376  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / DIY Bridesmaid's dress...hawaiian style! on: October 14, 2007 08:01:31 PM
Newbie here! And, well, also a newbie to sewing. I knit but have never sewed before. I'm eager to learn and, if absolutely necessary, my Grams is willing to lend a hand Smiley

BG Info: My good friend has asked me to be a bridesmaid at her wedding in June. Awesome girl that she is, everyone can wear whatever they want, but it has to be Hawaiian in theme and blue and white in color.

I cannot find a single thing in the stores (no surprise) that I like but I have seen tons of awesome fabric at the local stores that would work.

Does anyone know of a site that offers free dress patterns? I'm looking for something flow-y and with a halter-top style. I'm absolutely crazy about dresses from the 50s but I'm not sure if I could translate that well for a June wedding...I live in NJ so the summers CAN get hot, fickle as the weather is up here...

If there are no free dress patterns, is it really difficult to create your own pattern by just looking at a dress style and then going from there with my own measurements? Like I said, I've never sewed before, let alone create my own pattern so I'm really green on this but I'm very eager to try it!

Help please! Smiley
