Thank you too, raynbow. That helps as well...I won't worry so much about ratios at first. I'm more of the fly by the seat of my pants type person anyway!
3  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: I've just bought a spinning wheel on: September 28, 2007 04:07:05 PM
Yay Weddy!
I just bought my first wheel from ebay too(from seller ssilk1)! And I got it today, hooray!

I don't think you're crazy and neither will anyone else here. My co-workers on the other hand tease me about being "strung out" on yarn and that I better watch out or hemp will be next (I didn't tell them about the hemp yarn I'm tempted to buy).

Anyway mine is a Baynes, fairly small, because I live in a very tiny condo. I got it unfinished, so am putting a varnish on it tonight (its on my balcony, drying). I hope I can try spinning on it this weekend.

6  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Flyer ratio on: September 26, 2007 10:53:01 AM
I'm new to spinning and was wondering about the flyer ratio. From what I can find the higher the number, the thicker the yarn spun. Is that correct? Also does it have anything do do with the type of fiber you are spinning?

Edit: Ok I think I found a better article on ratios. The lower the number the coarser the fiber used as well as the slower the wheel. So a finer fiber, like merino or angora, needs a faster ratio for a higher twist.
7  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: I'm spinning! Alpaca on a drop spindle on: September 26, 2007 10:49:57 AM
that makes me wish I wasn't allergic to alpaca. I have this wonderful alpaca coat my MIL bought for me in peru and I can't wear it! I started breaking out in a red bumpy rash and everything!
Sad I plan to get it dry cleaned and see if that helps.
What's odd is I can apparently spin sheep fiber without a problem!

Wow thats odd, I always heard that people who can't wear wool, can wear alpaca. Maybe it works both ways. Thats too bad, Eliea:(
