11  Re: YARN DYEING 101 - KOOL AID in Dyeing: Completed Projects by taped_on_wings on: September 06, 2006 09:25:15 PM
I've been using a hot plate in the garage to dye my roving -- the smell didn't get rave reviews from my family when I used to use the microwave. Tongue

My first go at using the hot plate

All spun up

Other dyed and spun yarns

So, finally...pictures!

Ocean Friends Swap -- ambraqi took much better pics than I did:

Spun yarns -- my firsts on a wheel:

One tube sock so far -- not too fond of the color and it's kind of uncomfortable (Lionbrand Magic Stripes).  I wasn't going to buy good sock yarn for my first pair.

13  First Wheel-Spun Yarns!!! in Spinning: Completed Projects by taped_on_wings on: September 03, 2006 04:37:49 PM
I got a Babe Production Double Treadle quite a while ago and am totally loving it and have been spinning like crazy.  Sorry about the poor quality of the photos.  I'm sick and don't feel like dragging myself outside.  In order:

Undyed so far.  It's from the roving that came with the wheel.  48 yds.  And I still have a bit left over.

Dyed using way too much Cherry Kool-aid.  50 yds.

Dyed using blue, green, and pink Kool-Aid.  This is from the Sheep Shed Studio -- the white/black blend.  34 yds.

Currently I'm experimenting with plant fibers, baby camel, and yak, so those will be up soon!

Thanks for looking

YAY!  It's September!  lol.  So, I've been spinning like crazy lately and here's one of the skeins from my adventures in learning how to use a wheel.  I dyed the roving with Kool-Aid.  Thick and thin, a bit of coils, about 55 yds.  Just ignore the black and white bits.

I'm thinking of making hand warmers, so I may be posting those later this month. Wink

15  Re: *Sock Virgin* KAL in Knitalongs by taped_on_wings on: August 28, 2006 03:18:43 PM
I've had a book on sock knitting on two circs for awhile, and finally cast on yesterday afternoon.  It's soooo easy!  Here's what I had by the end of the night:

Then this morning at 3:00 I was woken up by my cat, so I knit up the heel flap:

This is so addictive (and quick!)...why didn't I start sooner? Wink

Edit: As I was turning the heel I messed up so badly that I had to frog the sock.  At least I was able to save the leg, and now I'm making a pair of tube socks!

I received my package from ambraqi today!

A knitting tote with a silkscreened squid

Close up of the image

An adorable stuffie and some notecards

I'm definitely in awe of anything silk-screened, as I have no idea how it's done.  The stuffie is guarding my computer now.

Thank you!  I love it all!   Wink

Haha...I almost forgot about this month, until I was at Walmart picking up some stuff for a swap and saw this pendant.  On the package it's described as 'Peach Milk Glass'.  I really wanted brown cord, but then saw the green... Wink

Again with the crappy camera phone photo

Excuse the camera phone pics, but here's my sock monkey (made from monkey socks nonetheless).  He was done for the 'colour craftalong'.

Mr. Unibrow:

Hand sewn and a bit crooked.  I suck at embroidery, so I'm very happy with his nose and mouth.  He's just happy to be representing the mono-browed.  Grin

Whoo!  I've been dying to make a sock monkey forever.  I was doing the laundry and found that one of my favorite (yellow) pairs of socks had a large hole in one of them, so...

It's Mr. Unibrow!!!  A sock monkey made from monkey socks!

Pink unibrow goodness

The end of his tail

The toes of the socks were monkey faces.   He's all hand-sewn and a bit wonky in places, but now I'm addicted!

Ok...more promo items are done, and the custom wallets are put together in my computer.

Promo pendants:

A local fabric store is going out of business and all the yarn is half off -- maybe more later!!!  So I went and got so much Fun Fur.  In the next three weeks I have to make as many monster hats that I can for the craft fair (or my Etsy shop in case those plans fall through):

Ugh.  My digi cam's at the Canon Hospital for broken cameras, so I had to take these with my camera phone.  Tongue

I think I'm going to keep my Top Three in my sig to remind me! Tongue
