I'm actually quite tiny!

(and hey, lookit all the neat stamps!)

amc- crafted me the most adorable little owl pin from a squishably soft microsuede fabric with googly eyes! Seriously, I think the people at the Post Office thought I was a little crazy because I kept jiggling it to make the eyes crossed, lol.  Roll Eyes

I can't wait to let it "perch" on my bag! Thanks again!
