What a terrific quilt! The blocks are great and I love your setting.

Wow!! Beautiful work! I'm impressed with everything: colors, style and pattern, not to mention your generosity!

1144  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Re: Thread (another beginners question..) on: August 03, 2007 04:55:24 AM
I also prefer all cotton thread. You can pretty much use whatever thread you'd like, but a couple of things to keep in mind:

1. use the same weight thread in the bobbin and top -- doesn't have to be the same color/brand/etc. The weight is something like "50/3"

2. don't use "hand quilting" thread in your machine, but you can use 'regular' machine thread to do hand quilting if you want

Trial and (hopefully not too much) error will be how you figure out what you like best.

Have fun!

Absolutely beautiful! I love, love, *love* the batiks with the white. WOW!

Your idea for yellow border and backing is a good one, and I think your packaging idea is fabulous, too!

That is super cute! I absolutely love the light blue border with those great repro fabrics.

I have three of those charm packs and you've given me the inspiration to finally *do* something with them!!

1147  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Re: large applique question on: July 31, 2007 07:57:52 PM
No practical applique tips -- never done it myself -- just wanted to say I think using flannel for Elmo would be perfect! What a great texture for the little (big!) guy.

*Love* the retro fabric! I really like how you used the color flow in your rectangles. Thanks for the inspiration!

You've made a really cool quilt, and I imagine you have some left over, too? Looks like you mostly used the "stripe" of the original fabric. If so, I can't wait to see what you do with the center!

Oh, and thanks for the "free pattern on Amy Butler website" info!! I'm heading off to check it out now!

1149  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Re: Quilt top Wanna swap for it!! Fence rail pattern on: July 28, 2007 07:03:52 AM
No swap offer, but why not just remove the last border? Maybe it would appeal to you more that way and you'd want to finish it.

You do nice work, but I must agree with you about that last border....it's a little too much for that quilt.

Good Luck!

1150  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Re: pre-washing fabric on: July 25, 2007 10:13:52 PM
I pre-wash some fabric, but not all. If there's any pre-washed fabric in the quilt, all that quilt's fabric will be pre-washed.

One way to minimize the strings: cut the corners on your fabric. Not a lot, but a one-inch triangle off each corner really does reduce the number of strings when pre-washing. No, I don't know why, but it does work for yardage. The FQs I don't bother trimming.
