1  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Crafters for Critters & Renegade Craft Fair! Looking for submissions on: July 21, 2006 08:14:52 PM

Crafters for Critters (http://www.craftersforcritters.com) will have a table at the Renegade Craft Fair (http://www.renegadecraft.com) in Chicago/September, and we are looking for goods to sell at our table.

In case you aren't familiar, Crafters for Critters is a fundraising website that sells handmade donations and then donates all the proceeds to animal rescue orgs.

Here is the info on how to participate:

We are just looking for submissions for now, not actual goods just yet: submissions will be reviewed by a jury of 5 diverse people. Unfortunately the table space is only so big. Submission deadline is July 31; all the info is in that link above! It's a lot of info so please read through it carefully.

But there are other opportunities to be invoved: we are also looking for "promo pal" sponsors, to help raise funds for travel costs. For $25, we will include your promos/business cards/small samples in our promo packs and give them to visitors!

I guess that's it! E-mail me if there are any questions!

2  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Crafters For Critters, Round 3! on: December 30, 2004 07:48:47 AM
Looking for interested crafters/indie designers/etc for Round 3 of Crafters For Critters!

In a nutshell, what it's all about is--> crafters donate handmade goods & then they are posted for sale on the website. When they sell, 100% of the profits go to an animal rescue organization.
The organization for Round 3 is Greyhound Protection League, a national greyhound rescue group.
Round 1 was Sasha Farm, an animal sanctuary.
Round 2 was/is Michigan Greyhound Connection, a local greyhound rescue group.

Each one is getting bigger & bigger!
Benefits of participating are:
- Exposure for your crafts/indie business. We can pool our resources and possibly purchase ads in magazines we wouldn't be able to afford alone. I'll be sending press releases out this time around, too.
- Donaters get special coupons & discounts & get to shop first for items in the C.F.C. shop.
- A good feeling knowing something you made will help an animal in need.

I'm going to be sending out an e-mail very very soon with all the details, so right now if you're interested I just need you to please join this mailing list! (click the link)

Right after the new year I'll be sending/posting important info on this, so please join the mailing list asap if you want to participate! The shop will be opening in April; donations will have to be in by the end of February. I'll be sending all the details out soon soon soon to the mailing list.

Here's the site address if you want to check it out:

Please e-mail me with questions!

4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / reconstructed jeans scene on: June 17, 2004 01:07:04 PM
recently i hacked up 4 pairs of thrift store jeans, and combined them into one pair...i live in jeans but cannot stand store-bought jeans because they never fit right, and are just generally not that cool.

anyway, i highly recommend this project!! it was a little difficult, but totally worth it. there's so many sad, unwanted jeans out there just dying to be a part of your new favorite pair.

the best part is that you're "making" pants, but you don't have to deal with the hassle of putting the fly and pockets and waistband together, because they're already made.

someday (when i have more time-- ha) i want to put together a "jeans zine" with instructions, or at least tips, on how to make your own reconstructed jeans. the best tip i have is to use a pair of jeans you have that you like the fit of as a guide.

oh, and that's my seatbelt-belt, made from an old car (the heavy, metal kind) seatbelt buckle (didn't make it, but sure do love it!).

7  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re:pearls of wisdom: what do you know now... on: March 24, 2004 07:49:23 PM
one tip that comes to mind is, if you are making things to order don't be afraid to have a 2, 3 or even 4 week turnaround. i know i don't mind waiting for something that is being made just for me. you don't want to totally stress yourself out trying to get everything made in a week AND keep up on everything else-- answering e-mail, making new products, bookkeeping, updates, etc.

also, it might help to start out small? so you don't overwhelm yourself right off the bat, and you can get a feel for what works and what doesn't.

9  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / handmade fundraiser shop is open!! on: March 17, 2004 12:08:58 AM
many craftsters donated handmade items to the following handmade-fundraiser that i am hosting:

buy handmade, get cute stuff, help animals!

100% of profits go to Sasha Farm, an animal sanctuary in Manchester, MI.

thanks to all the donaters! i received about 60 great items!

feel free to spread the word.
10  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re:how does one get press? on: February 24, 2004 05:55:19 PM
a press kit sounds like a good idea. i worked at my college newspaper and used to get them all of the time. include photos, info, samples even...important: make it eye-catching, otherwise it might end up in the garbage, unread.
try sending them to your local paper or free weekly or even your college or a nearby college paper. some papers like to do the "local gal's spiffy business" articles.
someone recommended Bust magazine, also try Venus(zine.com), they have a links page too and are DIY friendly. both mags have reasonable advertising rates, too, if you wanted to try that. Rockpile(.net) seems interested in supporting DIY businesses, as does nervygirlzine(.com).
maybe just try sending stuff out, press packages or whatever, to a bunch of places. the most you'll lose is a little bit of money & you're bound to pique someone's interest eventually.
good luck!
