Two days before Christmas my son married his longtime girlfriend so my best present this year is a new daughter and a 10 year old granddaughter.  We spent Christmas Eve reviving a tradition that we had when our son was young.  I baked the gingerbread the day before and everyone helped put the house together and decorate it.  What a wonderful night we had.
The house is over a foot high and completely gingerbread, royal icing and candy. It came out much bigger than I intended and weighed about 10 lbs.  The day after Christmas the neighborhood kids all joined in to help demolish it.

front view, the roof is corn chex

back view, dots make the lights on the roof, starburst candy chiminey and skittles on the tree

my son and his daughter adding the roof tiles.

there was cereal and candy everywhere but we had so much fun making it.
2  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / old wood from demolition and building(img heavy but worth it) on: October 25, 2007 11:42:09 AM
Hi everyone,
Explanation: I am a recycler... what an understatement.... almost everything I make or do in my studio or garden involves reuse of something.  It has become a pleasant challenge to come up with imaginative ways to recycle, reclaim and reuse stuff.
I have collected a crap load of wood in every dimension imaginable, after a  complete remodel of our house and garage there was even more.  I started to clean the garage and have decided that I cannot do anything else until a good amount of this wood gets used up.

Most of the pieces have character to them like 100+ year old barn wood, including several barn doors, old wooden bowls, spoons and forks, lots of scraps from pallets and chunks of 4x4,2x4 and 1" scraps as well.
I really like to make useful items as opposed to purely decorative stuff and have managed to use about 60% of it on the following projects:

About 300 feet of picket fence made from pressure treated pallet pieces and reclaimed 4x4 fence posts. Cost:$14 for screws and saw blades. $85 for fence paint.

Harvest table made from barnwood planks, reclaimed fence posts and old scaffolding boards. Cost $9 for stain and sealer. $2 for screws. (the chairs were free from a local freecycle website 'SCORE!!!')

halloween and thanksgiving decorations from scrap, alot of the paint was from freecycle as well so virtually no cost involved in these babies.
halloween cute stuff:

and a large picture frame from reclaimed barnwood

I have made shelves for my pantry and laundry room, a work bench for my studio and one for the potting shed, several raised beds from the treated fence posts.
I still have quite a bit of wood left, any ideas for some different things I could use it for.  Thanks for suggestions and comments.

3  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / scrap wood bats on a stick on: October 25, 2007 10:50:20 AM
I am on a quest to use up a bunch of scrap wood and thought that I would make a few bats to put on my party tables for the halloween party.  Not much to them really, a few cuts with the saw, slapped some black paint on then sanded and stained, a dowel and a chunk of wood for the base and this is what I came up with.

I am now done with the making of Halloween decorations for this year.  Happy haunting everyone!
4  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / rustic turkey 'sculpture'? awesome way to use up scrap wood on: October 24, 2007 11:05:56 AM
So this huge pile of scrap wood that I have is getting smaller by the day, if I just had more time to play with my wood working tools*L*
I think that I will prolly use these for a center piece on the table for Thanksgiving this year.  I distressed them after painting and then sealed with danish oil.  Thanks for looking.

5  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / cool ways to use scrap wood/ pheasant and table on: October 18, 2007 03:11:10 PM
Ok, so I had a huge pile of wood to use up, and I have decided that nothing will be purchased to make new crafts until it is gone! Hence I give you my primative ring necked pheasant, I made 4 of them. They are sitting on the patio table that I made out of old barn wood and more scrap. I have plans for some turkeys and maybe some carved Santa Clauses soon.   Anyway I hope you like them, comments, questions even critisism welcome *LOL*

6  HOME SWEET HOME / Exterior Decorating / Yard Art / Gardening: Completed Projects / patio/garden table finished on: October 14, 2007 10:39:03 AM
here it is folks, the table is finished and I think it came out ok, I went for a matte finish because I have a rustic thing (it is in my genes*L*)
we had a BBQ this weekend and it was perfect, plenty enough room for food and drinks and people eating. everyone was very impressed that I built it myself..... hmmmmm there is a whole pile of wood just waiting for more projects, looks like it will be a productive winter for me.

this is the table before stain

and finished with some fall decorations

I have to say that the pics do not do it justice the grain really shows beautifully in the sun.Oh and yes I did make the wooden pheasant from some scaps laying around and a little paint and stain.
Anyway, hope you like it.
7  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / cutesy halloween decorations on: October 02, 2007 09:41:40 AM
Ok ok, so I know it is supposed to be scary but I needed some decorations for a friend who wanted 'cute stuff' so here is my attempt.  I have been on a mission of late to use up a huge stash of wood so that I can make a new studio area in the garage (my own personal "use up all this wood" challenge so to speak) so this definitely took away a few pieces of leftover wood scraps.

a small pumpkin made out of a 4 x 4 scrap, I will make more for me of this, would be good for the entire autumn season.

ghost candy bowl made from a wooden bowl and a 4 x 4 you can lay it down and have candy in it , when the candy is gone it still looks cute

8  HOME SWEET HOME / Exterior Decorating / Yard Art / Gardening: Completed Projects / garden/patio table on: September 27, 2007 07:55:38 AM
I had a huge stack of misc wood laying around the garage and needed to get some of it used up.  My first project was a 'harvest table' to use on the patio.  It is made from 150 year old boards a friend gave me and some left over fence materials (from when I made my picket fence).  The old boards had uneven edges and I really liked them so I tried to keep as many as I could. This table makes it easy to entertain on my patio, seats up to 12 people comfortably and my friends think it is great.  I got the chairs off of a local freecycle website for nothing so the entire set up cost me like $2.00 for the screws to put it together.  I still need to seal it or stain it.

The picket fence in the background was my spring project, it took about 4 months to make a 300 ft fence and paint it(glad that is finished!)

this is the table stained

and a pic of the table with a pheasant I made from more scrap.
thanks for all the lovely comments

Thanks for looking.
