4  judy, judy, judy, judy in Needlework: Completed Projects by beelisty on: June 20, 2009 02:13:44 PM

My girlfriend turned 30 yesterday, and for her birthday, I x-stitched portraits of her four favorite Judys.

Judith Butler, Judy Garland, Judith Jack Halberstam, and Judy Grahn.

The portraits are 2x2 inches each, and I got the frame at Ikea and the mat was custom cut for me by Nicademus Art & Framing in St. Paul, MN.

She's ecstatic-- loves it more than anything else I've ever stitched for her.

6  Re: LGBT & Friends swap gallery in The Swap Gallery by beelisty on: April 14, 2009 08:45:19 AM
yay!  i received my package from crazyred and it's AWESOME!!!

here you can see everything she sent me-- the outlet covers, the Rachel Maddow die, the adorable sewing kit tin, and the etched glass canister (full of delicious skittles!!)

it's really hard to see the etched glass (it looks great but does not photograph well)-- one side says EAT ME and the other side says QUEER CANDY.  this totally gives me inspiration to try glass etching myself-- i've been meaning to give it a shot but haven't.

here's another shot of the inside of the sewing kit tin--

there's a magnet that holds the straight pins, then the felt clasp w/ rainbow button closer holds a ton of needles!  there are also folding scissors and a rainbow of embroidery floss-- I LOVE IT!

I can't choose a favorite item-- i love them all!

7  Spoonbridge & Cherry -- Walker Art Museum, MPLS, MN in Needlework: Completed Projects by beelisty on: March 29, 2009 11:36:46 AM
Last year, I got behind and missed the deadline to submit something to the Minnesota State Fair.  this year, i decided to start early, and can't believe how quickly I managed to finish.

In May 08, I took a photo of the Spoonbridge & Cherry Sculpture at the Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Museum here in MPLS.  (Learn more about the actual sculpture here: http://collections.walkerart.org/item/object/713)

Of course, the original photo is saved on my other computer!  But here's the finished piece.

i started it about a month or so ago (oh goodness-- not sure) .  specs-- 3x5 inches, completely stitched on 22.  Palette of 70 colors.  Over 7000 stitches.

you can see a short slideshow of process shots here: http://s283.photobucket.com/albums/kk320/beelisty/?action=view&current=ba12c593.pbw

8  a few little x-stitches in Needlework: Completed Projects by beelisty on: March 04, 2009 07:09:32 AM
so i've been busy working on my intense project, so this weekend i gave myself a break from it to make some fun stuff.  well, the big project is fun too, but i guess i really just needed a break to make easy stuff. Smiley

the frames are the cheap 4x6 ram frames from ikea... i paint them because the bare wood looks kind of sad and cheap to me.

9  if i can bake a cake... in Needlework: Completed Projects by beelisty on: February 17, 2009 12:42:24 PM

I stitched this for myself over a week or so.  2 shades of pink and black on 22 hardanger.  finished piece is 5x7 inches.

i identify as a post-modern/radical feminist and i'm a [lesbian] avenger (we don't call ourselves lesbian because there are non-lesbian identified queers and trans folk in our ranks).  i'm going to frame this and hang it in my apartment... right now it's just taped to the wall!!

10  Re: Cross-stitchers: favorite way to finish small items? in Needlework: Discussion and Questions by beelisty on: February 17, 2009 12:36:16 PM
i love the photo envelope magnets-- i've been using a lot of those lately. i get the 2x3 size and slip a tiny piece in:

i trim the canvas w/ pinking shears.

i also like to pick up weird tiny frames at various thrift stores around town (minneapolis).
