welcome to the crochet club! great job on ur first work of art, and i dont think u'll ever think its a piece of poo, there's definately something special about your first completed crochet project. i still have mine, after nearly twelve years (one giant granny square blanket that is the most incredibly lopsided and loose stitched thing i've ever seen).
i love it to pieces.
good luck with all your future crochet! cant wait to see what you create next!  Cheesy

6  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Re: Why can't I crochet a square? on: August 24, 2008 02:33:09 AM
i would try counting your stitches as a starter, i keep track by counting the chain loops on top of the row i'm working on (when you look at the work from  over top of it it should look like a row of interlocking loops
you were pretty even on the right side, but i can see that you missed a stitch in what looks like the seventh or eight row, and on the left you're definately on a steady increase.
if your turning the work at the right stitch perhaps you're putting too many stitches in one (an increase) or crocheting around the post instead of in the stitch.
if the stitches look like this I-I-I-I the "I's" being your HDC's and the Dashes being the spaces inbetween the stitches, you want to be placing your stitches in the next row up in the Dash spots and not around the "I's"
it helps me to count the stitches in the previous row and then place a stitch marker or tie a piece of yarn ( i sometimes use twisty-ties) around the stitch that i want to turn on.
hope that was helpful, and keep at it! practice makes perfect!
unless you are me in which case frogging over and over again makes passable
