21  NEEDLEWORK / Sublime Stitching Embroidery / two love birds on: February 26, 2009 09:25:26 AM
Since my boyfriend's moved away to go to school I've found myself incredibly bored and on the edge of another bout of depression (not *just* because of his move, but it didn't help). So to keep myself company and to keep my sad self from picking fights I picked up embroidery.

Here's my first project fresh off the hoop. The two lovebirds are a pattern from sublime stitching and I freehanded the shading in the wings, the branch, and the hearts

The only thing I'm displeased about it that I changed my mind about a placement of hearts and when I pulled the thread out the dye was left behind Sad

I added our initials...Woodrow and Kayleigh

Better detailing of my stitches

I'm not sure what to do with it now...maybe frame it?

Thanks for looking and comments and critique are always welcome <3

I really want to replicate this! I'm horrible at keeping track of money. I think seeing it visually in receipt form will be incredibly helpful!

You have a great sense of style and you really understand the lolita aesthetics. I love them all Smiley

I like!

May I ask, what recipe did you use for the icing on the first batch. Looks almost like a poured fondant.  Been looking for a good recipe for such. Would you mind sharing?
Of course! It's actually much more simple than that Smiley

I took a simple vanilla frosting from the grocery store and used dye to color it. When I got the color I wanted I put it into a bowl and microwaved it for about 5-10 seconds so that it was about the consitancy of glue....not too think and not overly runny. I dipped the cooled off cupcake into the frosting and slowly brought it out. Then while it's still in the air over the bowl, I just slowly turned the cupcake in a clockwise motion so that the excess would drip off. Then you just let it cool Cheesy If the frosting hardens it's perfectly fine to reheat it and continue Smiley It's my favorite trick

Calculus and Cupcakes... a match made in heaven.

I used to randomly bring food into my calc class in high school... pi shaped cookies, and for V-Day a pink cake with a cosine graph and it's derivative that said, "Can I be your derivative so I can lay tangent to your curves?"
Aww that so cute!! Cheesy I would love to try some pi shaped cookies XD
27  COOKING / Dessert / Re: WTF? Why does my icing keep melting? on: November 18, 2008 08:46:02 AM
I have a problem with melting cupcakes when I put them in a tupperware container overnight. Is that what's happening or is it only while you're making them that they're melting...

29  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Giant Cupcake! on: November 05, 2008 07:49:09 AM
I decided to be a giant cupcake for halloween Cheesy

I took about 3 yards of tulle and added elastic on both sides of it so that it would hold onto the cardboard and my body.

I used cardboard and tin foil to create the tin. To fasten it to my body, I took 4 pieces of ribbon and attached it to the cardboard so that it would tie over my shoulders.

Finally I stuffed it with fiberfill (used mostly for pillows and stuffed toys) to make it nice and fluffy.

The red beret is my cherry on top :3

My costume was a hit at work, everyone loved it!! My new nickname is cupcake Cheesy

Thanks for looking and please vote for me!

Decorator icing.  Mix in a stand mixer (or, very carefully and in a deep bowl, a hand mixer) a third of a cup of vegetable shortening (use Crisco) and a pound of confectioner's sugar.  Add a teaspoon of vanilla or almond flavoring.  Color preferably with gel or paste colors (not food coloring).  You can get this at craft stores.

Thin down with a couple of tablespoons of water to flat-ice the cake, and ice in two layers (a thin crumb coat and a thicker, smoother outside coat).  If you're going to play around with flowers, use it as-is.  You'll also need to thin it down for writing.
Cheesy thank you so much! I'm definitely going to practice with this <3
