14  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Fiber Friday - Jan. 13, 2012 on: January 13, 2012 01:31:01 PM
Happy Fiber Friday!

I have a few skeins for oogling this week.  I spun them up at the beginning of January but missed last weeks F.F.

Back skein: 201yards (SW Merino)
Front skein: 76 yards  (not sure fiber content)
Both fibers are from swaps here on Craftster and are chain plied

4.5 ozs
2 skeins = 326 yards (1 @181 yds, 1 @ 145 yds)
Hand dyed with "Wilton's Icing Dyes"

The second skein is for a group on Ravlery called 12lbs in 2012.  I'm hoping to make that challenge this year. It works out to be about 4oz a week, which seems fairly reasonable.
15  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Decorate my Home Swap? on: December 04, 2011 09:21:01 PM
Would anyone be interested in a swap to help out other crafters decorate their homes?  It could possibly be a 5 point swap starting in the new year.  The swap would be open to any styles and any room of your house.

I searched through the boards (briefly) and didn't see anything similar.  Well, besides this one:  https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=249386.0 but it doesn't look like it went any where.

I'm currently trying to decorate my home in a french country/shabby chic style and so far I've bought a few yards of different fabrics for pillows (easiest way to make a change, I think), but it would be nice to get some fresh ideas on the subject.
16  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Couch/Sofa Slipcover on: November 30, 2011 05:03:11 PM
My couch and chair have become a little worn out and I'm wanting to sew a slipcover for them, but I have never completed such a complicated sewing project.  Does anyone have any tips? and also, do you know approximately how much fabric I will need for a 3 cushion couch?

Fiber swap!

I'm not sure if I've missed one recently or it just hasn't happened, but I wanted to see if there is any interest in swapping some fiber for spinning (or felting)?

I was thinking maybe sign ups could be beginning of October?  Or earlier if there is enough interest.

I know in the past there has been different types of fiber swaps, such as colors from pictures, or you could send wool or exotic fibers.  Any other ideas would be great!

In my area we don't get a lot of fiber festivals, and there are hardly any knitting/fiber shops.  And plus, who doesn't like getting presents in the mail?! I know I get sick of just bills and junk mail! lol
18  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Fiber Friday - July 23, 2010 on: July 23, 2010 02:03:17 PM
Wow! It's already 2pm here, and no fiber friday...  Cry   but never fear! I'm here!

100% Merino
236 yards
Dyed naturally with Logwood chips
Singles spun on my drop spindle and then plied on my wheel

(not sure of fiber, got it from a grab bag on Etsy)
118 yards (the most I've ever spun on a drop spindle! woot!)

I hope people come out from behind their wheels and post some yarns!  Wink
19  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Fiber Friday - July 9, 2010 on: July 09, 2010 10:07:02 AM
woot! it's friday! (even though at my work it's only my tuesday  Tongue )

I'm happy to start off this week with a few yarns all spun on my drop spindle.  At my work it's really slow for 2-3 of my shifts so I spend almost 6 hours drop spindling.  Anyways, enough blabbing.. on to the pictures!

"Anywhere but Here"
68 yards (0.5 oz)
(BFL? It was in sampler package from etsy)

"On the other side"
56 yards (0.5 oz)
(BFL? (same as above))

In progress, but same fiber sample package.  I'm excited for this one to be finished because it's the thinnest I have spun on my drop spindle.

I can't wait to see other fiber Friday entries!!
20  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Wheel or Spindle? Which one do you use? on: May 11, 2010 12:45:56 PM
I'm curious to know how many people use a wheel or a spindle?

I have been spinning for approx. 2 years on a wheel and just recently fell in love with spinning on a drop spindle.  I never knew that you could get so much yardage on such a tiny device.  I also found it has helped with creating a smaller yarn.  I have 2 country wheels and I find getting thin/fine yarn difficult.

Also, there is a new book out called "Respect the Spindle" which talks about using a spindle productively instead of just using it as a stepping stone to the wheel.  Has anyone read it?
