21  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Gel cake dyes? on: April 25, 2006 05:27:17 PM
Since kool-aid doesn't come in a huge range of colors, I've started looking for other dyes.  I remember someone mentioning Wilton cake dyes, but the only ones I've ever found are concentrated gels.  Maybe that's all they make (Huh), but how would you go about dying yarn with a gel - if at all?

Thanks,
~K
22  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / My first plied yarn, plus a little bit of cotton on: April 18, 2006 04:06:33 PM
I think I'm going to leave the plying to those who do it better.  It practically drove me nuts...I think my system was just out of whack, but I still like single ply better.  This was yarn that I posted a while ago.

Plied with white and silver crochet thread.  The sparkle is hard to see.

I also spun some cotton for the first time.

The black bit is just there to hold it together.
23  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / The one thing I need to know about plying... on: March 20, 2006 08:02:55 AM
...And I can't find the answer anywhere!!

So, I have the two fibers that are going to be plied.  Do I spin them both the same way and then ply them in the opposite direction, OR spin them in opposite directions to begin with?  But then how do you ply them?

Woah...is that too confusing?  Tongue
Thanks,
~K
24  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Abandoned Asylum Photographs (Part 1)...Img. Heavy on: March 19, 2006 04:50:49 PM
On Saturday, for a photo assignment, I went out to the old Manteno State Hospital to shoot some rolls.  As always, I brought my digital along.  The place closed down in 1985 and a lot of it has already been demolished.  I only got to three of the building before running out of film, so I'm going back next weekend, although this time I'm bringing someone with.  It's a truly creepy place.  While at the Paint House, I could hear some child song playing over and over... Shocked

"Paint House"

there's a light on inside...

Cafeteria

Entrance to the tunnels

Misc.

All of the building are owned privately now, but this is just creepy

Love the reflection

Thanks for looking!  Part 2 will be up next week!

25  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Empire Records Swap?!!! on: March 12, 2006 07:59:47 PM
Empire Records is my all time favorite movie!  Anyone else's?  I searched, and I can't believe this hasn't been a swap yet!  There are so many things that could be made with this movie - all the great characters, quotes, and music!! (Rex Manning Day!)   I'm thinking it'd make a good summertime swap.

Would anyone be interested in this?

26  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / What sells better? Handspun yarn, or hand-dyed roving? on: March 12, 2006 02:18:17 PM
I think the title says it all.  I have a few pounds of natural wool that I've been thinking of dyeing, and don't know whether to post the roving, or spin it up first.

27  CLOTHING / Clothing for Curvaceous Craftsters: Discussion and Questions / Looking for a shrug pattern! on: March 10, 2006 05:43:35 PM
One of the things I wanted to do this year was actually find a dress that I could and would wear without shame.  I've been saving all my money and today I found it!!! oh-la-la!   http://www.torrid.com/store/product.asp?LS=0&RN=676&ITEM=585627

The thing is, I want to make a shrug/capelet/shawl/bolero that would cover my arms.  Not that I don't like them, but it's pretty damn cold out now.  Wink  Something easy would be great - I'm a handsewer by heart...and machines seem to hate me.  Does anyone have a good pattern recomendation?

Thanks!

28  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / How to figure out yardage? on: February 26, 2006 01:01:48 PM
I know that it's going to be a long time before I can actually afford one of those yard yardage counters, so is there a cheaper way of doing the same thing?
29  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Newbie crocheter question on: February 19, 2006 09:10:19 PM
Ok, so I've crocheted a scarf before (on the biggest hook I've ever seen).  I know how to chain and the basic stitch (single?).  I've been wanting to make an afghan for myself by making huge rectangles and sewing them together.  The question is: the yarn I want to use calls for an H8 hook.  I want to double strand it, so what size hook would I use?

Thanks!,

30  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / My first spinning adventure... on: January 26, 2006 07:32:43 AM

It's only about 6 feet, cause I wanted to see how it would turn out (after setting and all), but I have tons more of this color to spin.  Whatever is finally made with this will probably have to be felted.  It's fuzzing like crazy....or is there something I can do to stop that?

Thanks for looking!
