25  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / cleaning a very dirty house - friends just moved into on: July 17, 2010 09:14:02 PM
OK so i have friends who are engaged and my friend of 13 years is 7 1/2 months pregnant and they have finally got a place, the owners 'cleaned' the house before they moved in.... i say cleaned very lightly, and were meant to either paint the house or supply the paint so it can be painted, an they have called the realestate 3 times asking when the paint will be supplied, but the house is just filthy and being 7 1/2 months pregnant my friend cannot really do any of the cleaning so I'm willing to do it for her

here are the main problems:
  • whole house is tiled - grout is black instead of grout colour especially in laundry, toilet and bathroom
  • bathroom counter if filthy and rough, like the enamel was stripped off
  • all the window and door frames and tracks are filthy with peeling paint
  • there are no curtains just vertical blinds & they are filthy and some broken
  • the kitchen counter has sections burnt out and gouged out
  • the walls and doors and architraves are filthy

whats the best way to clean the grout on the floors? i know it will be a big job, i have access to a steam cleaner for like between tiles as well as a steam mop and other everyday cleaning items

the counter in the bathroom, how would i go about cleaning it and possibly re sealing it? or putting a coating over it?

the door frames n windows will need to be cleaned n the peeling stuff removed what is the best way to do this?

the curtains i plan on making for them as a present, but i was wondering the best way to hang curtains in a rented property? should i do the hook and eye method with the curtains on the covered wire? or put in curtain polls? i don't think i want to spend the money on polls if they only have a 6 month lease an i don't want to leave anything for the owner who is obviously a jack** when it comes to looking after his property's, and Ive seen my mother clean verticals in the bathtub but i know its a big job, but they need curtains for prettiness and privacy and warmth

is there anything that can be done to cover or fix the kitchen counters? they seem to be melamine, like just for hygiene reasons

and the walls and doors and architraves and ceilings all need a good scrub with sugar soap before they can even think of re painting

now the problem is my friend only has well 10 weeks to go and she is still working for 4 weeks so i only have weekends and then when shes on maternity leave to help out

and i know 10 weeks isn't a long time but i want to help them get this house cleaned PROPERLY AND STERILISED before the baby arrives so the have nothing to worry about because it really is in need of some love and care. so any help or suggestions would be appreciated Smiley
I'm doing this as a big favour and help to my friend and her fiancee because she really cannot do much and already tore a muscle from above the sac trying to do too much. and they still have allot to unpack and the baby's room is just filled with stuff to unpack ATM

the yards will apparently be done up by the owner hes meant to be paying someone but they still need some care and cleaning and the cleaning of the walls and painting i think i will try an organise a bunch of us to come and scrub walls and paint when they get it and clean up the yards.

so yes any advice, help and ideas.. or even just some support (its a big undertaking 3 bedroom house thankfully only one bathroom and toilet and one loungeroom) would be lovely

love boo
