1  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Quilt out of linen, some dyed with indigo on: November 13, 2013 08:54:12 PM
I have recently learned how to dye with natural indigo - it's a blast.  I started with linen and some of it ended up quite light and blotchy because I didn't know how to prep the fabric.  Also, cotton seems to take the dye better than linen so I've switched over to cotton.*
Anyhoo, I took my practice pieces and turned them into a quilt.  Every piece of fabric is linen and was thrifted.

*PS - just because I'm curious and obsessed:  have you dyed with indigo?  Do you find the same thing?  Tell me all about it!  I love it!
2  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Coupla books on: November 13, 2013 08:45:54 PM
I bound a coupla books.  One has a Coptic stitch binding and the other has a piano hinge binding.  For both I used random book and magazine and found paper pages.  It was really fun and I plan to make a bunch more.

Here are some pages out of an earlier book. I guess I didn't take any of the latest book pages.

Thanks for looking, I hope you liked them and I hope I posted in the right place!
3  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Completed Projects / Avocado on: August 09, 2013 10:21:46 AM
Hi all,

I dyed some fabric using avocado skins and pits and it turned out PINK!

It was pretty simple and no mordant necessary.

I simmered them in a pot, strained the liquid into a jar, left that in the sun with the fabric in it and then took it out after a bit.

The pink is pale but very pretty.

It was our first time trying and was really fun.

We were nervous at first because our dye vat looked blue - it's not supposed to - but that was just the part of the vat that was in contact with oxygen.

It worked really well. We used linen, woven cotton and cotton jersey and they all took the dye happily.

The fabric comes out of the vat looking green but turns blue after contact with oxygen.
5  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Piano Hinge Books on: May 03, 2013 09:57:19 AM
I just made these piano hinge books.  It was fun though there was a definite learning curve for me.  You don't use glue or stitching.

There are plenty of tutes online.
6  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Upcycled Baby Quilt on: March 18, 2013 10:07:58 AM

What was once a pile of thrifted linen clothes...

Is now a baby quilt!

Here are some action shots:

7  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Denim Power Up Quilt on: January 23, 2013 08:49:16 AM
I made yet another denim quilt.  This one is 44 X 44, which was a mistake.  I meant for it to be 40 X 40 and use it for a rug but I measured wrong.  So I gave it to my son, who said it was the perfect size for a super power, power up blanket, duh.  Smiley

I machine sewed small squares onto bigger squares which was oddly satisfying.  The bigger squares are machine pieced together.

The backing is a remnant from IKEA.

It's hand quilted together, the quilting pattern was improvised squares and rectangles.

8  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Baby Quilt on: August 12, 2012 03:26:50 PM
I finished this just in time for the shower.

I machine pieced squares cut from denim pants together and then hand quilted it to soft red flannel with different colored embroidery thread.
9  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Travel Journal on: June 20, 2012 07:02:36 AM

This is my first attempt at making a travel journal.

I messed up the binding, which I got from How To Make Books by Esther K. Smith (I love this book!)

It was really fun to make.
10  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Baby quilt made from Upcycled Jeans on: June 08, 2012 08:23:50 AM
I finished and gifted this yesterday.

It was fun to make but I made a pretty big rookie mistake.  I didn't wash the backing fabric first.  I thought it would take on a nice vintage-y feel but it shrank A LOT!  The denim side is pretty dang bumpy now but it's still functional.

Bumpy fabric

I really enjoy hand quilting more than I ever would have thought.
