1  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Re: Help Me with Class Ideas!!! Please!!! on: December 03, 2007 07:29:09 PM
Ok. I've divided the classes up into common items that are thrown out without a thought.  I'm trying to use things that they will think are 'cool' in hopes that it gets them thinking more about the environment.  and it's a mixed class so I don't know that the boys will be up for crochetting, as awesome as that would be.

Class 1: Overview on waste and our environment. Compare the resources used for 'recycling' versus us doing our own 'reusing' when we can.

Subsequent classes, and here is where I need help coming up with easy to learn in one day crafts for these items

1.Cardboard boxes (cereal?)- Flat File folders, standing folder box,  Notebook cover wth glued or spiral binding.
2 Glass Jars/Bottles-Cut into Bowls, glasses, vases, candle holders?
3.   Old Jeans/ Tshirts -  Rugs, Bags, Coasters, Pocket on the fridge?
4.   Dryer Lint-  Fire Starters.  Lint Clay?
5.   Tin Cans-
6.   Wine Corks- coark board, trivet, stamps?
7.   Coke Cans-

If you can think of something cool  for any of these...

Ok, no one?  No suggestions on crafts from recycled stuff that would be appropriate for getting kids thinking differently about what they pitch in the trash can?

I've jsut taken on a 'Resourceful Earth Action" class for 15 homechool children, 5th grade and up.  I have 7 classes to teach them creative resourcefulness and each class will need a craft or project.  I really want to get these kids thinking and being creative.
I want each project to be an application of the lesson, but I haven't chosen lessons yet.  Give me some class ideas!!  What would you want kids learning about being resourceful?

You can get those re-inflated! As long as there aren't any holes in them, that is. Just take them somewhere where they have the helium to blow balloons up and recycle them through more holidays, birthday parties, etc.  Smiley

I've reinflated my kids thomas the train balloon 3 times at Kroger.  $.50 well spent to see them enjoy it again.

Make a bag?  There's a really nice one here https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=2704.0
that would lend itself nicely to the task at hand, (HUH? Do I really talk like that?Huh I didn' think I did, but?Huh? LOL!)

Anyhow, a nice bag made from Dove wrappers would be very cool!

I like that!! Even a smaller handbag or change purse..  Ummm. Ive gotta go call my husband.  I need to add some Dove to the grocery list...

You can also slice them on the diagonal and use them to store magazines.

We do this. Cut them diagonally and then the kids paste paper all over the outside to decorate them. Then we have books and crafts organized in them on shelves in the kids room.  They're great, and when one gets too beat up we just toss it and make a new one!
