21  Re: Etched vases - unicorns, and kitties, and pansies, oh my. in Glass Crafts: Completed Projects by skankamaggot on: December 21, 2008 08:52:10 AM
I have one of these exact ikea vases I etched too  Grin  I think it's in one of my other posts.  They are PERFECT for etching!  I love your flower bloom!  I haven't tried using paint on mine yet, how hard is it to remove the paint after?

Not  at all hard to remove the paint afterwards.  Just let it dry until it is dry to touch (overnight in this case) and etch.  When I painted, I let some of it overlap the tape, so after rinsing off the etching medium, when I lifted the tape, the paint peeled with it.  More hot water helps to loosen any that are more persistent.  What I would NOT do is paint it a week or so before you want to etch it - it may adhere even more.  I found that after I removed some lettering from when I etched my condiment bottles for my kitchen on the counter, they stuck good and hard, and I would have to scrape it to get rid of it.  Also, don't wash it down your sink - it will clog your drain, since it does not dissolve.  Just moisten to loosen and peel.

Even though that sounds so easy, I think I'll stick to my painters tape with an exacto knife method.  I don't think I'd be able to wait overnight for the paint to dry, I'm more of an instant gratification kind of person  Grin

This is my ikea glass

23  Personalized Etched Glass Cookie/Treat Jar with Dachshunds (and cookies!) in Glass Crafts: Completed Projects by skankamaggot on: December 18, 2008 02:14:58 AM
First off, I apologize for the mix of topics, I know I have cooking/pet stuff/glass stuff all in one but I am most proud of the jar so I am posting it here.

For a little back story on this piece, I have a friend/coworker who recently had to take in another dachshund that her daughter could not keep. Lo and behold, puppies!  She had six puppies, and promised me one of them (my fiance and I were looking to adopt a puppy, but who could resist one of these sweeties?).  After they were born two of them were unable to find homes.  One of the girls had a little "handicapped" paw that did not form just right, and there was also a boy.  We decided to take the both the boy and the girl we were previously promised.  My friend kept the "handicapped" girl as her own.  Fast forward to several weeks later, I believe they are 7 weeks old now, we have both pups at home and we are so grateful for both of them, they are great.  I wanted to give my friend something special as a thank you for them (seriously, where can you get two pure bred miniature dachshund pups for free before Christmas?)  so I decided to bake her some dachshund shaped cookies.  Then I needed something to hold the cookies.  After a trip to The Container Store, I knew what I had to make.

A personalized etched glass cookie/treat jar with little wieners!

First side - "Ginger" (the momma dog) and a dachshund silhouette

Second side - Dog bones

Third side - "Sophie" (the little handicapped pup) and a dachshund silhouette

Fourth side - more dog bones.  Originally I wanted to do one side with bones and one with paw prints, but the bones were so easy to cut out with the knife and I was getting tired after all this plus baking a huge batch of cookies.

Oh and of course, the cookies!

Ok, they look a little like buffalo after the cooked..

But the smaller ones look like little wieners!

And... sorry I know this doesn't belong but I HAVE to show off the new additions to our family - Wednesday (top) and Dexter (bottom)

24  Etched Glass Red Sox Beer Mug in Glass Crafts: Completed Projects by skankamaggot on: December 08, 2008 10:53:22 PM
My fiance commissioned me to etch a Red Sox logo on a beer mug for one of his co-workers Christmas Presents.

I have to put a disclaimer that YES we are from Massachusetts and NO we are not Red Sox fans.  Go Blue Jays!  Cheesy

However, I think my mug came out pretty darn nifty.

25  Sock sweater for 5 wk old puppy in Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects by skankamaggot on: December 08, 2008 12:16:13 AM
My fiance and I just got two mini-dachshunds that are 5 weeks old.  They are TINY and shiver like crazy if they're not wrapped up in a blanket.  I was looking for sweaters for them, but the smallest size I've seen in stores around here is xxs and that is way to big for them.  Then I remembered a tut I saw on here for a sock sweater, so I picked up some fuzzy socks at walmart and made a sweater.  I only did one so far but I will be making lots more Smiley  Next time I won't use socks made out of fun fur since it unravels and sheds like crazy but it just looks so darn cute!  I stuck him in it like a sleeping bag and marked where his arms needed to go, then I snipped the armholes and hand stitched around them so it wouldn't unravel, and I cut some off the back (the toe part) and stitched around that too.

Anyway here is Dexter with his new sweater:

(In this picture you can see little Wednesday his sister snuggling with my fiance in the background)

Yay, no more shivers!  Next time it will have to be made shorter on the bum-end so he doesn't dribble pee on it  Roll Eyes

26  Thanksgiving Turkey Cookies (made with giblets!) in Thanksgiving by skankamaggot on: November 27, 2008 03:16:57 AM
Ok I lied there are no giblets in these cookies  Wink

They are sugar cookies with vanilla frosting across the top with candy corn stuck in for feathers, then I used orange icing to make two dots that I stuck mini-MM's too for the eyes, then I used the icing to put on a little beak, and on some of them, feet.  The feet were a little too tricky, so I skipped it on most of them.  I made these for my companies pot luck.  I made them last year too and they were a big hit!  Recipe (or design?) from the Pillsbury website http://www.pillsbury.com/Recipes/ShowRecipe.aspx?rid=40040   Betty Crocker has a similar design this year as well http://www.bettycrocker.com/Recipes/Recipe.aspx?recipeId=46173

Here are mine!

I made a lot more than what is pictured here.  I have to say if you plan on doing these for next year, stock up on candy corn at Halloween time!  It's very hard to find after Halloween, although I did find some at Walmart (and I bought the last three bags  Cheesy)

27  Re: small but fun ikea hack! in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by skankamaggot on: November 25, 2008 04:17:30 AM
I finished my hack of the same clock!

Here is my version:

Funny thing is, I didn't take out any of the "guys" or even the clock face, I only removed the clear plastic part and somehow my hour hand got screwed up?  It's like a little bit fast or too far ahead so it never looks like it's the right time  Roll Eyes  Oh well it looks cute in my penguin bathroom.

28  Dream Until Your Dreams Come True - Aerosmith quote cross stitch in Needlework: Completed Projects by skankamaggot on: November 25, 2008 01:42:00 AM
Ok this is the first cross stitch I've made with a pattern that I designed myself... kinda.  I used the caption maker on cross stitch.com.  I made this for my fiance's aunt for christmas, she loves Aerosmith.  It's from their song Dream On.  I need to find a smaller frame for it (or just mat it) but I think it came out pretty nifty.  Don't look to closely or you'll see my mistakes.  Wink

Pretty Dollar General frame.

29  Old shoe boxes given new life - now beautiful decoupaged craft storage! in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by skankamaggot on: November 17, 2008 03:41:30 AM
I have been hoarding shoe boxes for a while now to use in my craft room as craft storage when I finally unpack everything into the new house.  I have a great ikea expedit bookcase (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3028/2916992357_67c7f58cd4.jpg) which I dream of filling up with beautifully decorated shoe boxes.

I finally got off my butt over the weekend and re-did the first two.  I had been looking for really pretty wrapping paper for a long time and I finally found a jackpot at The Container Store.  They have such beautiful wrapping paper!

Anyway, over the weekend I made these:

Out of two different shoe boxes from the closet.

The white one came out with quite a few air bubbles, but I don't mind.

Bubbly bottom

Here is the brown one.  I LOVE the paper on this one, I am going to have to pick up a couple more rolls for other projects

Open.  I didn't do the sides because they're not visible from the outside.

Sorry, no before pictures, but I have a progress pic.  This box I had to un-do and lay flat because of the awkward shape.

30  Brown/yellow master bedroom with "Always Kiss me Goodnight" handmade wall art in Interior Decorating: Completed Projects by skankamaggot on: November 17, 2008 03:17:15 AM
My fiance and I finally decided that since we are in a new BIG house with a BIG master bedroom, we needed a bigger bed.  For the past year and a half, we have been sharing a full size bed (his feet hang over the edge quite a bit  Embarrassed)  So we went to rooms-to-go and got a brand-y new KING SIZE bed.  Of course this required new bedding, which required new curtains, which made me realize how bare the walls were... so the bedroom we just moved into less than two months ago already has had a makeover.

New bed!  And bedding that I let the boy think he picked out  Roll Eyes  He thinks the bed looks like a big cake.

New wall art - these I finally hung up last night.  They say Always Kiss Me Goodnight.  I did the whole thing in acrylic paint, including the lettering which was done by hand with an acrylic paint pen (the best thing ever made!).  The Me canvas came out a little wonky, its a tiny bit smaller than the others, plus the canvas was stretched funny over the wood on the far right hand side so the paint didnt come out quite right either.  Oh well, I LOVE them.

Work in progress note on the canvases - after I had painted the background on them and was waiting for them to dry, I caught Frank lounging on them  Shocked  Luckily, acrylic paints dry fast and the damage was minimal, only a few cat hairs stuck in the paint.

This pic shows the new hanging art as well as the curtains.  The curtains are very dark, but there is a reason for this.  The brown curtains are actually black-out drapes.  My fiance and I both work the third shift so we are day-sleepers and need the room very dark during the day to help us sleep.  The black scarf I draped across the top helps keep out those extra bits and slivers of light.

Curtain detail.  Yes, they need to be ironed  Cheesy

View of the other side of the room.  This pic was taken while the old bed was still there and while we were still unpacking trash bags of clothes.  I love both of my dressers VERY much.  The first dresser, the bigger one with the mirror, I bought with the full size headboard in Massachusetts about 5 years ago.  Fast forward to a couple months ago, my fiance and I are shopping around for dressers because we needed a second one due to a smaller closet, and by some act of fate we found this beauty, what you see holding up my TV.  It's an EXACT match to the set I bought 5 years earlier.  Same detailing, same hardware, same finish, everything.  We found it at a bargain furniture outlet - and get this - it was the LAST ONE they had!  We had to buy the floor model. I LOVE IT!

Here are some before pictures:

Old full size bed which has been relocated to the guest bedroom.  Yes, I still have the sheepskin rug in the same location (MY side of the bed  Grin)

Old window treatments... as pretty as these were they obviously let in WAY too much light for what we needed.

A very before-before.  Before paint and furniture.  Cheesy I love my yellow paint

The kitties appove  Wink

EDITED TO ADD:  I have to give credit to pieknits for the idea for the artwork, I was inspired by her post here:  https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=191291.0  Grin
